Philippines : SAN Miguel Corporation comes to the rescue of stranded seafarers.
SAN Miguel Corporation (SMC) now turns its focus to extending help to maritime workers who have been stranded and currently camping out at the Manila North Harbor as they await clearance of returning to their provinces.
The firm will be providing free meals three times a day and financial assistance from its feeding center and food bank in nearby Tondo.
SMC president and chief operating officer Ramon S. Ang said that since June 29, volunteers at its Better World Tondo (BWT) have been preparing and delivering hot meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, to the stranded seamen.Posted On:2-Jul-2020

Fiji : Seafarers Connect Trade Dots From Overseas, Local Markets
Despite the Coronavirus pandemic seafarers are able to connect trade dots from overseas and local markets.
Such allows a young boy in the most remote island in Fiji get his ration of sugar and flour says Women in Maritime (Fiji) Association (WIMA) president Jane Koi.
Ms Koi made the statement last Thursday in Suva during the 2020 World Seafarers Day.

Freighter fire, Chittagong UPDATE ordered to leave port with fire still on
General cargo ship IZUMO reportedly caught fire at Chittagong port in the afternoon Jul 1, details unknown. The ship berthed at around 0345 UTC Jul 1. Several fire engines and a tug were deployed in firefighting. IZUMO unmoored at around 1300 UTC, sailed downstream under own power, left port area and as of 1430 UTC Jul 1 looked like she s going to anchor.Posted On:2-Jul-2020

German freighter collided with bridge in Rotterdam, lost containers.
An inland cargo ship loaded with containers struck Willemsbrug Bridge in Rotterdam at around midday Jul 1, and got stuck under the bridge. At least 3 containers fell into water, all reportedly empty. The bridge was slightly damaged, and closed for traffic. Unidentified cargo ship was berthed at Noordereiland. According to ships tracks, the ship in question is German inland cargo ship RHENUS DUISBURG (MMSI 211689390, GT 2900, built 2015).Posted On:2-Jul-2020

Seafarers Still Stranded At Sea - And More Test Positive.
Shipping groups and seafarer unions are desperately trying to convince governments to allow crew the right to transit after work contracts expire. Most governments still haven t listened. An estimated 200,000 crew remain stranded at sea, unable to get back to their homes after their initial work contracts expired.
It will be even harder to convince governments to allow seafarers passage through their ports and airports if more shipboard outbreaks occur. And while still relatively rare, new incidents are indeed emerging.
In the past two weeks, 15 of 28 crew aboard the tanker Minerva Oceania tested positive, as did 10 of the 23 crew on the container ship Maersk Idaho.Posted On:2-Jul-2020

Cases of suicide at sea leap as details of key crew change summit emerge.
July 9 is the date for the UK-convened summit on crew changes, which will engage stakeholders from across the world, including maritime, aviation, regulators and politicians. A solution to the crew repatriation crisis cannot come soon enough with news from British charity, the Seafarers Hospital Society, that suicides have become the number one source of deaths onboard ships in recent months.
"The mental health of seafarers has been in the spotlight in recent weeks with a number of reported suicides and suicide attempts on board ships stranded offshore or in port. It s now the foremost cause of deaths amongst seafarers," the charity warned in a recent release.
The Seafarers Hospital Society is now headed by Sandra Welch, previously the COO at the Sailors Society.Posted On:2-Jul-2020
