Metro Ports Joins Green Marine Environmental Certification Program
Terminal operator and stevedoring company Great Lakes Stevedoring DBA Metro Ports has become a Green Marine member by enrolling its Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor terminal into the program.
Green Marine is a voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime transportation industry. The initiative strives to surpass regulatory requirements in measurable ways.

MOL, DSME Secure AIP for Cryo-Powered Regas System for FSRUs
Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering have obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) from Bureau Veritas for the design of a new cold energy use regasification system, Cryo-Powered Regas , for Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs).
FSRUs are floating facilities used for storing and regasifying LNG, which is then pressurized and piped ashore.

Oil, Other Contaminants Removed from Ghost Ship
The operation to remove oil and other contaminants from the crewless cargo ship MV Alta, which washed ashore mid-February in Ballycotton, Co. Cork, Ireland, has been completed.
The ship was drifting for over a year at sea without a single soul on board after its crew had been evacuated by the US Coast Guard back in September 2018 in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Maersk Launches USD 1.5 Bn Share Buyback Program
Danish A.P. Moller - Mærsk A/S has decided to initiate a share buy-back program of up to DKK 10 billion (around USD 1.5 billion).
The company said that the buyback would cover a maximum of 3.12 million shares to be acquired over a period of up to 15 months.
The initiative follows the closure of the second phase of the share buyback, which started in September 2019. The total market value of the shares acquired in the second phase amounted to DKK 3.3 bn (USD 492 million).

Wartsila-Led Consortium to Raise Fuel Efficiency in EU-Funded Project
Finnish technology group Wartsila, together with a consortium of six other industry and academic partners, has been awarded EU funding for a major project aimed at reducing fuel consumption and lowering emission levels for shipping.
The three-year project SeaTech is coordinated by Wartsila and will run until 2023.
The project partners include Huygens Engineer BV from the Netherlands, Estonia s Liewenthal Electronics, Utkilen AS from Norway, the National Technical University of Athens, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and the UK s University of Southampton.

Polaris: Fuel Tanks of Grounded Stellar Banner Intact
The fuel tanks of StellThe fuel tanks of the giant ore carrier that ran aground and developed a heavy list last week some 100 kilometers off the coast of São Luis, in the state of Maranhao, Brazil, remain intact, according to the ship s owner Polaris Shipping.
The South Korean shipping company reportedly told Brazilian miner major Vale that the fuel tanks are located on the stern of the vessel, on the opposite side of the damaged area. As informed earlier by Polaris, the ore carrier experienced bow damage that led to its grounding.ar Banner remain intact, according to Polaris Shipping.

Keel Laid for Russia s 1st LNG-Fueled Passenger Ship
A keel-laying ceremony has been held for Chaika LNG, the first passenger ship in Russia to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), Gazprom said.
The event was held on February 27 at the shipyard of Zelenodolsk Plant named after A.M. Gorky in Zelenodolsk, the Republic of Tatarstan.
Intended for passenger voyages, the new motor vessel, which can accommodate at least 170 people, is expected to be launched as early as this year.

Mercantile & Maritime to Comply with US Sanctions against Rosneft Trading
Singapore-based tanker owner Mercantile & Maritime is planning to end its shipping of Venezuelan oil for Rosneft in line with the sanctions imposed by the United States against the Russian oil giant s Geneva-based trading arm Rosneft Trading S.A.
With a fleet of nine tankers, Mercantile & Maritime was one of the largest shippers for Rosneft Trading over the past year, according to a report from Reuters.

Beypore port awaits backing from major vessel operators
Even after the announcement of an operational incentive by the State government for promotion of cargo shipping through minor ports, cargo delivery at the Beypore port is yet to show an upward spiral.
Major importers are of the view that the crisis in the sector can be resolved only with better cooperation from multi-national vessel operators who could deliver cargo at minor ports like Beypore and Azhikkal.

The Port of Townsville has announced two major contracts for the $193 million Channel Upgrade Project; the largest infrastructure project in the Port s 156 year history.
The contracts, worth a total of more than $10 million, are for rock wall construction and rock delivery.

Varanasi port lags in cargo handling, finds RTI
Fourteen months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Varanasi multimodal terminal located on the Ganga, the terminal has handled only 282 metric tonnes of cargo, as per the government s response to an RTI query filed by a Pune-based NGO. Government estimates had pegged the volume of traffic at the Varanasi terminal at 3.55 million metric tonnes by 2020.
