Wallenius SOL Picks MAN Cryo Fuel Gas Supply Systems for New RoRos
Swedish shipping line Wallenius SOL has selected MAN Energy Solutions LNG fuel-gas supply systems for its two new icebreaking roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels.
On January 22, MAN said that its marine LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer MAN Cryo signed the contract with Wallenius SOL, the company established by Wallenius Lines and SOL in April 2019 to transport forestry products and other goods in a network covering the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.
MAN Energy Solutions has also been selected to supply 2 × 9L28/32DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines to each vessel.
The two LNG-fueled RoRos are being built at Yantai Raffles shipyard in China. Upon completion, the vessels will be the largest to ever meet Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A Super standard, ensuring year-round service in the frozen Gulf of Bothnia.
The 242-meter newbuilds will have a sailing speed of 20 knots and a capacity of 5,800 lane meters. Delivery of the vessels is scheduled for 2021 and the order includes an option for two further vessels.
"These RoRos will operate in a sensitive, sulphur-emission-control area in harsh winter conditions where a reliable LNG fuel-gas supply system is of the utmost importance. We are very pleased that both shipyard and shipowner trust us to deliver the fuel-gas supply system for … vessels," Louise Andersson, Head of MAN Cryo, commented.

Autonomous Ship Project Bankrolled by EU
The autonomous-ship project being developed by the Norwegian maritime cluster has received around EUR 20.1 million (USD 22 million), one of the largest grants ever given to Norwegian players, from Horizon 2020, an EU research program.
Under the project, Kongsberg is going to install and test autonomous technology on two vessels in different operational environments. The two autonomous vessels will be demonstrated for use especially in short sea coastal shipping and Europe s inland waterways.
"The Norwegian maritime cluster, which Kongsberg is part of, is the world leader in autonomous shipping. Now we are further strengthening our position through the AUTOSHIP project which will accelerate the realisation of next-generation autonomous ships and make a roadmap for commercialising autonomous shipping in the EU in the next five years," says Egil Haugsdal, CEO of Kongsberg Maritime.
AUTOSHIP, a four-year Horizon 2020 project, is a collaboration between Kongsberg and Norway’s research organisation, SINTEF, as well as several European partners, including support from the Research Council of Norway.
"The race is underway internationally. The technology contributes to safer, more efficient and sustainable operations at sea, both in transport and aquaculture. The project now receives one of the largest allocations from the EU s Horizon 2020 program to a Norwegian player ever. This is a NOK 200 million mark of quality," says Iselin Nybo, Norway s Minister of Research and Higher Education.
General cargo vessel Eidsvaag Pioneer is one of the two vessels that will now be equipped for remote-operated and autonomous maritime transport. This ship is owned by the Eidsvaag shipping company and operates along the Norwegian coast and in vulnerable fjord areas where it carries fish feed to fish-farms.
According to Kongsberg, markets for both short sea coastal shipping and transport on inland waterways are expected to explode in the next few years, both in Norway, Europe, and worldwide.
"We will demonstrate that it is possible to remotely operate several ships from land and over large geographical areas. The technology is used in different ways on the vessel to show that the solutions can be applied widely. This is a market with significant potential," says Haugsdal.
As explained, the aim of the project is to test and further develop key technology linked to fully autonomous navigation systems, intelligent machinery systems, self-diagnostics, prognostics and operation scheduling, as well as communication technology enabling a prominent level of cybersecurity and integrating the vessels into upgraded e-infrastructure.
"We will contribute by developing cloud-based communications systems and advanced simulations to test and ensure that the autonomous vessels operate safely and optimally," says Hege Skryseth, the CEO of Kongsberg Digital.
The other vessel to be equipped with autonomous technology is a Belgian pallet shuttle barge owned by Blue Line Logistics NV. The ship operates on canals in Europe, transporting goods to and from large container ports.
The cluster believes Europe s inland waterways can achieve major environmental gains by using new technology.
Kongsberg added that an autonomous barge in operation is expected to take around 7,500 trucks off the roads each year, resulting in reductions in both traffic congestion and emissions.

Port of Karachi Bans Discharge of Scrubber Wash Water
The Port of Karachi in Pakistan has joined the list of ports enforcing a ban on discharge of wash water from open-loop scrubbers, according to Standard Club.
The discharge of wash-water from open-loop scrubbers is prohibited in port. While in the port, vessels fitted with hybrid type of scrubbers should switch to the closed-loop mode of operations," the marine insurer said, referring to a circular issued by the Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
"As for vessels fitted with open-loop scrubbers, they would need to switch over to compliant fuel instead."
The circular advises ships to carry out this switch-over well in advance of the ship s arrival in port waters so that any operational issues can be identified and dealt with before the ship enters Pakistani waters.
The announcement follows the entry into force of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulphur cap on January 1, 2020. Under the new regulation, the limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas is reduced to 0.5% from 3.5%.
In order to comply with the upcoming regulations, some shipowners installed scrubbers while others use compliant fuels. Many shipowners have opted for open-loop scrubbers that use sea water as the process fluid and discharge the treated water overboard.
Due to concerns about the negative effect of wash water discharges in port areas, some ports such as the Port of Singapore, the Port of Fujairah and the Port of Bahrain have also prohibited the use of open-loop scrubbers. In addition, countries such as Malaysia and Bermuda prohibit the use of open-loop scrubbers in their waters.
The most recent open-loop scrubber ban concerns the Suez Canal. Earlier this month, the Suez Canal Authority advised shipowners that discharging wash water from open-loop scrubbers during transit in the waterway is forbidden.

Large Vessel Demand Rises as Boxships Queuing for Scrubber Retrofits
More than 100 containerships aggregating 950,000 TEUs were in yards for scrubber retrofits last month before the International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulphur cap entered into force on January 1, 2020, according to Alphaliner.
Many of these retrofits combined routine dry dockings for planned maintenance and classification surveys deadlines.
Even after the deduction of the routine maintenance/class work component, the scrubber retrofits have been freezing the equivalent of 90 standard ships of 8,500 TEU, the shipping analyst estimated.
Furthermore, another 15 ships totaling 130,000 TEUs were lying at anchor in December while awaiting their yard slots as retrofits have been plagued by delays due in particular to a lack of trained manpower and of yard capacity.
As a result, the IMO 2020 regulation and their consequences have become a major driver for the charter market, Alphaliner explained. This was driven by two main factors - the need to find substitute ships to fill the gaps left by vessels immobilized for scrubber retrofits and the vessel scarcity created by this extra demand has boosted charter rates.
On the other hand, the long line of boxships waiting to enter repair yards for the installation of scrubbers with extended yard stays are coasting shipowners dearly in vessel downtime. Among the top twelve carriers, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been the most badly affected by the retrofit delays, with at least 15 vessels clocking yard stays of over 80 days, Alphaliner s data showed.
At the end of 2019, ships with exhaust gas cleaning systems reportedly accounted for some 5.9% of the total number of containerships or 11.8% of the total TEU capacity of the fleet.
As informed, more scrubber fitted containerships are expected to be delivered in the next two years, including both newbuildings and retrofitted units, that could possibly bring their total number to some 1,000 ships for 10 million TEU by the end of 2022.

Schulte, DEVK make New Maritime Asset Investment Platform
Germany s shipowner and ship manager Schulte Group and compatriot insurance group DEVK have established Navigo Shipholding AG, a maritime asset investment platform for institutional investors.
As explained, the long-term objective of Navigo is to build up a mixed portfolio of vessels, predominantly under long-term charter agreements, providing good visibility of future earnings and thereby ensuring a calculable long-term steady yield.
"Navigo has been established to offer institutional investors a capable, competitive and not least distinctly different investment alternative," the Schulte Group said in a statement.
The initial investment portfolio comprises two vessels, a service operation vessel (SOV) for wind farms with a long-term charter to General Electric (GE), currently under construction, and a 12,000 cbm gas carrier operated in the Unigas Pool.
Navigo is directed by Ole Daus-Petersen, who has more than 25 years of experience in the shipping industry, and Andreas Spott, who is working as Manager Project Finance for Bernhard Schulte and is seconded to the new company.
The Schulte Group owns 90 and manages 600 vessels globally.

Masterful control of the ship in a dangerous situation
Ferry NORDNORGE entered Bodo harbor, Norway, and was proceeding to berth, on Jan 21, when suddenly wind strengthened to some 30-35 meters/sec, putting ferry and her Master in a very difficult situation. Understood she couldn t safely maneuver to skip berthing and wait out until wind quiets down, so Master decided to dock, with onshore wind pushing ferry towards pier. He masterfully controlled ship s positioning with propulsion and anchor, until the ship finally, berthed alongside pier, as smoothly as if assisted by tugs.

Customs boat capsized, 3 officers died, in collision with smugglers, Hong Kong
Hong Kong Customs boat CE13 with 5 Customs Officers on board on Jan 21 collided with allegedly, smuggling boat, carrying illegal cargo of frozen meat, near Chek Lap Kok island, north of Lantau Island, Hong Kong. Customs boat capsized, leaving 3 officers trapped inside cabin. Divers rescued them, but all 3 died later in hospital. 2 officers who weren t inside cabin, survived. Smugglers boat later was found and seized, with no people on board.

Dredger barge grounded too avoid sinking, Matagorda Ship Channel, Texas
Dredger barge EVERETT FISHER started to take on water in the evening Jan 21 in the Matagorda Ship Channel near Port Lavaca, Texas, while being towed by tug DANA ROBYN. To avoid sinking, tug pushed barge aground. Barge 4 crew went to tug. USCG and other concerned agencies are responding.

Geothermal energy research in Port of Rotterdam enters next phase
Shell Geothermal BV and the Port of Rotterdam Authority are together investigating the possibilities for geothermal energy in the Port of Rotterdam s western section. The two companies have received an exploration permit from the Ministry of Economic Affairs for this.
The subsurface has been mapped out thoroughly in recent years as part of the Ultra-Deep Geothermal Energy (UDG) green deal.

Coal Throughput At Vostochny Port Rose 5.2% To 25.51 Million Tonnes In 2019
In 2019, Vostochny Port JSC, operator of Russia s largest dedicated terminal offering technologically advanced transshipment of coal (run by Port Management Company, PMC LLC) handled 25.51 million tonnes of coal (+5.2%, or 1.25 million tonnes, year-on-year), says press center of the stevedoring company.
According to the statement, the growth was driven by the launching of Phase 3 of Vostochny Port s specialized coal terminal increasing the terminal s total capacity to 50-55 million tonnes per year.

Belarus to import oil from Norway s Johan Sverdrup field - Belneftekhim
Belarus oil company BNK will import crude from Norway s Johan Sverdrup field via Lithuania s Klaipeda port this month because of a supply row with Russia, Belarus state company Belneftekhim that controls BNK told Reuters.
Russia suspended oil supplies to refineries in Belarus from Jan. 1, though it partially restored them on Jan. 4, after both countries failed to agree terms on supplies for 2020.

Marubeni, Klaveness make Giant Panamax Pool Operator
Japan s Marubeni Corporation and Norwegian dry bulk operator Klaveness are merging Panamax Pool activities.
A jointly owned pool management company, Maruklav Management Inc., will be led by Michael Jorgensen as the company MD, with Masashi Kobayashi from Marubeni as Deputy MD.
The combination of existing fleets in the MG Harrison Shipping and Baumarine Pools will see the venture with a fleet of approximately 30 vessels starting operations in early April.

Europe s top bunkering port, the Port of Rotterdam, has seen an increase in LNG bunkering at the port.

MUA Threatens with Fresh Industrial Action as Tensions with DP World Intensify
The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) is planning a new wave of industrial action across Australian terminals as tensions between the union workers and stevedoring company DP World Australia heat up.
As informed, the latest action on behalf of the giant stevedoring company, which employs over 1,800 workers, has seen wharfies employed at DP World in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle stripped of approved leave.

Dubai-based port and terminal operator DP World and Switzerland s container terminal operator Swiss terminal Holding AG have entered into a strategic partnership.
With effect from January 23, 2020, DP World will take a stake of 44% in Swiss terminal Holding AG with the Mayer family - that founded the business - remaining the majority shareholder.

Russian fishing vessel fire, 47 crew evacuated, Okhotsk sea
Fire erupted on board of fishing vessel ENIGMA ASTRALIS early in the morning Jan 21 in Okhotsk sea SE of Magadan, Russia. No information on fire cause and on fire area, where exactly did it start. Reportedly, all 47 crew went to nearby fishing vessels, there is a lot of smoke, but no visible flame. Vessel s AIS is on, as of 0500 UTC Jan 21 she was drifting, with many vessels nearby.
