Gulf Navigation appoints new group chief executive
Gulf Navigation has appointed a new group chief executive, alongside its second new board of directors in three months, following significant changes in ownership.

The Dubai-based shipping firm yesterday named Khamis Juma Buamim, who served as chairman of Dubai's Drydocks World from 2010-15, as group chief executive with immediate effect.

It is unclear as to whether Mr Buamim's appointment is seen as a replacement for chief executive Parag Jain, who was confirmed in December, or a complementary role that will run alongside Mr Jain's.

Mr Buamim did not respond to a request for comment. Gulf Navigation was not available for comment.

Mr Buamim's appointment comes after the company last month elected a new chairman, Abdulla Al Hemeiri, together with a new board of directors, after a similar overhaul in January.

The overhaul in senior management comes as two Gulf Navigation investors - Diamond Line General Trading and Tabarak Constructions - increased their shareholdings in the company in recent weeks to 8.55 per cent and 10.35 per cent respectively.

It is unclear as to how long the two companies have been investors in the company, and when they increased their shareholdings. Neither could be reached for comment.

The two companies are also investors in Dubai-based Islamic insurer Takaful Emarat. A spokeswoman for the insurer said that both companies were domiciled in the UAE.

Meanwhile, Integrated Capital, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Financial Group (ADFG), has decreased its shareholding in Gulf Navigation to under 5 per cent, from its previous level of 6.01 per cent, according to an ADFG spokesman.

Integrated Capital's director of special projects Pathikrit Ban­ar­jee is among the seven board members elected in March. However, the ADFG chairman Jassim Alseddiqi, appointed to the board in January, is not.

Gulf Navigation in February announced a doubling of annual profits for 2015, thanks to growth in the shipping services business, even as it remains in breach of several loan covenants incurred by its VLCC segment, which it has subsequently divested.

The company's shares have been the second best performer on the Dubai Financial Market in 2016 behind Shuaa Capital, rising 54.8 per cent since the start of the year, in comparison with 11.1 per cent for the market as a whole.

The company's shares rose 3.45 per cent to 96 fils yesterday, before the news of Mr Buamim's appointment was disclosed.

Becker Marine Systems at "Sea Japan 2016"
The Japanese maritime market is gaining in importance for Becker Marine Systems. The Hamburg-based company is now opening an office in Kobe and is showing its innovative products at the "Sea Japan" exhibition: manoeuvring systems and energy-saving devices for ships.

Every two years about 500 exhibitors present themselves to the approx. 20,000 trade visitors at the "Sea Japan" exhibition in Tokyo. As it has for many years, Becker Marine System will also be represented at Japan's most important industry gathering this year. From 13th to 15th April the Hamburg-based ship supplier will be showing its product portfolio at a stand in the "Big Sight Exhibition Center" (East Hall 1&2, No. JPN-39) along with its cooperation partner, Nakashima Propeller.

"We have been able to establish ourselves on the Japanese market in the past few years", said Henning Kuhlmann, Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems, "we now want to adapt ourselves more to the special market in Japan and continue to increase the level of awareness in the region." The market leader for high-performance rudders and energy-saving devices in the marine equipment sector would like to convince shipping companies and shipyards of the benefits of its products at the trade fair.

Becker Marine Systems was recently awarded orders for Becker Twisted Rudders by Imabari Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as well as a King Support Rudder by Japan Marine United. Moreover, the Sanoyas shipyard ordered Becker Mewis Ducts® for its 61,000 dtw bulk carriers. The use of the energy-saving Becker Mewis Duct®, which is also being presented at "Sea Japan", can lower fuel consumption by up to 8% depending on vessel type.

In addition to the successful distribution partnership with Nakashima Propeller, Becker Marine Systems will be opening its own office in Kobe, Japan in the coming months. "From our new support office we want to respond significantly more to the needs of the local market and provide technical support", said Kuhlmann about Becker Marine Systems involvement in Japan.

LPG carriers get an opportunity to be awarded with Green Award certificate
The Green Award Foundation, which certifies ships that significantly surpass minimum required industry standards, has added a new sector to its certification programmes’ portfolio. A certification programme for LPG carriers has been launched. From the 1st of April, 2016, fully refrigerated LPG carriers from 20,000 m3 are eligible for Green Award certification.

The LPG certification program adds to already existing certification programmes for oil and chemical tankers, bulk, container and LNG carriers and inland navigation ships. This programme comes as a result of demands by the industry. After tremendous cooperation from various stakeholders, Green Award is proud to announce the launch of the LPG carriers certification programme.

Due to significant interest from the LPG sector the programme's launch has been marked by the very first LPG carrier office having been already audited and certified. Consolidated Marine Management Inc. from Greece is the first Green Award LPG certificate holder that met the new requirements. An official ceremony took place on the 1st of April in Athens. Green Award’s Chairman Captain Dimitrios Mattheou and Executive Director Jan Fransen handed over the Green Award board to Kostas G. Vlachos, COO of Consolidated Marine Management.

The cooperation of the stakeholders in the LPG transport sector with Bureau Green Award resulted in the set of requirements which was fully reviewed and approved by the Board of Experts and Committee. Amongst the main topics relevant for LPG carriers that the bureau added/amended, are:

Enclosed space entry
Medical tests on effects from cargoes
Cargo operations and cargo related safety instructions
Training / Courses for Personnel
Additional Green Award Requirements (insulation / heat loss)

The requirements for the LPG carriers’ programme are based on the Green Award's stringent and challenging yet achievable requirements (version 2013). They are cross-referenced with those of oil tankers, chemical tankers and LNG carriers. These new LPG requirements are even taken a step further. They include elements of upcoming requirements 2016, which are imminent to be released for all ship types. They include Noise and Vibration Management, Waste Management / Garbage Handling Onboard, STCW related elements (incl. Fatigue Management), Navigation and ECDIS and Sulphur Content of Fuel.

The input and support from the stakeholders throughout the entire process of developing and launching of the project was invaluable and the final result could not have been achieved without them. Green Award sincerely thanks all parties involved!
