Chemical Cargo Ignites aboard Boxship in Thailand Port
More than 130 people were admitted to hospital following an explosion and fire aboard a KMTC containership at Thailand s Laem Chabang terminal.
The incident occurred on board the 1,600 TEU containership KMTC Hong Kong early on May 24. The fire involved hazardous cargo on the ship, thereby forcing officials to evacuate and temporarily close three piers in Thailand’s eastern Laem Chabang port.
Thailand s Ministry of Public Health informed that there were no major injuries.
Initial reports suggested that the fire broke out in a load of cargo containing the chemical calcium hypochlorite, Reuters cited port director Yuthana Mokkao as saying.
As of the morning hours of May 26, the fire was understood to be under control or extinguished, while authorities turned their attention to chemical contamination at sea, on land and in the air. Booms were deployed around the ship and emergency teams are collecting fluid slime from destroyed or damaged containers.
Media reports suggested that there were 676 containers on board the vessel when it arrived at the terminal, 443 of which were offloaded with 35 more to go. Among containers destroyed or damaged by explosion and fire, five tank containers were loaded with liquid paraffin and 13 contained calcium hypochlorite.
Relevant authorities launched an investigation into the incident.

Maersk Third Shipping Giant to Join Traxens
Danish shipping major A.P. Moller - Maersk has decided to join its counterparts CMA CGM and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as a key shareholder and customer of Traxens, a provider of container tracking solutions.
As informed, Maersk will invest capital in Traxens and have similar shareholder rights as CMA CGM and MSC in the company.
Maersk will also order up to 50,000 Traxens devices, a similar order to those placed earlier by CMA CGM and MSC.
Founded in 2012, Traxens has been developing solutions for the cargo logistics arena and has created a container monitoring and coordination solution. CMA CGM first invested in the startup in 2012 and was later joined by MSC in 2016.
With the new investment, Traxens said it can now focus on strengthening its solution and drive interoperability based on non-proprietary technologies and open standards. The development of Traxens as an open industry solution is expected to benefit the strategic ambition of digitizing the container shipping industry, the company explained.
"Having three of the world s largest shipping companies now supporting us, this will help accelerate our international development and contribute to our solution becoming a global market standard for the entire supply chain," Jacques Delort, General Manager of Traxens, commented.
"Creating visibility into the condition and location of containerized cargo is bringing Maersk s strategy to offer digital end-to-end solutions to life. Having pioneered IoT-technology in our reefer fleet, we are excited to join Traxens and collaborate on the huge potential within connected containers. With this investment we look forward to working with key industry players to advance a … solution within connected products and technologies for high value cargo," Ingrid Uppelschoten Snelderwaard, Vice President, Head of Equipment at Maersk, said.
Now counting among shareholders three of the world s leading shipping lines, operating nearly half the global container fleet, Traxens offers the logistics ecosystem an interoperable smart container solution.
The solution addresses key challenges in the shipping industry faced by both vessel and cargo owners. With the combination of telematics and smart data processing, vessel owners can control costs and develop more agile business problem solving, while cargo owners can easily keep track of their containers, bringing improved business processes and decision-making capabilities.

Sri Lanka is in advanced talks with India and Japan to construct a container terminal at the port in Colombo, next to a Chinese terminal built as part of Beijing s Belt and Road Initiative, government officials said.
The involvement of India and Japan is the latest sign that Sri Lanka wants to neutralise the growing influence of China, which has poured money into the South Asian island under its mammoth Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure plan, to the alarm of other Asian powers.
