Inmarsat, HHI Unit Ink Deal to Fast-Track Maritime Digitalization
Satellite communications company Inmarsat has signed a business cooperation agreement that allows Hyundai Global Service (HGS) to offer ship owners and managers "a digital total care solution route to maritime digitalization".
HGS was established in 2016 by South Korean parent group Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) as a digital transformation solutions provider to optimize ship operation and performance.
As informed, the agreement paves the way for cooperation that will include the use of Fleet Xpress dedicated bandwidth services by HGS to support its digital services for ship owners plus recognition of HGS as a certified application partner (CAP) within Inmarsat s digital ecosystem.
The formal agreement has been announced after the completion of trials on board three ships over a three-month period, testing a variety of sensor-driven applications measuring voyage and equipment operating data including fuel consumption and vibration monitoring, plus HGS analytics and reporting services.
Specifically, the Inmarsat CAP program allows application and software developers to choose their own route to digital enablement via either a dedicated bandwidth service over Fleet Xpress or FleetBroadband or through a dedicated API that allows access to fleet data, Inmarsat s cloud-based IoT platform.
The terms of the agreement offer HGS the opportunity to expand its digital total care solution to encompass different applications aimed at helping owners and managers to enhance ship efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Stefano Poli, VP, Business Development, Inmarsat Maritime described the agreement with HGS as a significant milestone in the offering being made to third-party service providers enabling maritime digitalization.
"The Hyundai-Inmarsat agreement is effectively the first of its kind and marks the commercial service introduction of Inmarsat s Fleet Xpress dedicated bandwidth services as part of our portfolio of solutions for certified application providers," he said.
"With this new service, HGS is now strengthening its value proposition of applications to monitor and analyse ship performance for existing and new customers," Poli added.
Since its launch in March 2016, Fleet Xpress has been installed on board around 7,000 ships.
HGS has already signaled that it intends to extend its ship digitalization offering into the retrofit market, with discussions continuing with Inmarsat on options to provide a bundle of connectivity, certified hardware, and HGS s digital transformation services as a shipyard service package .

Maersk Growth Invests in German Trade Finance Startup
Maersk Growth, a corporate venture arm of Danish shipping giant Maersk, has decided to invest in European fintech company Modifi.
The new partnership will be kicked off today with a meeting in Copenhagen, as informed by Maersk.
Founded in November 2018, Modifi offers a trade finance platform for small and medium-sized buyers and sellers. It has developed a digital and automated underwriting model enabling lower operating costs and quicker access for customers to increased liquidity.
Maersk Growth and investor Global Founders Capital led a funding round of EUR 5.5 million (USD 6.2 million) for the expansion. Picus Capital completed the round alongside existing shareholders.
"We are delighted to have partners who are committed to solving trade finance for thousands of underserved small and medium-sized businesses. Winning Maersk as investors is the ultimate seal of approval for our mission of digitizing trade finance," Nelson Holzner, CEO and Co-founder, said.
"We are convinced that this partnership will provide plenty of opportunities for cooperation beyond the equity investment," he added.
"We are looking forward to partnering with Modifi and exploring synergies of collaboration to the benefit of current and future Maersk Trade Finance customers," Vipul Sardana, Maersk s Global Head of Trade Finance, commented.
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) contribute around 30% of global trade. Access to formal financial services is a worldwide problem and nearly 45% of SMEs list this as a major obstacle to trade. Half of the financing requests by SMEs are rejected by banks, resulting in a USD 1.5 trillion funding gap annually. Moreover, 60% of rejected trades collapse due to the lack of financing.
"The old ways of performing trade finance is still reliant on slow, paper-based and complex processes. Technology and digitalization will be a driving force in setting future standards by changing the legacy systems of doing risk assessment, and we believe Modifi has the right team and product to do so," Jeppe Hoier, Investment Partner at Maersk Growth, explained.
Since its launching, the company has opened offices in Amsterdam and now in India to further drive international expansion.

Ulstein Unveils X-Bow Design for RoPax Vessels
Norwegian shipbuilder and designer Ulstein has adapted and expanded its inverted bow design to include RoPax vessels.
Ulstein s X-Bow design is already in use in a number of different market segments, and is said to lead to improved seakeeping, and reduced speed loss and fuel consumption.
The company said it was adding RoPax designs to its portfolio as many of the vessels operate in harsh areas, for which the X-Bow was originally designed.
The seakeeping behavior of RoPax vessels is important to the integrity of the cargo. In many cases, the movements of a vessel call for a slow-down. This may in turn challenge the regular scheduling of a vessel. Ulstein noted that the X-Bow RoPax vessels would not need to slow down even in fairly rough weather, which would help to keep schedules. This has been proven in offshore vessels, according to the company, where more than 90 vessels are already in operation.
"RoPax is a segment in growth, where we will see fleet renewals in the years to come. We have for some time worked to integrate Ulstein s design mindset into a range of RoPax vessels. These vessels are all equipped with the X-Bow hull feature, a natural choice when operating in climatically rough conditions," Tore Ulstein, COO Design & Solutions, said.
One potential country for the ship construction is China, according to the company.
"More than half of the more than 100 Ulstein designs which have been built outside Norway, have been constructed in China with Ulstein site teams present. We have good relations to our Chinese partner yards and are currently in dialogue with several yards on the construction of these RoPax vessels," Ulstein concluded.

K Line to Cut Ship Emissions with Automated Power Kites
Japanese shipping giant K Line has signed a major agreement with France-based Airseas, a developer of automated power kites for ships, during Nor-Shipping 2019.
Under the 20-year deal signed on June 6, Airseas would install and service one ship with Seawing. Once the first kite is delivered, K Line would consider ordering up to 50 automated 1000 sqm kites based on parafoil technology to tow their commercial ships in order to save more than 20% fuel and CO2 emissions.
The deal was finalized after two years of close technical and business cooperation between the parties and is part of K Line’s strategy to comply with the International Maritime Organization s upcoming sulphur cap rule.
"Harnessing power from the wind is the cleanest and most competitive way to reduce CO2," K Line said.
Airseas technology reduces the environmental footprint of a Capesize vessel by 5,200 tons of CO2 per year depending on the vessel voyage route. This would help K Line achieve its goal to halve CO2 emissions by 2050.

Climate emissions cap challenges ship owners
Regulation limiting sulphur oxide emissions from 2020 is likely to be a game-changer for the shipping industry, with wide-ranging implications for cost, compliance and crew. It even brings the potential for an increase in the number of machinery damage claims and incidents, if not well-managed.
