Stranded Russian bulk carrier under tow to shelter
Spanish maritime authorities decided to shelter Russian bulk carrier ZAPOLYARYE, stranded on Ceuta anchorage for some 2.5 months due to debt-ridden owner insolvency, at Motril port, Spanish Alboran sea coast. The ship was taken on tow by SAR tug LUZ DE MAR (IMO 9320104) in the evening Sep 18, ETA Motril Sep 19. Official said the ship s fuel is down to some 6 tons, not enough in case of emergency, if rough weather strikes bulk carrier on Ceuta s outer anchorage. How justifiable is the decision to tow the ship across sea instead of for example, supply her with fuel her at anchorage, is anyone s guess. Somebody will have to pay for towage, whatever the outcome of Murmansk Shipping Company s woes.
