Troubled tanker sheltered in Kalamata, Greece
Product tanker LEON ZEUS reportedly suffered mechanical damage in Mediterranean off southern Peloponnese, Greece, on Feb 21. Tanker was taken to Kalamata, understood towed, brought to anchor in the morning Feb 23, to fix the problem. As of 0600 UTC Feb 24, she remained in the same position. LEON ZEUS with 32,000 tons of gas oil on board is en route from Tuapse Russia to Tarragona Spain.

Diamond Princess Crew Allowed to Return Home as Coronavirus Claims 3rd Life in Japan
Seventy crew members on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) said in a report.
The information is being released after the Japanese Ministry of Health said in an update that 55 crew and two passengers tested positive to the virus, pushing the total count of Coronavirus infections on the cruise ship to 691.

Piraeus Bank, ORIX Corporation to Provide Financing for Greek Maritime Sector
Athens-based Piraeus Bank has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with ORIX Corporation, a Japan and US-listed company, for the provision of financing solutions to the Greek maritime sector.
ORIX is a financial services group with nearly USD 100 billion in operating assets across 37 countries and regions, and a history of over nearly 50 years in the global maritime sector.
Piraeus Bank, on the other hand, has an overall portfolio intended for Greek Shipping exceeding USD 2.5 billion.

Report: Iran to Acquire 158 New Ships
The Iranian government has unveiled a massive newbuilding program in an effort to modernize the country s fleet.
Iran plans to expand its fleet with a total of 158 new vessels, Tehran Times cited the Industry Ministry s Supreme Maritime Council as saying.
"We have the construction of 158 vessels on the agenda; about 62-70 percent of which will be built inside the country," Siamak Seyed Marandi said.

Korean Prosecutors to Appeal MV. Stellar Daisy Ruling
The Busan District Prosecutors Office plans to appeal to a higher court regarding the sinking case of South Korean ore carrier MV. Stellar Daisy, the International Stellar Daisy Network said.
To remind, MV Stellar Daisy sank in 3,400 meters of water in the South Atlantic Ocean in March, 2017, and only 2 sailors from the Philippines were rescued from the 24 crew members, including 8 Korean and 16 Filipinos.

LPG tanker suffered fire, anchored at Kalamata
LPG tanker EPIC BURANO suffered fire in engine room in the evening Feb 19 in Mediterranean sea S of Peloponnese Greece, sailing in eastern direction after leaving Malta anchorage, port of destination unknown. Tanker was disabled, adrift for about 24 hours, resumed sailing in the afternoon Feb 20, fire extinguished by crew.

Ferries collision in Canaries waters.
Ferries BENCOMO EXPRESS and VOLCAN DE TABURIENTE collided at Los Cristianos port entrance, southwest coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, in the morning Feb 23. Both ships suffered damages, but resumed their services later in the day after weather improved. Stormy weather with strong wind and high waves contributed to accident.

There is need for Kenya to emphasize on world class sea port
Imagine a situation where Kenya is trading with the whole world, producing world-class products and enriching its citizens; consumers enjoying cheaper products, and exporters exploiting expanded opportunities.
Away from dreamland, I believe a more open Kenya is indeed possible. According to the World Bank, there have been 15 economies over the last 50 years that managed to grow at the rate of 7 per cent a year for more than 15 years.

ARA gasoline stocks drop by 3% - Insights Global
Gasoline stocks held in independent storage in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) refining and storage hub fell 3% to 1.1 million tonnes in the week to Thursday, data from Dutch consultancy Insights Global showed.

QP books 3 MTPA throughput capacity at French LNG terminal
An affiliate of Qatar Petroleum (QP) and the French LNG terminal operator Elengy, a subsidiary of ENGIE Group, entered into a long-term agreement for LNG receiving, storage and regasification services at the Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG Terminal in France.
Under the agreement, Qatar Terminal Limited (QTL), a subsidiary of QP, will subscribe to the equivalent of almost three million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of the terminal s throughput capacity for a term up to 2035.

Contanda and BW Terminals to merge under leadership of Mike Suder
U.S.-based bulk liquid storage providers Contanda LLC ("Contanda") and BW Terminals, Inc. ("BW Terminals") today announced plans to merge. Both companies have been under common ownership since December, when institutional investors advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management acquired Contanda.
