Expanded Capacity Boosts Scandlines Earnings
Danish ferry operator Scandlines managed to increase revenue and boost profitability in 2017 in line with the expectations for the year. Total revenue grew by 4 percent to EUR 487 million in 2017, from EUR 480 million in 2016, driven mainly by the continued positive development on the Rostock-Gedser route. Traffic machine revenue from both routes grew by 6 percent to EUR 352 million, from EUR 333 million reported a year earlier, on the back of expanded capacity, intensified marketing efforts and particularly strong performance in the freight segment, which recorded 12 percent growth in traffic volume.

Record VLCC Scrapping Insufficient to Ease Market Pressure
Recycling of record number of older very large crude carriers (VLCCs) during the first quarter of this year prompted by oversupply and OPEC cuts was unable to ease the sustained market pressure in the tanker market. Namely, a total of 21 VLCCs were removed from the global fleet year to date. The scrapping of veteran crude carrier giants already broke last year s record of 13 ships mid-March with a total of 16 VLCCs sent for demolition.

KOTC Orders Four Product Tankers from Hyundai Mipo
Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) has returned to Korean shipbuilder Hyundai with an order for four product tankers. The company inked a contract with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for the construction of four 48,000 dwt product carriers on April 24. As stipulated in the USD 167.6 million deal, the delivery of the quartet is planned for 2020, the final ship being scheduled to join KOTC s fleet in May.

MPA signs pact to develop future-ready seafarers
Singapore is ramping up efforts to develop human capital for the seafaring industry. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed yesterday aims to help develop a future-ready pool of seafarers by arming them with the skills to cope with trends towards digitalisation and automation in the maritime sector. The agreement was signed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Singapore Shipping Association and Singapore Maritime Employers Federation.

Ferry ran aground, Luzon, Philippines
Ferry JACK DANIEL ran aground in position 13 10N 123 17E in Southern Luzon waters some 2 nm off Rawis, Albay Province, Philippines, at around 0500 ICT Apr 24, while en route from Pantao port after completing repairs. Understood there are no passengers on board, only 24 crew. extent of damages yet unknown. Reportedly, at 2100 ICT ferry was still aground.

DHT Holdings Clinches USD 485 Mn Refinancing Deal
Crude oil tanker owner and operator DHT Holdings has entered into a USD 485 million secured credit facility agreement for the refinancing of 13 of the company s VLCCs. The new credit facility, with a six-year tenor, will bear interest at a rate equal to Libor + 2.40 pct and will have a 20-year repayment profile. The credit facility was provided by ABN Amro, Nordea, Credit Agricole, DNB, ING, Danish Ship Finance, SEB, DVB and Swedbank.

Intermarine Transfers Marine Cargo Terminal to Watco
Ocean transportation and marine logistics services provider Intermarine and its affiliates, Industrial Maritime Carriers (IMC) and Industrial Terminals, Management, have transferred the leasehold ownership of their terminal assets to Watco Companies. Philippine-based terminal operator International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) has signed new union agreements that reinstate pay and conditions for workers at two union ports in Papua New Guinea. Qeshm Ports Throughput Grows 2.2%
A total of 695,454 tons of oil and non-oil products were loaded and unloaded in the ports of Qeshm Island located near the Strait of Hormuz during the Iranian month of Farvardin (March 21-April 20), registering a 2.2% rise compared with the similar period of last year, caretaker of Qeshm division of Iran Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran said. "Non-oil products accounted for close to 682,254 tons and oil products for over 13,200 tons of the total throughput, registering a 1.8% and 32% growth respectively," Ali Ashtari was also quoted as saying by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.

ESPO applauds EU role in achieving the IMO agreement on CO2 reduction target for shipping
ESPO welcomes the agreement reached at global level within the IMO to peak CO2 emissions from shipping as soon as possible and reduce them by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. For European ports, the agreement reached last week is a real milestone and sends a strong signal that the IMO can take action. Shipping being a global industry, ESPO believes that the IMO is the best placed to make progress. In this context, ESPO underlines the instrumental role of the EU and its different stakeholders in reaching this global agreement.

Rotterdam may see first ship-to-ship LNG refuelling in June
The port of Rotterdam expects to see its first ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling operation in June, marking an important milestone in the use of the cleaner burning fuel in shipping. The opening of STS marine refuelling, also known as bunkering, is significant because it makes the cleaner fuel more accessible to shippers, said Cees Boon, senior safety adviser at the Port of Rotterdam. "A lot milestones will follow," said Boon in an email on Tuesday.
