Tanker lost, probably hijacked, West Africa
All contacts with product tanker ANIS were lost since early morning Mar 3 in position 14 37N 017 28E, some 3 nm off Dakar, Senegal, while actually, tanker was leaving Dakar. No other information since Mar 3, tanker may be hijacked. According to AIS, tanker was bound for Aliaga, Turkey.

Maersk Ship With 13 Indians On Board Catches Fire Near Lakshadweep Island
A Maersk container ship, with 27 crew members on board including 13 Indians, caught fire in the Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep Islands last night, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said today. Four of the ship s crew members are missing while the others have been rescued, it said. The 330-metre-long Maersk Honam, which was en route to Suez from Singapore caught fire last night with flames from the main deck of the ship rising up to its bridge, a height of about 25 metres, it said in a statement. The vessel reported an explosion and fire on board and requested immediate assistance.

LPG tanker grounding on Western Scheldt
LPG tanker EPSILONGAS ran aground on Western Scheldt river while proceeding upstream to Antwerp at 0845 LT Mar 6 near buoy 81, Dutch-Belgian border. Tanker was refloated in about an hour, according to AIS track, and anchored near grounding site for survey. She resumed sailing at around 1140 LT, safely reached Antwerp and has been berthed. Germany Gets Its First Female Cruise Ship Captain
The first female captain has taken the helm of the AIDAsol cruise ship, pertaining to Carnival s Germany-based AIDA Cruises brand, making her the highest-ranking woman on a cruise ship in Germany. Nicole Langosch, aged 34, is the first female captain in the AIDA fleet as well. "I m proud to work at a company that promotes the careers of young women and that has made it possible for me pursue my dream profession. I look forward to my new role as captain on board AIDAsol and am aware of the great responsibility," says Langosch.

Norden Sees First Positive Result in 5 Years
Danish shipping company Dampskibsselskabet Norden A/S returned to black in 2017 driven by a strong performance in the fourth quarter of the year. The company’s profit for the year ended December 31, 2017 was at USD 24.6 million, compared to a loss of USD 45.6 million reported in the previous year. Revenue for the period increased to USD 1.8 billion from USD 1.25 billion reported in 2016. Norden s Dry Cargo and Tankers businesses each reported an adjusted result of USD 14 million, against USD - 52 million and USD 17 million seen in 2016, respectively.

Euroseas Reports First Profit Since 2011, Sets Sights on Consolidation
Marshall Islands-incorporated shipowner Euroseas returned to profit in the fourth quarter of 2017 for the first time since 2011 amid recovery of the dry bulk and containership markets. Specifically, net income for the three-month period ending December 2017 was USD 2 million, while the adjusted net income attributable to the common shareholders was USD 1.1 million. Total net revenues for the quarter were USD 13.5 million representing an 85 pct increase year-on-year.

Maersk Maya Targeted by Pirates
Singapore-flagged oil products tanker Maersk Maya was boarded by pirates while anchored in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on February 22. "While at anchor, the security on watch sighted some perpetrators armed with guns at the ship’s forecastle area," Asian piracy watchdog ReCAAP ICC informed. Once sited, the crew raised the alarm, and sounded the general alarm.

Malaysia Starts Probe into Alleged Bribery at MISC
Malaysia s MISC Berhad (MISC) is currently being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) related to alleged bribery. Local media cited undisclosed sources as saying that the alleged bribery amounts to USD 27.8 million (MYR 108.5 million). MACC launched the probe following information of alleged bribes in the form of fraudulent claims devised between MISC officials and maritime contractors. The parties reportedly filed claims to receive payments for ship maintenance services, but there was no upkeep being done from 2010 to 2013.

MARPOL Amendments Enter into Force
Ship fuel oil reporting requirements and amendments to the regulation for the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships have entered into force, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) informed. Entered into force on March 1, ship fuel oil consumption data reporting requirements are aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of international shipping. The data collection will begin on January 1, 2019, with data reported to IMO at the end of each calendar year.

India seeks global power status: Pentagon
India seeks status as a global power, the Pentagon s top intelligence chief told US lawmakers today, adding that as such New Delhi perceives its strategic forces as necessary elements to achieve that goal. India has put its first domestically built nuclear submarine, the INS Arihant, into service, and is set to take delivery of its second nuclear sub, the INS Arighat, in 2018, Lt Gen Robert Ashley, Director, Defense Intelligence Agency told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. "New Delhi seeks status as a global power and perceives its strategic forces as necessary elements to achieve that goal," Ashley said.

NIMASA seeks safer maritime domain for trade
Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has said that easy trade facilitation between countries can be guaranteed if their maritime domains are safe and secured with human asset, technology, ideas and intellectuality as key drivers.
The Director General of the agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, said this in Lagos when a delegation of Bundeswehr Command and Staff College, a leading educational institution of the German armed forces, Hamburg, Germany, paid a working visit to the agency.

New transformation roadmap, tech to propel Singapore s maritime industry
A new Maritime Transformation Programme (MTP) and the setting up of a data hub, as well as an injection of S$100 million in the Maritime Cluster Funds are among initiatives to position Singapore’s maritime industry for the next phase of growth. These were revealed by Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health Lam Pin Min during the Ministry of Transport’s Committee of Supply debates session on Wednesday (Mar 7).
