Container ships First LNG-Fueled Newbuild Launched
The first of four LNG-fueled container vessels being built for Finnish shipping company Container ships has been launched at Wenchong Shipyard in China.

The launching ceremony for the 1,368 TEU Container ships Nord was held on November 4.

The shipbuilding work of the first vessel continues now on an outfitting pier where interior, such as piping, cabling, smaller machinery and furnishings, of the vessel will be installed. The main engine factory acceptance was completed in September and the LNG tanks have been accepted and are ready to be installed at the shipyard, the company said.

The launching of the first LNG-powered vessel was followed by the keel laying of the second vessel, which is now under construction. The block production for the second vessel is nearly completed and 148 blocks have been accepted. The main engine testing is planned for the end of November, according to Container ships.

As informed, the steel for the third vessel was cut in May and for the fourth vessel in September.

In 2018, Container ships will have the total of four new LNG-fueled vessels in operation in the Baltics and North Sea. The first vessel is expected to start sailing during the first half of 2018, depending on the completion of sea trials.

As of November, the company's fleet comprises a total of thirteen ships, data from Container ships website shows.

On November 10, the company said that its up to EUR 70 million bonds 2015/2016 will be redeemed in advance. The date of the redemption will be December 15, 2017. On the same day, Container ships placed a EUR 60 million senior secured bond under a framework of up to EUR 100 million. As explained, the proceeds from the transaction will be used to refinance the company's existing bond and for general corporate purposes including investments and acquisitions.

"Not only does the bond issue allow the company to lower its cost of financing; it will enable the company to deliver on its ambition of launching Europe's first fully LNG-based supply chain, positioning it at the vanguard of European short sea logistics," Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, CEO of Container ships, commented.

Lauritzen Kosan Entrusts Entire Fleet to OSM Crew Management
Ship management company OSM Maritime Group has been awarded full crew management of Lauritzen Kosan's entire fleet of liquefied gas tankers.

As informed, the agreement covers 26 refrigerated ethylene, semi-refrigerated and pressurized gas carriers.

OSM Crew Management in Copenhagen will coordinate activities for Lauritzen Kosan, which is headquartered in the Danish capital. The Manila office of OSM will perform the crew agency tasks and is currently recruiting additional seafarers, according to OSM.

"Lauritzen Kosan is a major player within its niche… This partnership … will see us assume crew management duties across their … fleet from December this year," Tommy Olofsen, OSM Managing Director Crew Management, said.

Speaking of the decision to award the contract to OSM Maritime Group, Claus Winter Graugaard, Senior Vice President, Head of Fleet Management at Lauritzen Kosan, commented: "We have been looking for a crew manager who is experienced in full-scale technical ship management, thus giving them a full picture understanding of the unique demands of the tanker and LPG industry, including TMSA and OCIMF. We are proud to present OSM Maritime Group as our new partner."

"In partnership with OSM we’ll focus on crew training and further competence development, ensuring that we have the very best people to meet the growing demands in this specialist sector," Graugaard continued.

The latest contract ranks as OSM's largest this year, bringing the number of vessels the company provides services to far beyond the 500 mark.

Alongside Lauritzen Kosan, OSM has also brought JP Morgan, Statoil and Scorpio into the fleet, amongst others, this year. The company now offers a global crew pool of more than 11,000 seafarers.
