Indian Coast Guard saves 46 crew members of research ship
MANGALURU: In a major search and rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard rescued 46 crew members of Sagar Sampada, an ocean research vessel, after a fire was reported on it on Friday night. Though the ship has suffered damage, all the 46 crew members reached New Mangalore Port safely on Saturday.
Sagar Sampada, a marine life research vessel, with a crew of 30 and a team of 16 scientists, was sailing 40 nautical miles off Mangaluru coast when she made a distress call to the Coast Guard. She was sailing back to her home port at Kochi."We received the distress message at our Ops Room at 10 pm. On receipt of the information, the Coast Guard District Headquarters-3 diverted an Indian Coast Guard Ship, Vikram, based at New Mangalore Port, from her usual patrol trip.
We also diverted ICGS Sujay, a Paradip port-based coast vessel which was patrolling Karnataka coast to carry out the search and rescue operation," Coast Guard Commander DIG S S Dasila said. Both the ships reached the site at 12.10 am on Saturday and commenced the fire-fighting operation.
Simultaneously, ICGS Vikram commenced operation to cool the front part of the vessel using external fire-fighting equipment. The joint fire-fighting team entered the accommodation areas, where the fire was reported and cost controlled thee. They also doused the fire by spraying water using water jets through the vessel's porthole near the affected compartment, Dasila said.
After successfully dousing the fire, the vessel was escorted to New Mangalore Port and berthed safely. The vessel and crew, including the scientists are safe, Dasila said. The commander, along with the medical team, visited the ship and interacted with thecrew members and scientists. He said Coast Guard is ready to handle any situation.

KHI: Bulker Divinegate Delivered at DACKS
Japanese shipping company Indigo Marine Shipping has taken delivery of Divinegate, a 61,000 dwt bulk carrier newbuild, shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries said.
The Ultramax vessel was handed over to Indigo at the Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) shipyard in Dalian City, China, on March 15, 2019. The facility is jointly operated by KHI and China COSCO Shipping.
Featuring a length of 199.9 meters and a width of 32.24 meters, Divinegate has a capacity of 77,539 cbm.
The Liberia-flagged ship can accommodate up to 25 people and reach a speed of 14.5 knots.
The vessel has a flush deck with a forecastle and five holds that are designed for optimum transport of grains, coal, ores and steel products. Four 30-ton deck cranes are installed along the center in between the hatch covers to enable cargo loading and unloading in ports that lack cargo handling facilities, according to KHI.
Divinegate employs various technologies to achieve maximum fuel economy, including an energy-saving, electronically-controlled main diesel engine, a bow designed to reduce wave resistance, high propulsive efficiency propellers, and a rudder bulb system with fins (RBS-F) and semi-duct system with contra fins (SDS-F), which all contribute to the vessel s enhanced propulsion performance.
Additionally, the bulker incorporates various energy-saving technologies, which reduce both fuel consumption and emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby complying with the EEDI Phase 2 requirements.
Earlier this month, another 61,000 dwt bulker was delivered to Indigo Marine at DACKS. The ship in question is Captain Haddock and it flies the flag of the Marshall Islands.

Russian Shipyards, Manufacturers Targeted by New US Sanctions
Six Russian companies, including shipbuilders and marine equipment manufacturers, have been sanctioned by the United States, in coordination with Canada and the EU.
As informed, the new sanctions announced on March 15 are in response to Russia s "unjustified" military actions against three Ukrainian vessels and the capture of Ukrainian sailors in the Black Sea in November 2018.
In addition, the sanctions target individuals and entities playing a role in the illegal annexation of Crimea, and backing of illegitimate separatist government elections in eastern Ukraine, according to the US Department of the Treasury s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
The actions are said to "underscore continued transatlantic unity in responding to Russia s aggressive actions in Ukraine and its violation of international law."
Specifically, the sanctions target six Russian defense firms with operations in Crimea, several of which misappropriated Ukrainian state assets to provide services to the Russian military. This is in addition to sanctions imposed to other companies and individuals in Russia.
The firms being designated are shipbuilders Yaroslavsky Shipbuilding Plant and Zelenodolsk Shipyard Plant, equipment manufacturer AO Kontsern Okeanpribor, supplier PAO Zvezda, electronics manufacturer AO Zavod Fiolent and defense component producer GUP RK KTB Sudokompozit.
Five years after its invasion of Ukraine and its attempted annexation of Crimea, Russia continues to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, OFAC said.
On November 25, 2018, Russian authorities opened fire on and rammed three Ukrainian ships off the coast of Crimea, seizing the ships and capturing 24 Ukrainian crew members, who remain illegally detained in Russia. Russia also continues its occupation of Crimea, and the Kremlin has also backed illegitimate elections held by Ukrainian separatists in the so-called Donetsk People s Republic on November 11, 2018.
"The international community is strongly aligned against Russia s naval attacks in the Kerch Straight, purported annexation of Crimea, and support for the illegitimate separatist-conducted elections in eastern Ukraine," Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin pointed out.
In a separate announcement, Chrystia Freeland, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, said: "Alongside our international partners, we call on Russia to immediately release the 24 detained Ukrainian servicemen and return the seized vessels. Russia must allow free and unhindered passage through the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov."
