Freighter suffered explosion in Reykjavik harbor
General cargo ship BLIKUR suffered explosion in engine room while entering Reykjavik, Iceland, in the afternoon Jun 25. There wasn t fire, only a lot of smoke, said Morgunbladid mbl.is, citing Eimskip liaison officer. The ship was brought to anchor, and later berthed. Reportedly some crew were examined by medics for possible smoke inhalation. BLIKUR arrived at Reykjavik from the UK, as of morning Jun 27 she was berthed at Reykjavik.

Cargo ship grounding, Russian Inner Waterways
General cargo ship IRKUTSK reportedly ran aground at 0030 UTC Jun 27 on Don river downstream from Azov port, where she was heading from Kerch Strait outer Anchorage. No information on damages or leaks, accident isn t confirmed yet.

Cruise ship MEIN SCHIFF 3 hit pier, damaged in Norway, VIDEO
Cruise ship MEIN SCHIFF 3 broke off her moorings, or went out of control while maneuvering, in Honningsvaag harbor, Norway, at around 2015 LT Jun 26. Northern Norway is experiencing rough weather with strong wind and rain, MEIN SCHIFF 3 was caused by gush of wind, obviously. MEIN SCHIFF 3 was taken under control by tugs, and brought to anchor in harbor. Both pier and ship s stern reportedly sustained damages, it can be seen on video. Cruise ship left Honningsvaag early in the morning Jun 27, bound for Longyearbyen, Norway.

LPG tanker interrupted trans-Pacific voyage after crew death
LPG tanker SEASUCCESS had to interrupt her voyage on Jun 24, in North Pacific off Mexico coast, and call Mexican Ensenado port, to disembark dead crew member and undergo all required procedures. The ship is en route from Trinidad to Busan, Korea. Seaman reportedly died from natural cause, asthma was mentioned by local news agency Zetatijuana. SEASUCCESS entered Ensenada on Jun 26, left same day.

Bulk carrier troubled in Lake Superior
Bulk carrier ALGOMA INNOVATOR is having problems in Lake Superior, according to Great Lakes watchdog Great Lakes and Seaway Shipping and to laker s track. The ship went NUC since around 1440 UTC Jun 26 northwest of Whitefish Point, while en route from Thunder Bay to Toledo. Tug AVENGER IV (IMO 5401297) spotted moving towards bulk carrier, which as of 0400 UTC Jun 27 was still drifting in northern direction.

Nova Marine Carriers Swoops Down on 18 Bulker Deal
Swiss-based Nova Marine Carriers is embarking upon an ambitious fleet investment plan which has seen the company sign a construction deal for 18 bulkers in China.
Namely, the company has placed an order for six 8,000 dwt and 12 6,000 bulk carriers at Chinese Zhejiang Xinle Shipbuilding. As disclosed by the shipbuilder, the design of the new bulkers allows for improved energy-saving and operating efficiency.

Total, Pavillion Energy Firm Plans on LNG Bunker Supply in Singapore
Total and Pavilion Energy, through their subsidiaries Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions and Pavilion Gas, have signed Heads of Agreement (HoA) to jointly develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker supply chain in the port of Singapore.
The agreement covers the shared long-term time charter of a new generation LNG bunker vessel to be commissioned by Pavilion Gas by 2020 and an LNG supply arrangement between the two companies enabling Total to deliver LNG bunker to its customers.

Europe Aims to Make Shipping More Attractive for Women
European Transport Workers Federation (ETF) and the European Community Shipowners Associations (ECSA) have discussed possible solutions to increase women s participation in the shipping industry in Europe.
Currently only 2% of the seafaring workforce available for the EU fleet consist of women, whilst gender equality is being put at the heart of the EU s fundamental values for sustainable and inclusive growth.

NAT Sells Three More Suezmax Veterans
Bermuda-based tanker owner Nordic American Tankers (NAT) has sold three more Suezmax tankers built in 1997, bringing the total number of vessels sold over the recent past to eight.
These transactions will bring a cashflow close to USD 80 million, NAT said. All the eight ships were 20 years old or older and their disposal has resulted in reducing the average age of the NAT vessels to about 10 years.

Skangas Fuels First Ship with Liquefied Biogas
Skangas has supplied Furetank s chemical/product tanker M/T Fure Vinga with liquefied biogas (LBG), representing the company s first delivery of this renewable and environmentally friendly fuel to a marine company.
The fueling took place at the Port of Gothenburg, transferring the fuel directly from a tanker truck to the ship. The Swedish LBG was delivered to Furetank s ship from Skangas parent company Gasum s biogas facility in Lidkoping. The Fure Vinga was delivered from the shipyard in April this year and is one of two vessels in Furetank s fleet powered by liquefied gas.

Freighter collided with 3 boats, 2 of them sank, Vietnam
General cargo ship BAO KHANH 16 collided with three ships of boats, one identified as NB-6589 (no other information available), on Jun 24 off Cam Pha port, Quang Ninh Province, northeast Vietnam, Gulf of Tonkin. NB-6589 suffered hull breach. Two other boats sank, one on collision site, another one while attempting to reach the shore. No casualties reported.

Shone wants to automate container ships
While everybody is focused on self-driving cars, Shone is working on autonomous technologies for container ships. The startup doesn’t want to turn those giant ships into unmanned vehicles, but it wants to help seafarers and make ships more efficient.
After attending Y Combinator, Shone recently raised a $4 million round from Alven, Liquid 2, Paul Graham, David Marcus and D. Scott Phoenix. "The basic idea is that autonomous ships are coming. Overall, it seems unavoidable," co-founder and CEO Ugo Vollmer told me. "And yet, there are still 25 people on the boat and it runs on Windows."

Annual marine fish landings increase by 5.6% in 2017
India s marine fish landings are showing signs of revival with the annual fish landings in 2017 registering 5.6% growth as against the previous year, state-run Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) said on Tuesday.
The fish landing data also reveals that Cyclone Ockhi, at the end of 2017, had a devastating effect on the fisheries sectors of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Oil sardines also showed a revival in landings as against a decline in the past few years.

Marine Environment Protection for Southeast Asia Seas Project Launched
Seven ASEAN countries have formally launched an ambitious initiative aimed at improving the environmental health of the seas in the region, through the implementation of key International Maritime Organization (IMO) marine environment protection treaties.
Senior decisions makers of maritime administrations of the beneficiary ASEAN countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) met for their first high-level regional meeting in Bali, Indonesia (25-27 June), to kick-start the "Marine Environment Protection for Southeast Asia Seas (MEPSEAS) Project".

Progress of clean-up operations in Port of Rotterdam
Over the weekend of 23 and 24 June, a serious water pollution incident occurred in the 3rd Petroleumhaven in Rotterdam. The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Rijkswaterstaat are coordinating the clean-up operations. The Port Authority will be issuing regular updates regarding the progress of these clean-up operations.

New terminal launched in Sihanoukville port
After more than three years of construction work to increase its cargo handling capacity, the conclusion of the expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port was marked on June 25 with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The expansion of the port, which began in early 2015, has come at a cost of $74 million, which was financed with a soft loan from the Japanese Cooperation Agency (JICA).

SLPA to seek Cabinet approval for new East Container Terminal development plan
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority will soon seek Cabinet approval for the new development plan of the East Container Terminal (ECT) of the Colombo port, according to a top SLPA official.
"We will be shortly seeking the Cabinet approval to go ahead with the development of the East Container Terminal. It is a top requirement for SLPA s growth," SLPA Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake said.

India s leading maritime association, The Maritime Association of Shipowners Shipmanagers and Agents (MASSA) has expressed its serious concern as Government of India has not taken appropriate steps so far to allow and facilitate an exit of crew change arrangements for Indian as well as foreign seafarers from about 10 prominent ports of India. These ports include important maritime destinations like Ratnagari, Kochi, Karaikal, Jaigarh, Dhamra, Dighi, Revdanda, Sagar, Jakhau, etc.
