Capesize bulk carrier disabled by fire in South Atlantic
Very large ore carrier STELLAR SAMBA suffered fire in generator in engine room on May 26 off Brazilian coast, caused by leaked oil. Fire was extinguished, no injures reported. The ship is disabled since fire. Master informed Brazilian Maritime Authorities, which sent Navy ship to monitor ship;s condition and provide crew safety. Tug was reportedly contracted, STELLAR SAMBA is to be towed to Brazilian port, probably her port of destination she was ballasting from Singapore to Itaqui Brazil.

Second Delivery of Cranes Arrives at APM Terminals Moin
Terminal operator APM Terminals has taken delivery of the second shipment of Ship-to-Shore and Electric Rubber-Tire Gantry Cranes (ERTGs) at its facility in Moin, Costa Rica. With the additions, APM Terminals Moin remains on schedule for completion in February 2019, when it is expected to raise commerce in Costa Rica by 23%, the operator said citing the Qbis Socioeconomic Impact Study.

Klaipeda LNG Terminal Receives 50th LNG Cargo
On May 25, the 50th LNG reloading operation took place at Lithuanian liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal operated by AB Klaipedos Nafta (KN). The 50th load was delivered to the Klaipeda Port by the Arctic Voyager, which has already visited the facility several times. The LNG carrier brought 140,000 cubic meters of LNG from a liquefaction plant in Norway. Since October 2014, when the FSRU Independence began operations in Klaipeda, the terminal has received 42 LNG imports - 5.4 million cubic meters of LNG.

CMES, ICBC Leasing to Jointly Order Six VLOCs
Chinese companies ICBC Financial Leasing and China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) have formed a joint venture to order six very large ore carriers (VLOCs). The parties informed that they would spend around USD 69.5 million per ship, totalling USD 417 million for the batch, of which USD 125.1 million would be from CMES. The joint venture, in which CMES will hold a 30 percent share, would own the new 325,000 dwt units.

Port of Riga Is Ready to Welcome Large Vessels
Latvian Port of Riga has invested millions of euros in its infrastructure in order to be able to accommodate large vessels. As explained, cargo owners wish to reduce their costs and carry out shipments using ships with a greater deadweight capacity. As a result, the port handled in 2017 almost three times more cargo than in 1997, while the total number of incoming merchant ships dropped from 4,029 in 1997 to 3,422 in 2017.

Intermarine, ZEABORN Form Joint Venture
US-based Maritime Holdings Delaware, a parent company of Intermarine, has entered into a joint venture agreement with German ZEABORN Group. The joint venture entity, ZEAMARINE, will include the transfer of assets and operating entities from ZEABORN s commercial activities as well as ZEABORN-owned Rickmers Line and Maritime Holdings-owned Intermarine, the duo said in a statement. As informed, the joint venture will have more than 75 vessels and is expected to exceed 100 vessels by year-end.

Middle East Demand on the Rise
Demand growth from Asia to the Middle East topped 26% in the first quarter of 2018, but freight rates continue to fall because of chronic over-capacity, according to shipping consultancy Drewry. After a long period of stagnation, the Asia to Middle East container trade went into overdrive in the past few months. Saudi Arabia, the second largest Middle Eastern importer of Asian containerised goods, increased its first quarter inbound volume by 26% to 227,000 TEU.

Tanker collided with berth, S-Petersburg
Product tanker BaltFlot 5 allided with Berth 16 at S-Petersburg Sea Port, Baltic, Russia, at 2135 Moscow time May 25, while proceeding to Lesnoy Mole Road by Korabelny Fairway, with pilot on board. Tanker contacted berth by portside stern, and sustained hull damages above waterline. Tanker after inspection was detained for repairs. Tanker sailed from S-Petersburg on May 27, bound for Yaroslavl, Inner Waterways.

Drewry: Weak Olefin Trade Puts Pressure on LPG Shipowners
Strong fleet growth and weak olefin trade are expected to keep the freight market for Handysize vessels under pressure throughout 2018, shipping consultancy Drewry said.
The market has been under pressure since 2017, but olefin trade growth has averaged 3.1% annually over 2012-17, down from 4% during 2007-12. Although Handysize vessels can also carry LPG, the market is oversupplied with bigger vessels and there is limited employment opportunity in this trade for Handysizes.

Philippines upgrades its navy amid Chinese maritime threat
The Philippine Navy is one of the weakest maritime defence forces in Southeast Asia, leaving the sprawling island nation of over 100 million people vulnerable to threats like China s assertiveness in taking control of disputed territory, according to senior officers, including the top commander.
"A few days ago, we were surprised by the reports that the Chinese have embedded anti-ship missiles and anti-air missiles in three critical island features - Subi, Fiery Cross and Mischief Reefs," a Philippine naval officer told a maritime security seminar in Manila in May.

Disney eyes another island for additional cruise fleet
Disney Cruise Lines has expressed interest in developing a second private island destination in The Bahamas alongside its Castaway Cay property. "The cruise line is preparing to grow its fleet from four to seven ships confirming the company s interest in still finding a second home for its ships in The Bahamas," according to Disney Signature Experience Vice President (VP) of Communications Kim Prunty in a recent statement.
While an exact location for the proposed venture has not been confirmed, the report, published in the Orlando Sentinel, speculated that land on a peninsula called Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera, is the company s desired spot.

DP World Closes Acquisition of Cosmos Agencia Maritima, Peru
Global trade enabler DP World, today announced the successful closing of the acquisition of Cosmos Agencia Maritima S.A.C. (CAM) in Peru. On 18 March, DP World and Andino Investment Holding announced an agreement for DP World to acquire 100% of the shares of CAM, a leading fully integrated logistics provider in Peru, for $315.7 million. This also includes 100% of the shares in Triton Transports and Neptunia, and 50% in Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos S.A., in the Port of Paita, which is the second largest container terminal in Peru.

Mombasa port gets 2 new cranes for SGR cargo
The Mombasa port has received two new rail-mounted gantry cranes from China that are expected to enhance its container handling capacity. The cranes are part of six ordered by the Kenya Ports Authority at a cost of Sh2.12 billion to help handle standard gauge railway cargo.
KPA s head of container operations Mr Edward Opiyo said the port is building capacity following increment in transhipment of cargo in the regional transportation hub.

Deep sea port to be implemented after sorting out mess - Junz
Sabah will implement the big Kudat deep sea port as soon as the new government sorts out the mess left behind by the previous government, revealed Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) vice president Junz Wong.
Junz said the port, which is set in deep waters to handle very large ships, is one of the plans that will be prioritized and set to solve various problems faced by the state such as development and logistics.
"As soon as we are healthy and good enough to implement the big deep sea port in Kudat, that will be one of the prioritized mega projects that we (Warisan-led government) will do," he explained.

Port of Antwerp: Energy transition with re-use of CO2
The transition to a circular, low-carbon economy is a priority for the Port Authority. The first step is to define a CO2 reduction path for the period until 2050. In the meantime the Port Authority is intensifying its efforts towards sustainable energy by among other things building new wind turbines and large-scale facilities for LNG bunkering.
Antwerp Port Authority and the gas infrastructure company Fluxys are carrying out a joint feasibility study for collection, recycling and storage of CO2 for industry.
