Last Of 2 Kidnapped Seafarers From Tanker Vessel Return To India.
After almost 3 weeks, the last 2 seafarers who had been captured during the hijacking of an oil tanker returned to India.
The tanker, named MT Gulf Sky, had been hijacked on July 5, as per UN reports. The hijackers told the seafarers to steer the ship for the Iranian mainland.
After the hijackers brought the ship to the port of Bandar Abbas, most of the crew members had been brought back to India. Only 2 seafarers- namely the Chief Engineer and another crewmember remained in Tehran, due to the absence of their passports.Posted On:28-Jul-2020

Chinese ship capsizes off Penghu; four dead, another four missing.
A Chinese gravel ship capsized Sunday night off the coast of the Taiwan-held Penghu Islands, leaving at least four of its crew members dead, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said Monday.
Taiwan s Coast Guard searched for crew members in waters where the vessel capsized, and as of Monday noon, one crew member had been rescued, four had been found dead and another four were still missing, the CGA said.Posted On:28-Jul-2020

Cyprus shipping struggles to survive crew-change crisis.
Since the coronavirus crisis began, as many as 1 in 6 of the 1 million crew on 60,000 cargo ships at sea have been marooned. Large numbers have been stuck on ships, long after their contracts have run out. Others are stuck at home.

Intercargo: Crew Change Dilemma is "Reaching Farcical Proportions".
As efforts to resume crew change proceed in fits and starts in ports around the world, bulker trade association Intercargo raised a warning Monday that the situation is becoming untenable for seafarers and shipowners.
According to the association, the main obstacles for crew change are 1) finding commercial air travel between the crew source countries and port states; and 2) a lack of commitment from port states health and immigration authorities to facilitate seafarer travel.Posted On:28-Jul-2020

Malaysia : SOP for exchange of ship crew members tightened to prevent spread of Covid-19.
The government today decided to tighten the standard operating procedures (SOP) for ship crew members signing-on and signing-off process to prevent the spread of Covid-19, especially to the locals.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said crew members scheduled to undergo the Signing-On process are now required to undergo Covid-19 swab test upon arrival at Malaysia s international port.Posted On:28-Jul-2020

Crew change crisis all at sea in search of a global solution.
SEAFARERS working for medium-sized or small companies may find themselves staying on board for months after their contracts expire, given that the crew change crisis shows no signs of being resolved any time soon.
Those companies with global networks and deep pockets are starting to find ways round the situation, even if that means chartering planes or using the company jet to fly seafarers home when no commercial airline services are available, having already determined which ports are the most amenable for crew changes in the current circumstances.
