Collision in Gulf of Corinth
General cargo ship NS TERA suffered mechanical failure and went out of control while maneuvering in Antikyra, Greece, Gulf of Corinth, in the afternoon Jan 3. The ship s bow struck stern of berthed bulk carrier DELPHI RANGER, both ships reportedly sustained damages, extent unknown. Both ships were to be inspected.

Cargo ship engulfed in flames, Istanbul VIDEO
Fire erupted on board of cargo ship anchored at Pendik, Istanbul area, Marmara sea, early in the morning Jan 4. Fire according to available video and photos, is a major one, with superstructure engulfed in flames. 15 crew were evacuated. As of 0600 UTC fire understood to be still on, firefighting still continuing.

OSG Agrees 10-Year Bareboat Charter for US Tanker
Florida-based tanker shipping company Overseas Shipholding Group has entered into a bareboat charter deal with the owner of the 1999-built product tanker Oregon Voyager.
The company plans to rename the U.S. flagged tanker the Overseas Key West and intends to use the vessel in the U.S. coastwise trade under the Jones Act.

On January 2, Jinzhou Marine signed a memorandum of agreement with Poseidon Global Shipping for the disposal of the 50,209 dwt bulker.

1st Contract for Port of Corpus Christi Dredging Project Awarded
The plan to allow the Port of Corpus Christi, a major U.S. crude oil export port, to accommodate larger vessels is a step closer to realization.
Namely, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded a USD 92 million construction contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, to deepen and widen the Corpus Christi Ship Channel from the Gulf of Mexico to Harbor Island, as part of the Channel Improvement Project (CIP).

World s Largest Shipbuilder Ups the Ante for 2019
South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries Group has increased its appetite for 2019 setting its orderbook target at USD 15.9 billion, up by 20.7 percent year-on-year, Yonhap reported.
Based on the report, Hyundai Heavy Industries has set sights on attaining USD 8 billion in shipbuilding segment, whereas Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard have vowed to secure USD 4.3 billion and USD 3.5 billion worth of orders each.

Port operator COSCO Shipping Ports has acquired a 4.34 percent stake in China s Beibu Gulf Port for CNY 470 million (USD 68.5 million).
As informed, COSCO Shipping Ports has subscribed for 70,943,455 shares of Beibu Gulf Port through China Shipping Terminal Development, a subsidiary of the company.

China Overtook the US as World s Largest Crude Oil Importer in 2017
China surpassed the United States in annual gross crude oil imports in 2017, importing 8.4 million barrels per day (b/d) compared with 7.9 million b/d for the US, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
In 2013, China had become the world s largest net importer of total petroleum and other liquid fuels.

Vale, Pan Ocean Agree on USD 13 Bn Cut on COA Deal
Brazilian miner giant Vale has requested for its long term voyage deals with Singapore-listed shipowner Pan Ocean to be revised down, trimming USD 13 billion from USD 58 billion sales amount due to bunker fuel oil price.
Pan Ocean said that the contracts in question date back to September 2009 and involve transportation of 238.4 million tons of iron ore from Brazil to China for a duration of 19 years.

Ocean Cleanup s System to Return to Port after End Section Fracture
An 18-meter end section of the Ocean Cleanup s System 001, commonly referred to as Wilson, has broken off and the entire system intended for collecting of plastic will now be returned to port for repair and upgrade.
Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of the Dutch environmental organization said that the structural malfunctioning of the cleanup system was discovered on December 29 during a regular inspection.

Wellard Keeps an Eye on Turkey s Live Cattle Trade Halt
Australia s largest live cattle exporter Wellard is keeping a watchful eye on preliminary reports that Turkey has imposed a halt on import of live feeder cattle from all countries.
The company said that it is currently not clear how long the halt may last, adding that the move appears to be in response to an accumulation of stocks in Turkey and aligns with seasonal conditions.

Baltic ports raise cargo turnover 5.6% in 11 months
In the first 11 months of 2018, all Baltic ports together received and shipped 144.78 million tons of cargo, which was 5.6 percent or 7.665 million tons more than in the respective period last year, according to the data released by the Lithuanian Statistical Bureau.

Port Macquarie exporters would benefit from Port of Newcastle container terminal, report finds
A new container terminal at the Port of Newcastle would cut transport costs for exporters in the Hastings, according to a report.
The report by economic consultancy AlphaBeta, titled Global Gateway for NSW: the economic impact of a container terminal at the Port of Newcastle, shows a modern container terminal would cut land transport costs for northern NSW businesses by $2.8 billion by 2050.

Logistics specialist Descartes sees a bright 2019 for most major US ports, although not all will escape the pressures of rising volumes on infrastructure constraints.

Kalmar RTGs and process automation technology to help boost capacity at Norfolk Southern intermodal terminals in USA
Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a deal to supply Norfolk Southern with four Kalmar SmartPower rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) equipped with a suite of process automation solutions. The order was booked in Cargotec s 2018 Q4 order intake with delivery scheduled to be completed by the end of Q4 2019.
