  Warm welcome to the hijacked crew of "Biscaglia" in Mumbai

3RD February, 2009


After being held hostage by Somali pirates for nearly two months, the 31 crewmembers, of which 25 were Indian sailors, of the hijacked ship M.T. Biscaglia were released unharmed on 23rd January, 2009.M.T. Biscaglia, a Liberian flag vessel, was hijacked on November 28 by Somali pirates at the Gulf of Aden.

Besides Indians, there were three Bangladeshis, two Britons and an Irish sailor on the vessel. The chemical tanker was carrying 16,282 tones of cargo and was traveling between Indonesia and Europe. The ship, operated out of Singapore by Ishima Private Ltd, is owned by company in Marshall Islands.


We are now happy to inform you that today, 30th January, 2009, the crewmembers of the hijacked ship "Biscaglia" arrived safely in Mumbai from Muscat by Oman Airways flight no WY 805 at 5.30 a.m. early morning.

The Crewmembers were received and given a warm welcome home by representatives of National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) at the airport. Crewmembers had an emotional reunion with their now relieved family members amidst tears of joy and celebration.

The crew of the hijacked ship "Biscaglia" remains undeterred despite being held captive for more than two months by Somali pirates. Crewmembers said they will continue to venture into the adventurous high seas.This symbolizes their everlasting commitment towards their profession and epitomizes the true fighting spirit of a 'Sailor'.
