All Clear at Port of Durban in Storm Aftermath
All navigable areas of the Port of Durban have now been declared safe for navigation, Transnet National Ports Authority said in its latest update following the mega-storm that ravaged the country on October 10.

The announcement was made following the completion of Transnet National Ports Authority's (TNPA) sounding surveys that found no obstacles in the navigation channels that might pose a danger to vessel traffic.

The surveys employed TNPA Dredging Services division, divers and drones, TNPA said.

''TNPA's focus still remains on continuing with the implementation of the recovery operations and supporting terminal operators to restore normality,'' the port authority added.

The Port of Durban was forced to shut down operations to marine traffic as several vessels got grounded, including one containership that drifted into the mouth of the port, blocking its entrance.

Yachts and boats in the small craft harbour and at the Point Yacht Club (PYC) also broke free from their moorings.

Separately, South African terminal operator Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) declared Force Majeure at its terminal facilities in Richards Bay following the strong storm.

TNT said that the decision was made due to the damage caused by extreme weather conditions which have impacted terminal operations.

The Richards Bay terminal, handling bulk and break bulk cargo, is situated in KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal South African province, which has been declared a disaster area by Premier Willies Mchunu after the storm that devasted parts of the province.

Hackers Access BW Group’s IT Systems. Countermeasures Undertaken
Hackers recently managed to gain access to computer systems of BW Group, the company confirmed to World Maritime News.

As disclosed, the cyber attack occurred in July 2017.

''We had an unauthorized access some time back in July and actions have been taken to rectify the matter,'' a spokesperson from BW Group said.

''Internal and external communications to customers and stakeholders were not impacted and it was business as usual with some inconveniences as we worked around planned system downtimes as our IT department, with the assistance of external consultants, reinforced our cybersecurity infrastructure,'' the spokesperson explained.

The incident followed a large-scale cyber attack on Danish A.P. Moller- Maersk on June 27, which shut down IT systems across multiple sites and business units owned by the company. The attack has cost the company up to USD 300 million.

Julian Clark, Global Head of Shipping at Hill Dickinson, a commercial international law firm headquartered in Liverpool, UK, explained that ''if a company as sophisticated as Maersk could be affected in such a dramatic way, requiring them to take two weeks to get all their systems back online, anyone and everyone is exposed.''

Mr. Clark also said in an interview with World Maritime News that although cost is an important factor for shipping companies, the time has come where there needs to be a significant investment in cybersecurity measures.

Capesize bulk carrier collided with pier, Black sea
Bulk carrier CONQUISTADOR loaded with coal from USA allided with a pier in Yuzhniy Port, Ukraine, Black sea, while shifting berth, with pilot on board. Pier was damaged, bulk carrier sustained bow dent.
Russian media went into joyful hysterics over this accident (Russia occupied Crimea and invaded Ukrainian mainland territories, de-facto being at aggressive war with Ukraine, hence so much joy over accident), describing it as a major disaster, with stunning mistakes in accident description. They wrongly named the vessel as VICTORIA, some wrote, that ''Amercian tanker (!) loaded with coal devastated Ukrainian port'' - so on and so forth. Never take anything Russian media publish for granted.

Tall Ship 'Oliver Hazard Perry' Loses Power, Hits Boats Before Grounding
The U.S. Coast Guard has reported that the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, Rhode Island's official sail training ship, lost power and hit multiple boats before grounding in Newport Harbor, R.I. on Sunday night.

The Coast Guard said the tall ship was leaving Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival with 12 crewmembers aboard when it lost power and began to drift, eventually running aground near Perrotti Park. A 911 dispatcher alerted Coast Guard watchstanders to the incident at about 6:15 p.m.

Coast Guard Station Castle Hill is providing a safety zone around the tall ship.

There are no reported injuries or pollution.

Two response boat crews from Station Castle Hill and personnel from the Narragansett Bay Task Force are helping with the response.

Built by Senesco Marine in Rhode Island in 2015, the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is the first ocean-going full-rigged tall ship built in the United States in over 100 years. The tall ship is a certified Sailing School Vessel and received its USCG Certificate of Inspection in June 2016. It is privately owned by Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides at-sea education programs.

The Coast Guard said incident is under investigation.

One Missing, Six Injured in Platform Explosion on Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana
One person is missing and six others have been injured after an explosion on an oil platform in Lake Pontchartrain near Kenner, Louisiana, Sunday evening, the Coast Guard has confirmed.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from a witness at approximately 8 p.m. of an oil platform explosion.

The Coast Guard said Sunday night that one of the platform workers reported that eight people were aboard the platform at the time of the explosion, and one person did not make it to shore. Six of the seven people taken to shore were brought to the hospital, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard is coordinating search efforts for the missing man. Sector New Orleans has launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small boatcrew, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew, and a MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter air crew. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Jefferson County Parish, and St. Charles Parish also have marine units on scene. Bayou Gauche Fire Department and a good Samaritan vessel are on scene fighting the fire, which has been reduced substantially, the Coast Guard said.

The name of the missing man is not being released at this time.

The cause of the incident is unknown, the Coast Guard said.

Kenner Police Department spokesman Sergeant Brian McGregor told the Times-Picayune newspaper earlier that there were ''a lot of injuries,'' with at least six confirmed and more expected.

St. Charles Parish said on its Facebook page that an oil rig was on fire in the lake near New Orleans and had ''caused the loud sound earlier tonight.''
