Dredger sank, crew safe, Spain
Dredger BARLOVENTO PRIMERO sank in the afternoon May 30 at Suances port entrance, west of Santander, Spain, Bay of Biscay. Three crew are safe. Dredger was carrying out dredging works on port s channel in order to increase its depth. Dredger capsized while sinking, with bow section remaining above the water. The wreck is marked by buoy, channel traffic isn t affected. The cause of sinking wasn t named, probably it was water ingress in aft area.

Grounded bulk carrier blocked port in Cuba Update refloated
May 31: Bulk carrier DESTINY was refloated at night May 30 (though Cuban TV said she was refloated on May 29, in the morning May 30 she was still aground) and taken to Sienfuegos Bay Anchorage. The ship was refloated with the help of tugs. Port pilots said the grounding was caused by a strong current.

Nordic American Tankers Completes Sale of Tanker Duo
Suezmax owner Nordic American Tankers (NAT) has completed the sale of the two tankers announced earlier this month. The sale of the two ships is a strategic move for the company as it makes room for the three newbuildings set for delivery from Korean builder in the second half of 2018. NAT ordered three 157,000 dwt tankers from Samsung Heavy Industries in 2016 in an en bloc transaction. Each tanker cost USD 56.7 million, according to the data from VesselsValue.

Study Supports Case for Methanol as Sustainable Marine Fuel
In anticipation of the entrance into force of IMO s 2020 sulphur cap, methanol is gaining ever greater support as an environmentally-friendly marine fuel. According to the latest findings of the Sustainable Marine Methanol (SUMMETH) project, there are no obstacles to the efficient use of methanol in a converted diesel engine. The research also found that smaller vessel conversion projects are feasible and cost-effective, meeting the existing safety requirements.

Diana s Boxship to Continue Working for Wan Hai
Greek boxship owner Diana Containerships has agreed to extend a time charter contract with Wan Hai Lines (Singapore) for one of its Post-Panamax vessels, the m/v Rotterdam. Under the deal, the company s 6,494 TEU containership will continue working for Wan Hai at a gross charter rate of USD 18,200 per day for a period of up to minimum April 15, 2019, to maximum July 15, 2019.

Four tankers having power outage, unlit
Four tankers including two product and two :PG, anchored at Kandla Port Anchorage, Gulf of Kutch, western India, on May 29 are reported unlit, having no power. Caution advised when navigating at Kandla Anchorage. All four tankers understood to be in a lay-up, probably unmanned or with minimal crew.

Tanker disabled off Spain, sheltered at La Coruna
Chemical tanker MRC HATICE ANA suffered engine failure on May 25 in the Atlantic off Portugal/Spain coast, while en route from Greece to Germany with 2670 tons of paraffin on board. Following events are unclear tanker was adrift for quite some time, resumed moving on May 27, whether under tow or under own power is unknown, at some 6-7 knots speed. On May 29, according to Spanish sources, tanker asked Spain Authorities for shelter, and was granted permission to call La Coruna. She was berthed at La Coruna early in the morning May 30. Ferry engulfed in fire, passengers safe
Ferry PARAY caught fire at Jagoh port, Linnga Archipelago, Indonesia, in the afternoon May 30, on arrival from Penarik. All passengers already landed, so nobody was injured. Fire engulfed the ship in a short time, and judging from photos, there s not much of firefighting around, so probably, ferry will burn out.

GasLog Orders One More LNG Carrier in South Korea
Owner and operator of LNG carriers GasLog has unveiled a new contract for the construction of a 180,000 cbm LNG carrier at Korean yard Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). The LNG carrier (HN 2262) with low pressure two stroke (LP-2S) propulsion is expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2020, according to the company. GasLog has also signed a seven-year time charter contract with a wholly owned subsidiary of Centrica for the newbuilding.

Greece Operates a Fleet Valued at USD 105 Bn
Greek ship owners saw a major fleet development in the ten years from the financial crisis and today operate a fleet valued at USD 105 billion. 20,000 TEU COSCO Shipping Virgo Delivered
Chinese container shipping major COSCO Shipping Corporation has taken delivery of its fifth 20,000 TEU containership, COSCO Shipping Virgo. Built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, the ship is 399.8 meters long and 58.6 meters wide. It boasts a deck area equivalent to almost four standard football fields and can achieve a speed of 22.5 nautical miles per hour. COSCO Shipping Virgo has a maximum carrying capacity of 20,119 TEU, and it is equipped with 1,000 reefer sockets.

Brazil s trucker strike entered the ninth straight day amid signs that the protests may be shrinking. While there s no official data yet on the number of the blockades across the country on Tuesday, industry reports indicated that many were halted after the government signed decrees meeting trucker demands. Colombo Port volumes up in 1st quarter, fastest growing Port after Singapore
Sri Lanka s Ports Authority (SLPA) said the Colombo Port received 1.7 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first quarter of 2018, which is a 16.2 percent growth from a year earlier, making it one of the fastest growing ports globally. Colombo Port s transshipment volumes grew 20.9 percent to 1.32 million TEUs, with March volumes up 19.4 percent to 477,043. Only Singapore grew at a faster rate of 16.5 percent among major ports, the SLPA said, quoting a ranking by Alphaliner Monthly, a shipping publication.

Chennai port vies to become major fuel hub for ships
Chennai Port, located strategically between Singapore and Fujairah, the world s first and second largest bunker fuel suppliers, has plans to make the south Indian city a bunker capital on the East coast. Efforts are underway to construct a dedicated bunker berth inside the port to accommodate bunker tankers, a move which is expected to swell the port s revenues.
Fuel used to run a ship is referred as bunker fuel and world over, supply of bunker fuel is one of the major revenue sources for ports. While ships require heavy oil to run their engines, diesel oil is used to run generators and smaller machinery.

Vietnam: Abandoned imports pile up at City ports
Following China s ban on import of plastic wastes, a lot of them are coming instead to Viet Nam, but with consignees failing to claim shipments, the wastes are piling up at ports including in HCM City.
As of late May 389 containers arriving in 6,801 consignments are lying in ports for more than 90 days without being claimed by their owners, a customs official told Nguoi lao dong (The labourer) newspaper. According to a Ministry of Finance circular, goods left unclaimed for more than 90 days at ports could be seized and sold.
