Maran Gas Places Order for Its 6th LNG Carrier at DSME
South Korea s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has secured another LNG carrier order from Maran Gas Maritime, part of Angelicoussis Shipping Group.
Under the deal, revealed on August 22, the shipbuilder would construct the 174,000 cbm unit at its Geoje Okpo Shipyard. The new vessel is scheduled for delivery by the fourth quarter of 2021.
Maran Gas has so far this year ordered six LNG carriers from DSME, and the parties are in discussions for further units.
The latest ship will feature advanced partial re-liquefaction system (A-PRS), developed by DSME.
The shipbuilder s 2019 orderbook currently stands at around USD 3 billion and includes 17 vessels, seven of which are LNG carriers. Other units on order include seven ultra-large crude oil carriers and three submarines.

Alphaliner: HMM to Add 34 Ships to THE Alliance s Network in 2020
South Korean container shipping major Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) is expected to add some 34 ships to THE Alliance s network in 2020, according to data provided by Alphaliner.
Citing deployment plans revealed earlier by HMM, the shipping analyst said that the company would add up to 519,000 TEU to the network once it joins THE Alliance as a full member on April 1, 2020.
Although the alliance members have not yet disclosed their new network plans for the next year, Alphaliner noted that the Korean carrier s ships are expected to be deployed on the following routes:
- Asia - North Europe route, where twelve 23,000 TEU newbuildings are scheduled for deployment from the second quarter of 2020;
- Asia - Med or Asia - US East Coast route would feature ten of the company s 13,000 TEU ships, including three vessels currently chartered out to the 2M alliance;
- Asia - Pacific Southwest (USWC) route, where HMM would send six 10,000 TEU units, all of which are currently chartered out to the 2M;
- Asia - Pacific Northwest (USWC) route, where the company would deploy eight of its 8,600 TEU vessels.
Additionally, another eight HMM 15,000 TEU newbuildings are expected to be deployed on the Asia - US East Coast route from the second quarter of 2021.
Alphaliner further said that HMM is expected to cooperate with THE Alliance partners on the Far East - Middle East routes, although its participation in the trade is to be downgraded from the 13,000 TEU scale to tonnage of 5,000 to 6,600 TEU.
Apart from the newbuildings that the South Korean major would receive in 2020 and 2021, its fleet will be strengthened in April 2020 by redeliveries of nine 10,000 - 13,000 TEU ships currently (sub-)chartered out to Maersk and MSC.
The charters were among the conditions set for the 2M-HMM agreement that was signed in March 2017. It resulted in the withdrawal of HMM tonnage from the Far East - North Europe, Far East - Med and Far East - USEC routes.
The new arrangement with THE Alliance will allow HMM ships to return to the Far East - Med and Far East - USEC routes. At the same time, the carrier will be able to gradually replace the 5,000 TEU classic panamax ships that it started to send onto the Far East - North Europe route in 2018, with 23,000 TEU giants as of April 2020.

Global Ports Holding Vying for Puerto Rico Cruise Port
London-listed port operator Global Ports Holding (GPH) has submitted a bid for concession rights to a cruise ship dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The company is one of three entities competing to be downselected for the refurbishment, operation and maintenance of a number of piers under a public-private arrangement structure.
The tender includes Piers 1, 3, 4, Piers 11 through 14 in San Juan, and Pan American Piers I and II in Isla Grande.
The other two bidders are Puerto Rico Cruise Terminals Partners and San Juan Cruise Terminals Partners, a Puerto Rico Port Authority spokesperson confirmed to World Maritime News.
Some of the piers would require a total rebuild while others would necessitate only minor refurbishment.
A final decision on the choice of the partner is expected to be made by the end of the month, according to Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) executive director, Anthony Maceira Zayas.
GPH is seeking to expand its foothold in the region after previously landing a 25-year concession for the Prince George Wharf and related areas, at Nassau cruise port, in the Bahamas, and a 30-year deal with Antigua and Barbuda for cruise port operations in Antigua. In 2018, GPH signed a 15-year management agreement with the Cuban company Aries S.A. for the operation of the cruise port in Havana, Cuba.
The company increased its first-half 2019 revenue from cruise operations by 6.6 percent year on year. In the first six months of the year, GPH reported USD 23.9 million in cruise revenue compared to the USD 22.4 million in the first half of 2018.
Total consolidated revenues were USD 54.6 million, down 3.4 percent year on year, while the operating profit plunged by over 80 percent, from the USD 6.5 million in the first half of 2018 to USD 1.3 million for this year.
"We have seen another record performance from our cruise business in the first half of the year, with strong growth in passenger volumes translating into strong growth in cruise EBITDA," Emre Sayin, CEO, said.
"Our commercial ports are not immune to macro-economic factors and as a result recent trading has been challenging. Our previous experience suggests that the trading performance will improve over time and we continue to work to diversify the revenue streams at our commercial ports."
"We expect to deliver low single digit growth in organic EBITDA for the full year."

GriegMaas Welcomes Latest Ultramax to Its Fleet
New dry bulk joint venture GriegMaas has expanded its fleet with the Ultramax vessel Star Damon.
Formerly known as GH Frankel, the 2012-built Star Damon is one of two vessels the joint venture, formed between shipping company Grieg Star and investment management firm Maas Capital in December 2018, bought this year from Celsius Shipping.
The second vessel, GH Rough Habit, was acquired for a reported price of USD 16.6 million. It is yet to be delivered.
With the latest arrival, the GriegMaas fleet of bulkers consists of three Ultramax and two Supramax ships, all built by China s Yangzhou Dayang Shipbuilding.
According to Grieg Star, the 63,500 dwt Star Damon will join the G2 Ocean conventional bulk pool. The G2 Ocean is a joint venture of Grieg Star and Gearbulk established in April 2017.
A day after receiving Star Damon, Grieg Star sent off one of its Handymax oldies, the Star Fuji, for recycling. The 34-year-old ship landed at Leyal Ship Recycling in Aliaga, near Izmir in Turkey, the same recycling yard that recycled Star Gran in February.
