| Increase in the number of attempts for BES Exit Ex |
Directorate General of Shipping has approved that Exit examinations for BSE will be conducted at the end of the course and then after three months at a re-sit. If candidates fail to pass out the BSE Exam in the earlier allowed three attempts, four more attempts would be allowed to clear the BES Exit Exams.

| DG’s notice to Ship-owners, Ship Operators and Cla |
The Directorate General of Shipping has decided to to implement the amended provisions of the 88 Protocol relating to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, with immediate effect. So, all Indian ships should undergo two inspections of the outside of the ship’s bottom during the validity of the Cargo Ship Safety Construction Certificate or the Cargo Ship Construction Certificate or the Cargo Ship Safety Certificate, as the case may be, and the period between any two such inspections shall not exceed 36 months.

| Procedure for obtaining replacement COP for SSOs |
The officers holding DGS Approved Ship Security Officers Certificate issued before 31st December, 2007 may request for DGS approved Certificate of Proficiency for Ship Security Officer in the STCW format from the DGS Approved Maritime Training Institute that had issued the Certificate earlier, either in person or by post. The procedure for applying for this certificate is elaborated in MS Notice 2/2008 dated 04 Jan 08.

| Certificate of Proficiency for Ship Security Offic |
All DGS approved Ship Security Officers' (SSO) Courses meet the requirements of STCW Code and therefore current SSO certificates issued by DGS Approved Maritime Institutes stand recognised in full till 01 July 2009. However, holders of existing DGS-approved SSO certificates are required to obtain STCW format certificate from the DGS Approved Maritime Training Institute, which had issued the earlier certificates, in order to perform the functions of SSO on board after 1st July2009. This has been notified vide MS Notice 01/08 dated 04 Jan 2008.

| IGNOU Common Entrance Examination for DNS |
Common Entrance Examination (CEE) conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was made mandatory for all the candidates for its Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). Considering the request of Indian and Foreign ship owners, who conduct their own selection process, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India has waived the CEE for candidates sponsored by shipping companies for the February 2008 batch. These candidates will be admitted directly in the approved institutes. This has been notified vide DGS Training Circular No 09/2007 dated 24 Dec 07.
