India, Maldives Sign MoU for Passenger and Cargo Services
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between India and the Maldives for the establishment of passenger and cargo services by sea, has received approval from The Union Council of Ministers of India.
Under the deal, signed on June 8, 2019, the parties are set to explore a proposed ferry service with a view to harness the potential opportunity that lies in passenger and cargo transportation by sea between the two countries.
India said that the service would contribute "in a big way to promote people to people contact and to boost bilateral trade."
India has provided USD 100 million stand-by credit facility (SCF) to Maldives, including long-term loans and revolving credit for trade.
Male, the capital and most populous city and Kulhudhuffushi, the third most populous city of Maldives are good prospects for introduction of ferry service from Kochi for both tourists as well as cargo.

Carnival Victory Crewmember Falls Overboard off Cuba
A search operation has been launched for a 37-year-old man who fell overboard from the cruise ship Carnival Victory.
The incident occurred on July 4 while the vessel was some 30 miles northwest of Cuba, according to the details provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received a report from the Carnival Victory that the crewmember was seen going overboard.
Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Charles Sexton (WPC-1108) crew to search.
At the time, the ship was sailing back to Miami from Cozumel.

Hapag-Lloyd Introduces Global Vessel Risk Surcharge for Arabian Gulf Cargo
German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has decided to implement a vessel risk surcharge (VRS) following recent maritime incidents in the Gulf of Oman.
The company said that operating costs for its services have increased in the Middle East Gulf region as a result of tanker attacks that took place in the Strait of Hormuz.
As of July 15, 2019, the surcharge of USD 42 per TEU will be introduced for cargo from/to and via Arabian Gulf - Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia Eastern Province Ports Dammam & Jubail and the UAE.
Depending on risk situation, the company may add additional countries as well as consider increase or mitigation of abovementioned surcharge.
In addition, for cargo from China, the surcharge will be valid as of August 1, 2019.
For FMC related cargo to/from USA and Canada, the implementation date will be announced soon, according to Hapag-Lloyd.
Earlier this week, another container shipping major, Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), announced plans to implement a war risk surcharge for all cargoes moving to/from the Arabian Gulf.

Chinese container ship caught in storm, sank
Chinese coastal container ship MEI CHENG 866 left Qinzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Region, China, Gulf of Tonkin, at about midnight Jul 3, the ship encountered rough weather early in the morning Jul 4 and tried to shelter off the coast, SW of Qinzhou. She was pushed aground, after probably, anchor drag, at around 0200 Beijing time Jul 4. Tug and SAR boats were sent to assist.

Chinese cargo ship hit rocks, 13 crew evacuated
General cargo ship RONG HAI 79 ran aground on rocks N of Nanri island, Fujian Province, China, East China sea, in the afternoon Jul 4. The ship is in ballast, it isn t clear if she s or was in danger of sinking, but 13 crew decided to leave her, and went into life boat and rafts, see photos. All were rescued by East China Sea Rescue Bureau SAR ships.

VesselsValue: Newbuild Orders See Record Decline
Global ship newbuilding orders dropped to record lows in the second quarter of 2019, VesselsValue said.
Bulker newbuild orders were down 73% for the first half of 2019, compared to the same period in 2018, according to VesselsValue s Head Cargo Analyst, Olivia Watkins.

Belships Issues New Shares to Wrap Up Bulker Acquisition
Norwegian shipping company Belships ASA has issued new Belships shares to two European companies to complete the acquisition of a 63,000 dwt bulker.
In April this year, Belships entered into an agreement to buy the Ultramax vessel M/V Sofie Victory.

Port Klang turns to online solutions for efficient container lorry management
The Port Klang Authority (PKA) has turned to online solutions to reduce the number of container lorries on the road, as well as to improve service efficiency.
The solutions, known as the Cargomove System and Linkhaul System, are the result of the collaboration between PKA, Northport, Westports and two private companies.
