”K” Line Fixes Two LNG Carriers
”K” Line LNG Shipping (UK) Limited (K-LNG), a subsidiary of Japanese Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (”K” Line), has through the joint-venture consortium with Chandris (Hellas) Inc. entered into long-term time charter contracts with the BP group for two LNG carrier newbuildings.

The vessels, which will have a capacity of 173,400m3, will be constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea.

The delivery of the vessels is scheduled for 2018. It is expected that the carriers will primarily be engaged in the transportation of LNG from the Freeport LNG project in Texas, USA.

K-LNG is working as a ship manager, owner and regional agent for ”K” Line’s business activities within Europe, and the wider Atlantic region, namely in the marine transportation of LNG.

With the addition of these two vessels, K-LNG will manage a fleet of 10 LNG carriers.

Spotted: Two Cruise Beauties Meet in Dubrovnik
In today’s spotted we caught on camera two cruise ships enjoying the Mediterranean sun in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The duo in question is 2014-built Mein Schiff 3, owned by Germany cruise liner TUI Cruises and Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam, built in 2010. The two cruise ships are resting at berth, while their passengers are exploring the historic city, often referred to as the pearl of the Adriatic.

Dubrovnik is a well-preserved example of a late-medieval walled city, which joined UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.

For all those who are preparing for a vacation on a cruise this year or those who might be thinking about it, here are some photos of the two beauties to make your day.

Port of Houston Authority Terminals Nearing 20 Million Ton Mark
The Port of Houston Authority terminals handled nearly 20 million tons of cargo since the first of this year through June.

The Port of Houston Authority Executive Director Roger Guenther identified loaded container units and steel imports as the key performance drivers responsible for the growth in cargo.

Year to date through June, the Port Authority’s Barbours Cut and Bayport Container Terminals showed a 20 percent increase in loaded container units. The general cargo terminals showed a robust 26 percent growth in import steel tonnage during this same period.

“Business has reached its highest levels across several key business lines during recent years,” Guenther said in his report to the Port Commission. “And, we must continue to strategically plan for the future opportunities.”

Guenther also reported that the Port Authority assumed full operations of the Maersk terminal Monday, July 27, as part of a mutually agreed lease termination authorized by the Port Commission in May.

Now with capacity to operate the entire terminal property, the Port Authority can distribute container volumes more evenly between its two container handling facilities. Maersk Line, and its affiliated shipping services, SeaLand and Safmarine, will continue to call at the Port of Houston Authority terminals as common carriers.

Centre eyes developing a port in Bangladesh
After committing to develop Chabahar port in Iran, India Government has set its eyes on developing the Payra port in Bangladesh. Building foreign ports is part of a new manoeuvre, for thwarting China’s growing influence in the region.

The Payra port is located in Patuakhali district of Southern Bangladesh, on the Bay of Bengal. Over $ 3 billion investment would be required for the port project. HR Wallingford, a UK based marine consultancy company, has been mandated to prepare a master plan for the port development.

A senior Shipping ministry official told BusinessLine after Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi’s early June visit to Bangladesh, initial studies have been commenced for Payra port in the ministry. The Bangladeshi officials are likely to submit the port survey data and technical studies by September or October. The decision to develop the port is based on strategic considerations and not economic ones, the official said.

It has a potential to be developed into a deep-water port handling large vessels but the perennial silt from the local rivers is a cause of worry.

The official said that Bangladesh has Chittagong and Mongla ports but Chittagong sufferers due to excessive traffic and shallow draft. The Mongla has problems of inadequate road and rail connectivity,

Therefore Payra is seen as way out this logjam. Since independence in 1971, Bangladesh has not built a new port and desperately wants to build one, as it has a booming export oriented garment export industry. The port will also be able to get a lot of container traffic bound for the North-East region of India, the official said.

The official pointed that previous government lacked a doctrine and a strategy for developing ports in other countries. A number of East African countries including Malawi had approached UPA government for port development in their countries but such opportunities were ignored. Under Modi Government port related developments in East Africa would be given a priority, for which an international conference would be held in September.

New freight route will connect Port of Liverpool with Greenock, Belfast and Rotterdam
Peel Ports has signed a deal with shipping operator BG Freight Line for a new freight service connecting Greenock, Belfast and Rotterdam with the Port of Liverpool’s £300m Liverpool2 terminal.

The route will open up global opportunities for Scottish exporters, particularly in the food and drink, chemical and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Liverpool2 is due to become operational by the end of the year and will be equipped to handle 95% of the world’s biggest cargo ships.

Peel believes the facility could revolutionise the UK logistics market by handling much of the imported freight that currently comes in through south coast ports.

Vessels on the new routre will call at the Port of Liverpool on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday each week.

Currently Liverpool handles 45% of the UK’s total transatlantic trade so the new shipping route will give Scottish firms direct access to the UK’s main trade hub with North America.

The US is Scotland’s number one export market accounting for £3.9bn of exports in 2013.

Scotland has ambitious aims for exports. In 2010 the Scottish Government announced plans to increase exports to international markets by 50% by 2017 from £22.81bn to £33.4bn.

Koert Luitwieler, chief executive of BG Freight Line, said: “The combination of our port network, our existing feeder services, and this new route allows us to provide international traders with a way to minimise costs, carbon emissions and congestion.

“As well as helping to meet increasing demand now, the extra option we can now offer importers and exporters will complement the Liverpool2 container terminal that will open in December this year.”

Global drinks company Diageo is one of the first producers to take advantage of the service.

Port of Singapore launches first Request For Proposal for LNG bunker supplier licence
The Port of Singapore launched today its first Request for Proposal (RFP) for interested parties to apply for the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunker supplier licence, which would allow the licencee to supply LNG bunker to vessels in the Port of Singapore. In their submissions to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), applicants are to propose an end-to-end LNG bunkering supply solution that details, amongst other things, their bunkering supply and delivery model, LNG sources and marketing plans for the sale of LNG to customers in the Port of Singapore.

As part of efforts to develop LNG bunkering, MPA has been collaborating closely with partner agencies, industry stakeholders and technical experts, to develop LNG bunkering standards, procedures and facilities. Last year, MPA announced commencing work on a pilot programme with interested parties of the LNG bunker supply chain to establish operation protocols for LNG bunkering. MPA will also provide funding of up to S$2 million per vessel for up to six LNG-fuelled vessels for the pilot programme.

Successful applicants of the RFP are expected to supply LNG bunker to support the LNG bunkering Pilot Programme that is scheduled to commence in early 2017.

The bunkering industry is an important and integral part of Singapore s global hub port. With more than 42 million tonnes of bunker sales last year as the world s top bunkering port, Singapore plays a key role in powering world shipping and promoting the use of cleaner fuels for ship bunkering.

Mozambique port accident deals blow to Vale coal project: sources
A coal stacker has collapsed at the Mozambique port of Nacala, dealing a blow to Brazilian miner Vale s effort to start coal shipments from the African nation in the third quarter, sources told Reuters.

The giant piece of machinery, which is used to handle coal and other bulk materials, buckled last week, according to a mining industry source with knowledge of the situation.

"The contractors are investigating and an official report is expected within a couple of weeks," the source said, adding that no one was hurt in the accident.

Another source said it could take months to fix the equipment.

In an emailed statement Vale confirmed that the coal stacker, which was in the final stages of construction, collapsed last week. A team is studying the cause of the accident, the company said.

Vale is reliant on the port and connecting railway, together known as the Nacala Corridor, to reach capacity at its Moatize coal mine in northwest Mozambique.

Vale expects Moatize s production to reach 11 million tonnes of coal per year by mid-2016 and 22 million tonnes by 2017. Current output is around 7 million tonnes.

A third source said Vale had been experiencing problems with its wash plant at the mine site, an issue that could see it miss its production target for this year. In its statement Vale said the outage was due to scheduled maintenance and that processes were working normally.

Shanghai port makes progress on building up cold ironing facilities
The Chinese port of Shanghai has made progress with plans to build up shoreside power for ocean-going ships and cruise ships while they are at berth so as to reduce the release of harmful air emissions.

Shanghai Municipal Development & Reform Commission (SHDRC) issued a statement late last week saying that the government of Shanghai city has outlined the incentives to encourage shoreside power using electricity, or cold ironing.

Some of the incentives proposed include subsidising of construction fees, setting minimum usage requirements for ships plugging to the electricity, subsidising the power costs for users, and ensuring affordable costs in accordance to international oil prices.

“According to a survey by the local authorities, international shipping at Shanghai port, especially those at berth, is the main contributor to harmful air emissions, accounting for 90% of the emissions,” a statement from SHDRC said.

“The use of shoreside power is expected to reduce emissions of NOX by 99%, while particulate matter emissions would only be at 3-17% compared to the use of auxiliary engines,” the statement said.

The burning of high-sulphur bunker fuel by ships while at berth is particularly hazardous as the smog is released near to the heavily populated city.

At present, the Yangshan Guandong Terminal and Wusongkou Cruise Terminal have started construction works on the shoreside electricity power facilities. Ocean-going vessels can expect to be able to tap on shoreside power while at berth within this year.
