Vessel on fire, drifting in Med Update abandoned, 12 crew rescued
Confirmed it’s BELLATRIX, she issued distress signal in the morning Apr 8, reporting fire in engine room and requesting assistance. MRCC Italy was coordinating rescue operation, 12 crew, all said to be Russian, were rescued by nearby general cargo ship ARIFE (IMO 9266322), abandoned BELLATRIX is said to be towed to Aliaga Turkey, if salvors manage to extinguish fire. Italian sources report BELLATRIX to be Russia flagged, but according to all available databases, she’s registered under Bolivia flag and operated by Ukrainian company, so the crew should be either Ukrainian or mixed Ukrainian and Russian.

Coronavirus could accelerate digitalisation in the shipping industry
When physical contact between members of the crew on board ship and workers at the quayside needs to be kept to a minimum, new routines are required – and quickly. At the Port of Gothenburg there are clear indications of how the Corona pandemic could accelerate digitalisation in what is an otherwise conservative shipping industry.
As a result of the Corona outbreak, the majority of ports throughout the world have been forced to re-examine their routines. Greater use of digital tools has been part of the solution in an effort to maintain an efficient workflow. At the same time, it takes slightly longer at the quayside when the new routines are being introduced. Even though a great deal of the work takes place remotely during the approach, once the vessel is at the quayside a whole range of physical interactions are normally required between the crew and the dockworkers. This could involve everything from inspecting the quality of the cargo to going through permits, safety checklists, and notices of readiness before loading or discharging.

India ports at sea: Cargo handling sinks as coronavirus scuttles economies
Cargo handling at the country’s ports may fall to 10 per cent-12 per cent of capacity this fiscal as the coronavirus pandemic forces countries to lock down and demand in India’s economy sinks.
Cargo handling at major ports grew 2.8 per cent in FY19, but it grew just 1.4 per cent in FY20 till February end.
Cargo volumes in FY21 will decline primarily because of flagging demand for crude oil during the pandemic. A study by CARE Ratings forecasts a dip of 5.1 per cent in India’s crude oil imports in FY21. Liquid cargo inclusive of crude oil and petroleum products accounted for 38 per cent share of the major ports’ traffic in last fiscal.Posted On:9-Apr-2020

Advance bunker planning an answer to tighter HSFO availability
In the run-up to IMO2020 doubts existed whether there would be enough VLSFO available to meet demand, while HSFO was thought to remain in abundance. The reality however is very different, with the corona virus putting a cap on bunker demand, the growing oversupply of VLSFO and a relative HSFO tightness and availability concerns have become the new reality. As the scrubber fleet continued to grow, reports of HSFO non-availability started to appear. India: Coronavirus ' 17,000 seafarers will return only after policy is finalised - The Hindu
Indian seafarers around the world would be allowed to return to the country after the the ban on flights goes and the Government of India finalises a policy on repatriation of Indians, according to a senior official of the Shipping Ministry.
As per government estimates, there were nearly “16,000-17,000” seafarers who need to be brought back to the country. “How they are brought back will depend on the Government of India s policy on allowing people to come from outside. Whatever policy is finalised, the same will be followed in the case of the seafarers also. We will wait for the policy to be firmed up.
