Container ships collided in port
Container ship KUO CHANG struck berthed container ship HE BIN at Taichung Harbor, Taiwan, around noon Mar 9, while maneuvering. Strong wind said to be the culprit. Both ships sustained damages, Chinese container ship suffered several damaged containers, three cargo bays and ladder. Denmark, Mexico Ink Maritime Cooperation Deal
Denmark and Mexico have signed a maritime agreement to increase the two countries cooperation on maritime topics, including digitalization and green shipping. The maritime Memorandum of Understanding, which will focus on increased dialogue and increased cooperation in international maritime organizations, is a part of the strategic partnership agreement that the countries signed in April 2017. Seafarers Happiness Index Down
The average seafarer happiness level in the fourth quarter of 2017 was 6.25 out of 10, according to the Mission to Seafarers relaunched Seafarer Happiness Index (SHI). Diana Shipping Finds Work for Panamax Bulker
Greek dry bulk owner and operator Diana Shipping has entered into a time charter contract with Rotterdam-based Glencore Agriculture B.V. for one of its Panamax dry bulk vessels, the M/V Calipso. The gross charter rate is USD 12,200 per day for a period of about fifteen to eighteen months. The charter is expected to commence on March 12, 2018. The Panamax bulker, built in 2005, was previously chartered to Transgrain Shipping B.V., also from Rotterdam, at a gross charter rate of USD 9,000 per day.Posted On:10-Mar-2018

ABB wins total solution order for first polar newbuild
ABB will deliver a comprehensive scope of power, automation, propulsion and digital solutions for the new Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. vessel that will take passengers on exploration cruises in remote polar areas. Designed with a focus on safety, environmental sustainability and comfort, this ice-going vessel will be equipped with ABB s power and automation solutions, as well as two Azipod DO propulsion units. The polar explorer is designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions and will be constructed by the Norwegian yard Ulstein Verft. Fire on container ship under control, no word on missing crew
Fire on Maersk s container ship finally came under control today, but there was no success in finding the four missing crew members, including an Indian who have been untraceable since Tuesday s incident. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), which is co-ordinating search and rescue as well as fire fighting operations on the vessel in the Arabian Sea, feels the missing crew members may be trapped on board Maersk Honam itself.Posted On:10-Mar-2018

New JDP looks to drive marine battery safety and adoption
Classification society DNV GL has announced the launch of a Joint Development Project (JDP), designed to advance the understanding of the use of lithium-ion batteries in the shipping industry. More than a dozen partners from the entire value chain have joined the initiative, including flag states, research institutions, battery and propulsion suppliers, fire detection and extinguishing system providers, and ship owners, operators and yards. "Including batteries in ships, whether as a hybrid or fully electric system, offers the industry the opportunity to improve fuel economy, reliability and operational costs," says Geir Dugstad, Director of Ship Classification and Technical Director in DNV GL - Maritime.Posted On:10-Mar-2018
