European Goods Dominate Spanish Ports as Project Loads Gain Ground
Almost half of the goods handled by Spanish ports in 2018 had the European continent as their origin or destination, according to Ports of the State, the company responsible for managing Spain s state-owned ports.
Of the 563 million tons handled in Spanish ports in 2018, a record 44 percent, or 246 million tons, had a country in the European continent as origin/destination.
In the past year, Spanish ports handled more than 102 million tons of solid bulk, 181 million tons of liquid bulk, 76 million tons of conventional general cargo, 191 million tons of containers and 62 million tons of RoRo traffic.
The Ports of the State (Puertos del Estado), which includes 46 ports managed by 28 port authorities, further added that project cargoes were becoming more common with Spanish ports receiving more and more orders to transport goods of dimensions outside the usual sizes and weights that are part of large structures that must be handled in wide spaces, with special cranes and skilled personnel.

Sempra Energy, Saudi Aramco Sign Huge LNG Deal for Port Arthur LNG
Subsidiaries of Sempra Energy and Saudi Aramco have signed a heads of agreement (HOA) which anticipates the negotiation and finalization of a definitive 20-year LNG sale-and-purchase agreement.
The deal, signed between Sempra LNG and Aramco Services Company, covers 5 million metric tons each year from the Port Arthur LNG export project under development.
It also includes the negotiation and finalization of a 25% equity investment in Phase 1 of Port Arthur LNG.
"If converted to a sales and purchase agreement (SPA), this will be one of the largest LNG deals ever signed and the largest deal signed since 2013," Giles Farrer, Wood Mackenzie Research Director, said commenting on the deal.
"If the deal is completed, this is likely to mean the Port Arthur facility can proceed to FID by the end of 2019 or early 2020," he added.
"The agreement with Sempra LNG is a major step forward in Saudi Aramco s long term strategy to become a leading global LNG player," Amin Nasser, Saudi Aramco s CEO & President, pointed out.
"We are pleased to partner with affiliates of Saudi Aramco … to advance the development of Sempra LNG s natural gas liquefaction facility in Texas and enable the export of American natural gas to global markets," Jeffrey W. Martin, Chairman and CEO of Sempra Energy, said.
The proposed Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project is expected to include two liquefaction trains, up to three LNG storage tanks and associated facilities that should enable the export of approximately 11 Mtpa of LNG on a long-term basis.
Port Arthur LNG could be one of the largest LNG export projects in North America, with potential expansion capabilities up to eight liquefaction trains or approximately 45 Mtpa of capacity.
Earlier this month, Port Arthur LNG received authorization to export domestically produced natural gas to countries that do not have a free trade agreement with the US.

ITF Calls for Lashing Ban for Foreign Crew on St Lawrence River
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has called on the Transport Canada to ban foreign-crew from undertaking lashing work while vessels are underway in the Saint Lawrence river.
The move comes on the back of an incident, that occurred on May 19, which took the life of a seafarer. Namely, the Sri Lankan second officer fell overboard the Maersk containership Patras in the morning hours. Despite an extensive search and rescue operation his body has not yet been recovered, ITF said.
Investigations undertaken by Transport Canada and the ITF indicate that the man fell overboard whilst lashing, and crew claim that he was the only crew member not wearing fall protection.
"Early reports indicated that this incident occurred while dropping a pilot ladder, however after speaking to the crew and investigating further, we’ve determined that s not the case. This seafarer was handling a 4-meter lashing bar, almost half his weight, when he fell overboard," Peter Lahay, ITF Canadian coordinator, said.
"We will await the finding of official inquiry but from our initial investigations there are serious questions about crew fatigue and the safety procedures on board that need to be answered."
The ITF further said that it invited Maersk to join the global union federation in calling on Transport Canada and the Port of Montreal to ensure that lashing is done by qualified dockers.
