Wage cuts to preserve jobs mulled; seafarers special lane launched
Acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Chua on Thursday said negotiating temporary wage reduction was needed to preserve more jobs amid the pandemic downturn.
During the virtual hearing of the House Committee on Economic Affairs, Chua said the temporary cut in wages was among the immediate steps toward the road to recovery to prevent layoffs and retrenchments as the country gradually reopens its economy.
"To keep as many jobs as much as possible and this temporary wage reduction that is consensual I think is the immediate step that we can take," he said.
"Over the long term or the medium term, we know the economy is changing and we cannot keep the same jobs if they are not going to be jobs that are the most efficient and compliant to the new normal so we will have to think about preserving employment and not a particular job," he added.Posted On:4-Jul-2020

Seafarers UK Calls for Better Tracking of Seafarer Suicides.
On Friday, the maritime welfare charity Seafarers UK called for better reporting on the rate of suicide at sea. According to the charity, the many recent reports of deaths involving seafarers stranded by the coronavirus shutdown demonstrate the longstanding shortage of reliable information about suicide on board.
With most crew changes halted due to coronavirus restrictions, thousands of seafarers are compelled to work beyond their contract end dates and have been denied access to seaports around the world. As a result, many seafarers’ medical conditions are going untreated, ship visits by port chaplains and welfare workers are severely restricted, and access to free communication with families and friends is often infrequent, Seafarers UK said.Posted On:4-Jul-2020

Singaporean freighter attacked, 5 crew kidnapped, Nigeria.
Cargo ship was attacked at night Jul 2 W of Warri, Nigeria, Gulf of Guinea, by armed pirates. They boarded the ship and kidnapped 5 crew, all of Chinese nationality. The ship was identified by Dryad Intl as KOTA BUDI, Singapore-flagged and managed general cargo ship. She left Warri on Jun 23 and was cruising in loops near attack position from Jun 24 until Jul 2, destination unknown, probably waiting for orders. After attack KOTA BUDI steamed south, in the morning Jul 3 stopped moving, was still adrift as of 1300 UTC Jul 3.

Djibouti ramps up efforts to get seafarers stranded by coronavirus off ships.
Djibouti has carried out the first crew change of merchant sailors in its territory and is ready to get home more seafarers who have been stranded by the coronavirus, a senior port official said.
Lying on the Bab al-Mandab strait, which is one of the world s busiest shipping chokepoints, Djibouti is a critical transit hub. More than 2,500 ships transit and call at its ports annually.

80% believe bulk carriers operate with lower safety than tankers.
The Bulk Carrier Leaders webinar on 25 June looked at where the dry bulk market is today and at issues surrounding safety standards. A poll among webinar participants revealed there is an issue with safety standards in the dry bulk sector: more than 80% of webinar participants believe bulk carriers operate at lower safety standards than tankers: Higher: 2%,The same: 19%, Slightly lower: 55%, Significantly lower: 25%.
The webinar explored this issue, but first, MSI dry bulk analyst Will Tooth took the panel and attendees through the fundamentals in the dry bulk market to set the scene to the current background. The dry bulk market suffered in Q1 2020 and Mr Tooth told webinar attendees that the outlook for the remainder of 2020 remains poor with bulker levels falling to their lowest levels since 2016.
