Ferry grounding, Sunda Strait
Ferry JWS ran aground at around 1600 LT (UTC +7) Jul 8 at or near Bakauheni port, Sumatra, Sunda Strait, while approaching port. Reportedly, there was one truck on board, and one passenger, driver. No injures, no leaks reported. According to local updates, the ship was refloated same day. Ship s AIS is off since May this year.

39 ships engulfed in fire storm at Bali harbor
39 fishing vessels were engulfed in fire early in the morning Jul 9 at Benoa harbor, southernmost Bali island, Indonesia. As of afternoon Jul 9, at least 25 vessels and boats were still burning. Cause of fire according to officials, is yet unknown, but locals mention explosion heard, prior to fire storm. Firefighters are trying to tackle fire storm, but it looks like there s not much they can do, except preventing fire from spreading, until the ships burn out.

Epic Gas Secures Refinancing for Five LPG Carriers
Singapore-based gas carrier owner Epic Gas has completed the refinancing of a further five LPG carriers in partnership with Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank. The new USD 34 million facility has a term of five years, and has allowed the company to reduce its margin by 85 bps.

Star Bulk Closes Acquisition of 15 Songa Bulk Ships
Greece-based dry bulk shipping firm Star Bulk Carriers has closed the acquisition of 15 dry bulk vessels from Norwegian shipowner Songa Bulk.
The ships were acquired for an aggregate of 13.725 million common shares of Star Bulk and USD 145 million in cash.
Following the closing of the transaction, the company said that Arne Blystad will be appointed to the Board of Directors of Star Bulk as Class C Director and Herman Billung will join the management team of Star Bulk as Senior Vice President.

Van Oord Gets Marine Works Contract for Anaklia Deep Sea Port
Georgian Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) has awarded the early dredging and reclamation works for the Phase 1 Anaklia Deep Sea Port project to Dutch marine engineering company Van Oord.
"This is a historical moment since Georgia has never witnessed marine works of this kind taking into consideration its scale and engineering solutions that are related to conduct reclamation activities," Ronny Solberg, CEO of Anaklia Construction Management team, commented.

Cargo ship struck boat on River Don, Russian Inner Waterways
General cargo ship BEREZOVETS struck boat Kseniya by stern moving astern, while leaving Obukhovskiy Sip Repair Yard, Azov, Russia, in the afternoon Jul 6. Boat sustained a breach above waterline, remained afloat. BEREZOVETS was taken back to Yard and left Yard in the morning Jul 7, sailing to Azov port, where she was berthed. No information on ship s damages, if any. Collision was caused by Master s mistake in handling the ship.

Ferry collided with pier, 40 passengers injured
Ferry with 94 people on board, including passengers and crew, and vehicles, collided with pier at Shinan, South Jeolla Province, Korea, Yellow sea, at around 1100 Seoul time Jul 7. Some 40 passengers were injured by a jolt. According to available information, ferry in question is SINAN NONGHYUB FERRY NO. 7. The ship sustained some damages, but seems to sail to Mokpo under own power.

Turkish tanker troubled in Barents sea, Russia
Product tanker STONE 1 reportedly encountered mechanical problem with threat of possible power loss during loading operation at floating oil pipe reducer off Kolguyev Island east coast, Barents sea, Russia, on Jul 6 or Jul 7. Tug ATRIYA (IMO 8724107) was sent to assist. Tug was giving to tanker towing line when towline snapped and fouled tug s propeller and rudder. By Jul 8 tug was under way again, it is said that tanker is also operative in all respects, though it is not clear what exactly does it mean. Tanker doesn t need towage any more, or tanker ready for towage?

Crimean railway ferry hull cracked, breached
Loud noise of tearing steel alerted the crew of rail ferry ANNENKOV when stern-berthed ship was offloading rail cars in Kerch port, Crimea, on Jul 8. The hull rifted along all the length of 164 bulkhead, not less than 10 tear holes were found, with ensuing water ingress into engine room. Ferry s stern started to submerge, but thanks preventive measures, pumping out water and sealing of underwater holes, ferry was stabilized. Ferry is maintaining railway link between annexed Crimea, Ukraine, and mainland Russia, across Kerch Strait.

Two 11,000 TEU Newbuildings Delivered to HMM
Hanjin Subic has delivered two mega containership newbuildings to South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine s (HMM). The two 11,000 TEU sister ships, HMM Blessing and HMM Promise, were handed over to their owner on June 26 and 30, respectively.
Originally ordered by Greek-based Oceanbulk Container Carriers in 2014, the ships were transferred to HMM as part of a resale transaction in 2017, according to data provided by VesselsValue.

The Beast Is Testing Material Fatigue to Improve Future Vessels
Mirek Kaminski wants to improve the design method used for ships. "We want to make vessels more sustainable, more effective and more affordable."
Kaminski is professor of ship and offshore structures in the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology at Delft University of Technology and he wants to do this by studying material fatigue. The professor created the beast , a hexapod weighing about 60 tonnes. This machine will test pieces of vessels.

PNG launches joint maritime training programs with China
PAPUA New Guinea s largest privately owned maritime college is now connected with China s fourth largest maritime institution aimed at improving capacity of seafarers in PNG and the Pacific Islands to international levels.
Last week Pacific Maritime Training College launched a joint training co-operation between the Zhejiang International Maritime College of China, with its training programs and development agenda aimed at training PNG Maritime students who wish to advance their qualifications and great opportunities for PNG (and other Pacific Island) seafarers to find employment in the international maritime industry.

South Korea suspends Iranian oil loading in July for first time since 2012 - sources
South Korea will not lift any Iranian crude and condensate in July, halting all shipments for the first time in six years amid U.S. pressure to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November, three sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.
Japanese customers, however, are continuing to import for now, with multiple buyers considering buying Iranian oil through September loading, said a North Asia trading source familiar with Iranian oil shipping arrangements.

Tanzania: Container Handling to Rise By 20% This Year - TICTS
The Tanzania International Container Terminal Services Ltd (TICTS) projects to increase the number of containers it will handle by 20 per cent this year. During 2017, the company handled 500,000 containers. About 45 per cent of the cargoes were in transit to the landlocked countries.

Maharashtra to get two new dry ports
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust plans to commission two dry ports at Wardha and Jalna in Maharashtra by June 2019. The Jalna port will come up close to Aurangabad, with an annual capacity of 20,000 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The Wardha dry port will come up near Nagpur, with another 20,000 TEU annual capacity. Around ₹400 crore will be spent on each of the ports. JNPT has also decided to start similar dry ports in Nashik and Sangli.
