IMO: Next Step in GHG Emissions Cut Should Not Be Postponed
Postponing the adoption of the Initial Strategy on reducing GHG emissions from ships to a future session of MEPC should not be an option, according to the International Maritime Organization.
"We have already approved the roadmap for developing a comprehensive strategy on reducing GHG emissions from ships, and this roadmap includes adoption of an Initial Strategy at next week’s Committee meeting," Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of IMO, said at the third meeting of the Intersessional Working Group on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (ISWG-GHG).

Eighth FSRU for Hoegh LNG
Hoegh LNG Holdings today took delivery of Hoegh Esperanza, its eighth floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). The 170 000 cbm FSRU has been constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea and is designed for open, combined and closed loop regasification operation.
"Hoegh LNG is currently in advanced negotiations for intermediate employment of Hoegh Esperanza on a combined FSRU and LNGC contract with seasonal use in FSRU mode until the anticipated start date of its intended long-term FSRU contract in Chile," the company said.

DP World terminal in Kochi records 19% volume growth
A strong feeder connectivity along the Indian coasts has facilitated the DP World operated India Gateway Terminal at Vallarpadam to register a 19 per cent increase in volume in the first quarter of 2018.
The terminal also handled the highest monthly volume of more than 52,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) in March. In the last fiscal year, the country s first international transshipment gateway successfully handled a volume of more than 5.5 lakhs TEU.

Viking to Order Up to Four Cruise Ships from Vard
Norwegian shipbuilder and ship designer Vard Holdings Limited (VARD) has signed a Letter of Intent for the design and construction of two special cruise vessels for cruise ship owner Viking Cruises. According to the agreement, the two units are scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2021 and the second quarter of 2022, respectively. The deal includes an option for two more vessels to be built by the shipbuilder, a subsidiary of Fincantieri.

MPC Container Ships Buys Sub-Panamax Vessel
Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships is continuing its fleet expansion with the purchase of one more secondhand boxship. The company has inked an agreement to acquire SITC Makassar, a 2,496 TEU vessel built in Germany in 2006. As informed, the ship will be acquired for USD 9.9 million, including initial working capital.

Hamburg Sud, Electrolux Aim to Cut SO2 Emissions in Ports
German carrier Hamburg Süd and Swedish home appliance company Electrolux are teaming up to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in ports. During its layovers in Manzanillo (Mexico), Callao (Peru), Iquique and Puerto Angamos (Chile) between March 11 and 24, the 7,114 TEU Santa Catarina voluntarily used cleaner marine gas oil (MGO) instead of standard heavy fuel oil (HFO) to operate its auxiliary engines and boilers. As explained, both of these must be running in port to supply the ship with electricity and heat.

Integrated VSAT is needed for full fleet communications
VSAT service providers have upgraded their offering with new value-added services, cyber security and faster data burst rates. Integrated VSAT solutions are becoming more advanced by providing connectivity, cyber security and internet of things (IoT) for fleet management. Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) partnered with Alpha Ori, starting in 2017, to provide shipowners with more effective ways of managing their fleets.
This uses secure broadband satellite communications using SingTel s own satellites and teleport infrastructure with cyber security, IoT applications and data analytics. Their combined service tracks and analyses more than 5,000 data points from ship s navigation, engine performance and cargo handling systems.

Russia ends search for Argentine submarine missing since November
Argentina s navy says Russia has ended its help in the search for an Argentine submarine that disappeared in the South Atlantic with 44 crew members aboard. Russia was the last of more than a dozen foreign countries that assisted in searching some 1,500 sq. miles (4,000 sq. km) of the South Atlantic for the ARA San Juan. The multinational search for the submarine employed some of the latest technology in one of the largest efforts of its kind.
