Dubai opens for crew changes.
DUBAI, a key hub for crew changeovers, has relaxed crew change restrictions, with the Dubai Maritime City Authority allowing moves under certain conditions.
According to DMCA, ships can rotate seafarers in Dubai port and anchorages subject to compliance with the Dubai Health Authority coronavirus guidelines and scheduled flights in United Arab Emirates.
"All agents are required to co-ordinate with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai Ports and Airports, and make sure the quick process of crew transfer from ships to airports and from airports to ships," the authority s Marine Anchorage Operations Department said.Posted On:16-Jul-2020

Containership Crew Rescues Sailors 825 Miles off Hawaii.
The crew aboard a U.S.-flagged containership rescued three sailors from a 50-foot trimaran that became disabled in the Pacific Ocean, about 825 miles northeast of Oahu, last week.
At 8 a.m., last Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders at Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) Honolulu received a report from a friend of the trimaran s master stating the vessel, Third Try, had not made contact since Monday. Fiji : WIMA Holds Workshop To Help Women Lead In Maritime Sector.
Fiji Women in Maritime Association (WIMA) is holding first strategic planning workshop on Saturday at Fiji Ports, Muaiwalu House in Walu Bay.
The workshop is on recognition, visibility and capacity building.

Ireland : Isle of Man Ship Registry launches seafarer welfare app.
The Isle of Man Ship Registry (IOM) is set to launch what it describes as the first ever seafarer welfare app designed by a ship registry.
IOM director Cameron Mitchell reports that the app is in the final stages of development, which has been accelerated on account of the pandemic, and is set go live later this month. Ferry fire, Kattegat.
Fire erupted in engine room of ferry PRINSESSE ISABELLA in the morning Jul 15, when she was on scheduled trip from Denmark mainland to Samso Island, Denmark, Kattegat. Turbocharger reportedly, caught fire, with a lot of smoke. Fire was extinguished by crew, the ship reached Samso and after inspection, was allowed to resume sailings. There was no risk of any kind to passengers who were on board, at the time of fire.

Seafarer repatriation - someone else s problem.
Maybe we shouldn t be surprised at the disappointing governmental attendance at the recent summit on crew changes.
The brutal truth is that in most countries, the situation of merchant seafarers and the crewing of their ships rarely will intrude into official consciousness. And if those weaving the red tape which prevents seafarers leaving and joining ships are backed into a corner they will probably suggest that it is not their problem, but that of the shipping industry for manning their vessels in such an inflexible construct.Posted On:16-Jul-2020

Maiden crew change off Vizhinjam Port.
The maiden outer anchorage crew change for ships off the Vizhinjam port took place on Wednesday, enabling 13 seafarers to sign off and 14 to sign on to Ever Globe, a 2.19-lakh tonnage container ship, sailing under the flag of Panama from Egypt to Colombo. The exercise began once the vessel reached three nautical miles within the Vizhinjam port at 6 a.m.

Crew kidnappings surge in seas off West Africa, IMB reports.
Violent attacks against ships and their crews have risen in 2020, with 77 seafarers taken hostage or kidnapped for ransom since January, reveals the ICC International Maritime Bureau s (IMB) latest piracy report.
The Gulf of Guinea off West Africa is increasingly dangerous for commercial shipping, accounting for just over 90% of maritime kidnappings worldwide. Meanwhile ship hijackings are at their lowest since 1993. In total, IMB s Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) recorded 98 incidents of piracy and armed robbery in the first half of 2020, up from 78 in Q2 2019.Posted On:16-Jul-2020
