Landing craft disabled, drifting off Manila Bay
Landing craft AVIVA 5 with 17 crew and cargo of coal and gravel lost power near Fortune island, Batangas Province, near Manila Bay while en route from Nasugbu, Batangas to Coron, Palawan, says ABC-CBN News citing Philippine Coast Guard PCG. According to PCG, AVIVA 5 was disabled since Apr 7, she was reported to PCG by nearby vessels. Understood crew managed to restore power and get her under way, though at a reduced speed. She is heading towards Batangas port. Her AIS is off since 2016 or 2017.

General cargo ship aground, Baltic sea Update refloated
General cargo ship BALTIC MADONNA was refloated with high tide at around 0020 UTC Apr 10, and moved to Vordingborg, where she was brought to anchor for survey and investigation. No damages, no spill reported. The ship has a cargo of containers and steel.

Al Oraiq Carries Qatargas 1st LNG Cargo to Pavilion Gas
Liquefied natural gas tanker Al Oraiq, chartered by Doha-based LNG firm Qatargas, carried the company s inaugural LNG cargo to Pavilion Gas in Singapore. The Q-Flex vessel delivered the LNG shipment to the Singapore LNG Receiving Terminal on Jurong Island.

Creditors to Place STX Offshore under Court Receivership Again
South Korean shipbuilder STX Offshore & Shipbuilding is to be put under court receivership as its union failed to accept the company s restructuring plan. The shipbuilder s creditors, led by the state-run Korea Development Bank (KDB), said that they would place the financially troubled company under court receivership "in principle", according to Yonhap News Agency.

Cargo ship URAL with Russian military cargo released, $4 mil cargo seized
Ro-ro cargo ship under Russian name URAL but operated by Mersin-based Turkish company, arrested at Sfax, Tunisia, on Feb 15, was released on Apr 6 without her cargo of military equipment, which has been seized by Tunisian authorities. According to a number of reports, cargo was a complex shipment of everything required to set up military camp , including armored vehicles and weaponry. URAL sailed from Novorossiysk, bound for Douala, Cameroon, but Russia vehemently denied presence of any arms on board. But as vehemently, Tunisian sources insist on arms being part of the shipment.

Bulk carrier damaged by ice, Great Lakes
Bulk carrier CALUMET on Apr 6 was damaged by ice above Soo Locks, Sault St. Marie, St Marys River, between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, proceeding upstream, reported 9and10news.com. Laker was taken back to Soo Locks for temporary repairs. On Apr 8 CALUMET left Sault St. Marie, bound for Toledo OH., to complete repairs, ETA Apr 9.

Major fire in Timaru port, New Zealand
Trawler DONG WON 701 caught fire after explosion at around 2130 NZ time Apr 9 at Timaru, New Zealand. As of 0000 NZ time Apr 10, some 10 engines were fighting fire, plus tug or tugs with water cannons. Three crew were hospitalized. No other information yet available. ONE s 1st Ultra Large Boxship Splashed at Imabari
The first magenta containership of the Japanese merged containership business, Ocean Network Express (ONE), has been launched at Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan. The 14,000 TEU ship is named ONE Manato and will now undergo final touches before it gets delivered in December 2018, data from VesselsValue shows. It is the first tailor-made boxship for the company, featuring the magenta livery and ONE logo on its hull, as the current fleet is comprised of a combination of container vessels that have been serving the Japanese trio respectively.

Maersk Honam Battling a Fire for Over a Month
The fire which erupted on board Danish-flagged containership Maersk Honam over a month ago continues to burn. However, the fire remains under control, a spokesperson from Maersk Line, owner of the ship, told World Maritime News. The Indian Coast Guard managed to localize the blaze on board the ultra large containership on March 9, three days after the company reported a major fire in one of its cargo holds. The vessel has been taken under tow and the plan is to bring it alongside and discharge cargo in a port with proper facilities and capabilities.

India, Korea to sign pact for seafarers to work on Korean ships: Gadkari
Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways and Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari said on Sunday that India and South Korea are set to strengthen their relations in the field of shipping and ports and will sign an agreement that will facilitate Indian seafarers to work on Korean ships.
"The undertaking with the Republic of Korea for mutual recognition of Certificate of Competency (CoC) will be beneficial to both the countries as Korea is a large ship owning nation while India is a large seafaring nation with around 1,54,349 Indian seafarers," the Minister said before leaving for Seoul.

European project presents the way forward for maritime digitalisation
At their final Conference taking place in Copenhagen, the EU funded project Efficien Sea 2 demonstrated a wide range of digital solutions for the 200 participants from a wide range of stakeholders in the maritime domain. Dubai Smart Coast system to issue maritime forecast, alerts
Dubai Municipality has launched Dubai Smart Coast System for the presentation of the Dubai Maritime Database and Maritime Forecasting System. The system, a revamp of the Dubai Coast website which has been operating since 2003, was launched during the Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Monday. A mobile app of Dubai Smart Coast will be available to the public early May.

Shipping climate talks expose EU divisions
EU negotiators are in London this week to convince emerging economy giants of the need for urgent action to curb pollution from the shipping industry.
