US : New Bill Aims to Secure Grant Funding for Maritime Training.
A new bill introduced in the U.S. aims to make available $200 million in grant funding for community and technical colleges offering training programs for maritime industry professions.
The legislation H.R. 7456 was introduced by Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (Texas-29) alongside Rep. Don Young (Alaska-At-Large), Rep. Anthony G. Brown (Md.-04), Rep. Brian Babin (Texas-36), and Rep. Steven Palazzo (Miss.-04).
"Maritime industry jobs are a critical part of our nations economy. Yet research has shown that there may soon be a shortage of maritime industry workers," said Congresswoman Garcia.Posted On:7-Jul-2020

Offshore supply ship damaged by fire, North sea
Offshore supply ship WILSON ARCTIC suffered fire in engine room, which started at around 1300 UTC Jul 6 in North sea, N of Domburg, Zeeland, Netherlands. The ship was en route from Vlissingen to BORSELLE2 (offshore wind farm). Crew reportedly, managed to extinguish fire by own means, but the ship suffered damages and had to interrupt voyage and turn back. KNRM boats assisted and escorted damages WILSON ARCTIC, while she limped back at Vlissingen at a reduced speed. As of 1800 UTC, she was approaching Vlissingen.Posted On:7-Jul-2020

Netherlands : 250,000 maritime workers stranded by coronavirus and visa rules.
The Dutch government has been urged to ease visa restrictions for maritime workers to allow 250,000 stranded seamen to go home, the NRC reports. The international trade organisation for shipowners and operators, ICA, said there were growing concerns about the safety and mental health of seamen stuck on merchant ships in major international ports such as Rotterdam since the start of the coronavirus outbreak. ICA chief Guy Platten said in a letter to junior justice minister Ankie Broekers-Knol that the Netherlands should use its influence as a major shipping and transport hub to secure an easing of visa restrictions.Posted On:7-Jul-2020

Cocaine and Two Stevedores Discovered in Container on Maersk Boxship.
Mexican authorities are reporting the seizure of more than $1 million worth of cocaine along with two individuals when the Maersk Line container ship Svendborg Maersk arrived at the port of Manzanillo in the Colima region of Mexico. Local officals said that it was unusual to find individauls hidden in the container working as guards on the shipment.
An inspection of the Svendborg Maersk carried out by the port in cooperation with the Mexican Navy, the Manzanillo customs and attorney general s office, discovered two men who were not crew members along with two packages that did not correspond to the ship’s manifest concealed in a container aboard the ship.Posted On:7-Jul-2020

IMO urges seafarers be granted access to medical care onshore.
International Maritime Organization (IMO) secretary-general Kitack Lim has endorsed a series of recommendations designed to ensure seafarers can quickly and safely access medical care ashore.
The Recommendations for port and coastal States on the prompt disembarkation of seafarers for medical care ashore during the Covid-19 pandemic have been developed by a broad cross section of global industry associations together with the IMO.
