Dutch freighter fire, Harlingen
Fire erupted in cargo hold of Dutch general cargo ship MARFAAM, berthed at Harlingen, Netherlands, in the evening Jul 9. Fire department was alerted, fire was said to be put under control in a short time. There was a lot of smoke, billowing from hold, understood all crew and dockers were evacuated. Major gas leak: bulk carrier suspect in breaking underwater pipeline
Underwater gas pipeline, operated by PT CNOOC Indonesia, broke up near Pulau Panjang Island, Banten Province, northwest of Jakarta, Indonesia, on Jul 9, and caused major gas leak, which made a big bubble on the surface. Navigation near gas leak site was restricted. As of morning Jul 10, restrictions are still valid, but it is not clear if gas leak was stopped, or stil goes on. Authorities suspect pipeline was ripped by anchor of one of the ships, anchored nearby. As of morning Jul 10, main suspect is Indonesia bulk carrier LUMOSO RAYA, closest to damaged pipeline. Investigation under way. Bulk carrier is loaded with coal.

MOL Joins Research on Advanced Navigation Support System
Japan s shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has unveiled a wide-ranging research partnership aimed at developing an advanced navigation support system.
The company said it jointly agreed on the project with MOL Techno-Trade, National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology, and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.

Pacific Carriers Tied to Tanker Order at STX
Singapore-based shipping firm Pacific Carriers Limited (PCL) has reportedly decided to expand its fleet by up to three new units.
According to data provided by Asiasis, the company placed on order for three crude oil product carriers in early July.

Irish Ferries Ulysses to Remain Out of Service
The technical issue concerning Irish Ferries ship Ulysses is more serious than originally anticipated, the company informed. The vessel is expected to be out of service for a further period of one to two weeks, the shipping group added.
Operated by Irish Continental Group s (ICG) subsidiary on the Dublin / Holyhead route, Ulysses reported technical difficulties with its Starboard Controllable Pitch Propeller on June 24.

Hapag-Lloyd Dismisses CMA CGM Merger Reports
Germany s shipping major Hapag-Lloyd has dismissed reports that its French counterpart CMA CGM proposed a merger between the parties. Reuters reported that CMA CGM, the world s third largest shipping firm, made an exploratory approach to Hapag-Lloyd over a possible merger. However, a Hapag-Lloyd spokesperson said that "there is no substance on these market rumors."

Tiny boat was hit by Thai bulk carrier and survived
Indian fiber fishing boat with 5 fishermen was allegedly, hit by passing merchant ship off Kochi, southwest India, at around 0030 LT Jul 8, in rough weather with heavy rain and strong wind. 2 fishermen were injured, boat remained afloat and under way, and safely reached its base. Merchant ship was identified as Thai bulk carrier MAYUREE NAREE, en route from Kandla to Paradip port, Bay of Bengal.

US Grants Security Clearance to COSCO s OOIL Deal
The US-based interagency committee has cleared COSCO Shipping Holdings proposed acquisition of Orient Overseas International Ltd (OOIL).
As informed by COSCO, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has determined that "there are no unresolved national security issues related to the transaction." This follows a national security agreement inked with the US government to divest Long Beach Container Terminal to an unrelated third party.

World Maritime Day 2019 to Focus on Women

Tallink Carried More Passengers in Second Quarter
Estonian shipping company Tallink Grupp transported 2.6 million passengers in the second quarter of 2018, up by 1.7 percent year over year.
In addition, the number of transported cargo units increased by 10.1 percent to 101,072 units and the number of passenger vehicles rose by 0.5 percent to 311,340 units when compared to Q2 2017.

Costamare Orders Five, Buys Two Containerships
Greek shipping company Costamare has ordered five newbuild boxships and agreed to buy two secondhand containerships. The new ships, each of about 12,690 TEU capacity, have been ordered from China s Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group.
As informed, the ship quintet is expected to be delivered between the second quarter of 2020 and the second quarter of 2021. Upon delivery, the vessels will commence a ten-year time charter to Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.

Tanger Med Port s Container Traffic Up 7% in First Half of 2018, Passenger Traffic Drops 13%
Morocco s Tanger Med Port has emerged as a productive North African shipping hub, as statistics reveal a 7 percent increase in container traffic for the first half of 2018.
The port s two terminals TC1 and TC2 processed 1,668,566 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) by the end of June, an increase of 7 percent, according to a statement from the port published by Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).

Pertamina discontinues LNG terminal project, seen as unfeasible
Indonesia s state owned energy holding company, Pertamina, has decided not to go ahead with what would have been the country s second land-based receiving terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG), its chief executive said on Monday.
Indonesia has forecast sharp increases in gas demand after 2020, but increases in domestic consumption of the super-cooled fuel have been hampered by an abundance of cheap coal and sluggish development of gas infrastructure.
