SAL Heavy Lift to Retrofit Ships with New Hydrogen-Methanol Injection System
Hamburg-based SAL Heavy Lift has become the world s first shipping company to equip vessels with a new hydrogen/methanol injection technology.
With significant emission reductions in terms of CO2, SOx, NOx and other particles, the injection technology developed by Germany s manufacturer of fuel-saving additive, Fuelsave GmbH, paves the way for making shipping greener and more energy-efficient, according to SAL Heavy Lift.
After more than four years of testing and development, the new and advanced FS MARINE+ hydrogen/methanol injection solution is now entering the next stage of validation, after which it will find its way to six SAL vessels as a permanent installation.
By dynamically injecting a mix of hydrogen, oxygen, water and methanol into selected parts of the air intake of both the main engine and the auxiliary engines, the system is said to ensure a much cleaner and thorough combustion process, resulting in reduced primary fuel consumption alongside lowering emissions and air pollution.
"We have tested a prototype on a generator engine of our MV Annette over more than two years with very convincing results. The FS MARINE+ system not only achieved significant fuel savings, but also emission and air pollution reductions which was verified by 3rd parties both during field trials and in laboratory tests," Sebastian Westphal, CTO of SAL Heavy Lift, said.
Specifically, the FS MARINE+ generator has proven to make average reductions of 10% less CO2, 15% less SOx, 30-80% less NOx and 40% less particle emissions.
"With this system we are driving the clean fuel transition with a high impact solution. It can optimize the energy consumption and the environmental impact significantly irrespective of what fuel type you operate your vessel with. Thus, it is applicable with MDO, MGO, HFO, LSFO as well as LNG," Marc Sima, CEO of Fuelsave, commented.
By investing millions of dollars into retrofitting the system to the main engines and auxiliary engines on existing vessels it may appear that SAL is taking a big financial bet, but the results in terms of savings and payback time prove quite the opposite, SAL explained.
"We ran the system for two years without a single incident and obtained results that matched the promised numbers. So, we see a technology that meets our green ambitions while also reducing the technical operating costs of the ships," Jakob Christiansen, Naval Architect and Head of SALs Fleet Development Team, noted.
SAL s MV Trina is the first vessel to be retrofitted with the system in Q1 2020. Following a successful system integration on MV Trina, five more vessels will follow, paving the way for a greener and more energy-efficient shipping service.

Overseas Shipholding Extends Charters for American Shipping Company s Tanker Quartet
Florida-based tanker shipping company Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) has exercised options to extend its bareboat charter agreements with Norwegian-American shipowner American Shipping Company for four vessels currently under charter from AMSC.
As informed, each bareboat charter agreement was extended for additional three-year terms, commencing from December 2020 and ending in December 2023.
OSG previously exercised its options to extend charter agreements for all of the six other ships that it leases from AMSC. As a result, all ten bareboat charter agreements with AMSC have now been extended for additional periods.
"The decision to further extend the maturities of each of the four vessels underscores our confidence that the continuing move towards balance in the Jones Act tanker market is an opportunity to serve our core customers in a rate environment that will provide attractive returns over time," Sam Norton, OSG s CEO, commented.
The bareboat charter agreements provide that the three- and five-year options for these vessels are available indefinitely. The lease payments for the bareboat charters are fixed throughout the option periods, and the options are on a vessel-by-vessel basis and can be exercised individually.
"We are pleased to see OSG continuing to extend the bareboat charters for our vessels. AMSC benefits from the cash flow stability provided by these contracts and exposure to increasing profits in the future," Pal Lothe Magnussen, AMSC s CEO, said.
OSG provides energy transportation services for crude oil and petroleum products in the U.S. Flag markets. The company s fleet comprises 21 vessels. In addition, OSG has two barges under construction in the U.S. that will be Jones Act qualified vessels, with delivery anticipated during 2020.
Established in 2005, AMSC owns nine Handysize product tankers and one Handysize shuttle tanker on a long-term bareboat charter with OSG.

National Geographic Endurance Floated Out in Norway
Lindblad Expeditions Holdings new polar expedition ship was floated out in Ulsteinvik, Norway on December 7, ship builder and designer Ulstein said.
The National Geographic Endurance is the first of two X-Bow polar vessels ordered by the US-based cruise company Lindblad Expeditions at Ulstein Verft.
Scheduled to join the Lindblad-National Geographic fleet in 2020, the newbuild will undergo final work prior to delivery, according to Ulstein.
In late April 2019, the National Geographic Endurance was towed to Ulsteinvik from Gydnia, Poland, where construction of the main hull steel work was completed.
The National Geographic Endurance, a Polar Class 5 vessel, can accommodate 126 passengers in 69 outside-facing cabins. One of its key features is Ulstein s X-Bow, a bow that provides fuel efficiency and a very high ice class for access deep into polar regions. The ship s expanded fuel and water tanks provide for extended operations in remote areas, while the zero-speed stabilizers will ensure stability, whether at zero speed or full steam ahead.
The National Geographic Endurance will be followed by the National Geographic Resolution, the second polar newbuild slated for delivery in 2021. In October, Lindblad Expeditions and Ulstein celebrated the keel laying for the National Geographic Resolution at the CRIST shipyard in Poland. The occasion also served as the official naming ceremony of the vessel.

MOL Books Construction of EeneX Coal Carrier Pair at Oshima
Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has ordered two EeneX next-generation coal carriers from compatriot Oshima Shipbuilding Co., the company informed.
The two vessels will operate under contracts with Japanese electric power companies, Electric Power Development Co., and Hokuriku Electric Power Company, supplying coal from overseas to their power plants in Japan.
MOL said that it expects its EeneX vessels will play a leading role in the group s coal carrier business.
The design of the 90,000 DWT coal carrier was developed in cooperation with Japanese shipyards and incorporates a double-hull structure, semi-box shape of the hold and is ballast-free, meaning that it doesn t include ballast holds only cargo holds.
The design was unveiled in June this year as the product of MOL s extensive knowledge of the operation of coal carriers.
LOA About 235m
Breadth About 38m
Depth About 20.05m
Deadweight tons About 89,900 MT
MOL has been predominantly active in ordering LNG carriers over the recent period, and according to the data from VesselsValue, there are currently 9 LNG newbuilds under construction for the shipping major. The company has six bulkers, three Supramaxes being built at Oshima, as well as one VLCC on order as well.

Port cities must connect to enable smarter shipping practises or face climate crises alone, reveals new SEA20 study
A new study by SEA20 suggests that international collaboration between maritime cities is a political necessity to make shipping more connected and sustainable, and that creating an environmentally friendly maritime infrastructure will in turn become a critical interest for city leaders. Key marine cities are in the process of forming SEA20, a network of cities to lead sustainable maritime development and become the urban voice towards international regulation.
