Egypt Opens New Multipurpose Terminal at Damietta Port
Egypt s Damietta Port Authority has inaugurated a new multipurpose terminal at an investment cost of EGP 1.36 billion (USD 81.3 million).
The terminal includes a 630-meter-long, 17-meter-deep berth and is equipped with a backyard area of 50,000 square meters with anticipated capacity of about 4 million tons per year.
It has been established under the supervision of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority (AFEA) and implemented by a number of Egyptian national companies.
The completion of the works at the new terminal in Damietta Port were revealed by the country s Minister of Transport, Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir.
Al-Wazir highlighted a number of project advantages such as being equipped with all necessary facilities to serve ships and cargoes including seawater firefighting pumps, rainwater drainage, facilities for feeding ships with fresh water and supplying ships with electricity within OPS technique as well as oil and waste reception facility from ships.
"This terminal will contribute to reduce vessel waiting time outside the port, increase cargo handling volumes, encourage further ship with bigger sizes and types, and buttress storage capacity inside port area," Al-Wazir said.

US to Inject USD 292 Mn into Its Ports
The United States has decided to invest USD 292.7 million through the new Port Infrastructure Development Program with the aim of developing the country s ports.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the new program aims to support public coastal ports by improving the safety, efficiency, or reliability of goods movement into, out of, or within a port.
"This major investment in the Port Infrastructure Development Program will help strengthen, modernize, and improve our country s maritime systems and gateway ports," Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Transportation Secretary, said.
Investments in port transportation infrastructure would be awarded on a competitive basis for projects located either within the boundary of a coastal seaport, or outside the boundary of a coastal seaport, and directly relate to port operations or to an intermodal connection to a port.
The USD 292.7 million funding includes USD 92.7 million to be invested in 15 coastal seaports that handled the greatest number of loaded foreign and domestic TEUs in 2016.
The deadline to submit an application for the Port Infrastructure Development Program is September 22, 2019.

Frontline, BSM Tankers in Suspected Attack in Gulf of Oman
Two tankers were damaged in a suspected attack in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz on June 13.
The product carrier Kokuka Courageous, operated by BSM Ship Management (Singapore), suffered damage to the starboard side. The company said that a full-scale emergency response was launched after the incident and the vessel s crew of 21 abandoned ship.
"The master and crew abandoned ship and were quickly rescued from a lifeboat by the vessel Coastal Ace, a nearby vessel," BSM said in a statement.
"One crew man from the Kokuka Courageous was slightly injured in the incident and is receiving first aid on board the Coastal Ace."
The 27,000 dwt Kokuka Courageous remains in the area and is not in any danger of sinking, the company said, adding that the cargo of methanol is intact. The vessel is about 70 nautical miles from Fujairah and about 14 nautical miles from the coast of Iran.
The Coastal Ace is in the vicinity at a safe distance from the damaged ship and is awaiting instructions from the UK Marine Trade Operations which is responding to the incident.
The second tanker that was attacked in the Gulf of Oman is the 110,000-dwt LR2 Front Altair, owned by Norwegian company Frontline.
Norwegian newspaper VG cited a company spokesperson as saying that the vessel suffered a fire following the incident. All 23 crew evacuated the ship and were rescued by a nearby vessel, the Hyundai Dubai.
Taiwan s CPC Corporation informed that the extent of damage aboard the ship and the oil leak after the suspected attack are yet to be confirmed.

World s 1st Autonomous Ship to Feature MacGregor Automated Mooring System
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, and Kongsberg Maritime have entered into an agreement where MacGregor will deliver an automated mooring system for the world s first autonomous containership, Yara Birkeland.
As explained, this will enable mooring operations to be undertaken without human intervention and supports the effective operation of the fully electric, zero-emission vessel.
The automated mooring system is scheduled to be delivered during the second half of 2019, according to MacGregor.
"We worked very closely with Kongsberg to identify the most suitable mooring solution and are proud to have developed an innovative, fully electrical system which increases safety and eco-efficiency compared with conventional mooring operations," Hoye Hoyesen, Vice President, Advanced Offshore Solutions, MacGregor, commented.
As World Maritime News previously reported, Kalmar, also part of Cargotec, will provide the autonomous loading and unloading solution for Yara Birkeland, as well as transportation between the fertilizer production facilities and the quay.
Yara Birkeland is expected to reduce emissions and improve road safety by removing up to 40,000 truck journeys annually in a densely populated area of Norway. Powered by hydroelectric and a battery energy storage system, Yara Birkeland and the port infrastructure will produce no harmful greenhouse gasses for the entire operational lifecycle.
The containership will transport fertilizer from Yara s Porsgrunn plant via inland waterways to the deep-sea ports of Larvik and Brevik, a journey of 31 nautical miles.
Being built by Norway s shipbuilder Vard, Yara Birkeland will be one of the first Maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) to enter commercial operations. The move to unmanned operations will be phased, giving Yara International and Kongsberg time to test the advanced systems that enable operation without a human at the helm.
When delivered from the Yard early in 2020, Yara Birkeland will be a manned vessel. Autonomous functions will gradually be implemented, tested and validated, with the target of performing fully autonomous unmanned operations by 2022.

Oslo-based Hunter Group has eight identical 336-meter-long vessels being built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard. They are scheduled for delivery in late 2019 and 2020.
The Hunter vessels will be managed from OSM s base in Arendal, Norway, which offers specialist tanker services.
"This is the beginning of a strong strategic alliance between two Norwegian headquartered companies with clear global ambitions," Erik A. S. Frydendal, Hunter Group CEO, commented.
"We have our sights set on making a real impact within the segment when the new vessels arrive, and we need a partner with the technical management expertise to really fulfill the potential we see ahead of us," he added.

Canada to Secure Bigger Share of Asian LPG Market with New Terminal
With the recent launch of Canada’s first marine export facility for propane the country is set to attract a good share of the Asian LPG market, according to shipping consultancy Drewry.
Altagas s Ridley Island Export Terminal (RIPET), located in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, dispatched its first cargo on May 23, 2019 aboard the VLGC Sumire Gas for delivery to Japan s Kyushu LPG Fukushima terminal.
Drewry said that, with the commencement of operations at RIPET, the total voyage time on a Prince Rupert to Chiba trade will be just 10 days, compared with 25 days for a voyage between Houston and Chiba, via the the Panama Canal.
"Hence RIPET has the potential to have a l negative impact on LPG tonne-mile demand," Drewry said.
The total capacity of the terminal is 1.2 million tonnes per annum, which translates to two VLGCs per month on average.
Canada s share in LPG seaborne trade will increase with the commencement of exports from RIPET, and consequently, the country will try to cater to the biggest LPG consumers.
"A rise in Canadian LPG production will also impact Asian LPG imports from other regions. In our view lower shipping costs and increased competitiveness of Canadian LPG with that of the US and Middle East will favour the former."
The opening of the facility will also be of benefit to China, which is actively seeking different sources of LPG with the recent escalation in the U.S.-China trade war, Drewry added.
Although RIPET is important, major changes in demand for VLGCs are not expected. However, the terminal is set to impact LPG pricing, as it will lead to an increase in the outflow of Canadian and U.S. LPG supplies, thereby strengthening West Canada and Mont Belvieu LPG prices.
