New Suez Canal Up and Running
Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi officially inaugurated the New Suez Canal in the port city of Ismailiya at 2 pm local time today.
The USD 8 billion project, which took 11 months to complete, included the widening and deepening of 35 kilometers of the existing Canal up to a depth of 24 meters, as well as digging and creating 37 kilometers of the so-called "second lane," running parallel to the existing Canal.
The new 72-km section of the Canal is expected to bring three times more revenue to Egypt by 2023. Egypt expects that up to 20,000 ships will transit the route on a yearly basis. The new stretch of the Canal is also projected to cut transit times from 20 to about 11 hours.
In addition, over the next five years Egypt plans to invest into construction of an industrial and logistical zone along the canal in order to attract further investment into the area.
Trade analysts say that it is yet unclear whether the New Suez Canal will spur more traffic or better accommodate the major rise in throughput since 2011 as macroeconomic factors and toll levels may be far more influential in determining future shipment volumes than the introduction of the two-way traffic.

N.C. Maritime participates in Pirate Invasion
Young dreamers are invited to the N.C. Maritime Museum during Beaufort's annual Pirate Invasion on Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8.
During the mock invasion participants will witness living history demonstrations, sword fights, cannon firing, black powder weapons displays, a mock trial and much more.
The museum will offer a child and parent friendly zone where children can participate in programs and activities for visitors to enjoy. Free activities will include pirate hats, museum sea hunts, pirate tattoos and more.
Visitors will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt that will take them around Beaufort looking for pirates.
The N.C. Maritime Museum will offer a reward to everyone who can locate all 14 pirates featured on this year’s "Beaufort's Most Wanted" cards. These cards can be purchased for $1.25 in the museum's gift shop while supplies last.
At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the N.C. Maritime Museum will host its annual "Lunch with Pirates." Seaside Sensations Catering will cater the lunch.
While enjoying their lunch, families will be treated to a fashion show featuring the latest trends in the pirate world, put together by the East Coast Pirate Crew.
The infamous pirate Blackbeard will also be present and may even be willing to tell his tale of piracy. Reservations are required for the Lunch with Pirates, and tickets are $20 per person.
"The Lunch with Pirates is always a very popular event," said Christine Brin, museum educator. "The kids enjoy meeting Blackbeard and the parents enjoy the air-conditioned and calm atmosphere," she stated.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, families will have their chance to enjoy some free activities and crafts in the museum's library.
Children will get a pirate hat, official pirate tattoo, a pirate sash and even make a "super-secret" pirate treasure map. The activities will close during the "Lunch with Pirates" at 11:30 a.m. but will reopen at 12:30 and run until 4 p.m.
Inside the museum, visitors can see the artifacts from Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge in a newly expanded exhibit.
One of the highlights of the new exhibit is a conservation laboratory where visitors can view and interact with conservators as they prepare Queen Anne's Revenge artifacts for eventual exhibition.
The lab will provide visitors with a better understanding of the work that goes into preparing these- artifacts as they come from the ocean floor to the museum door.
The lab has been designed to support a wide range of conservation activities from opening concretions and cleaning to photography and documentation. It has both wet and dry cleaning stations, an air scribe booth and examination areas.
Broad windows on two sides of the lab will allow visitors to easily observe the work in progress and interact with the conservators. The lab will be manned by a combination of students, professional conservators and museum staff.
These activities are offered as part of the Second Saturdays programs offered this summer in conjunction with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. Second Saturdays combines the power of arts and heritage with hands-on fun each second Saturday during the peak summertime faction months. The Second Saturdays' events are free for all ages. Hoover Container Solutions opens service facility in Brazil
Hoover Container Solutions (Hoover), a global provider of chemical tanks, cargo carrying units and related products and services, has announced the opening of its new service facility in Brazil. The wash line facility allows Hoover to provide expanded cleaning services while handling all intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), ISO tanks and offshore equipment destined for oil and gas platforms, mining sites, islands and supply bases in the region.
Hoover's new wash line facility is equipped with experienced staff who are licensed to clean a wide variety of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The site hosts a full range of tank cleaning services including: easy clean (steam or flush), moderate clean (caustic or detergent), difficult clean (boosted caustic or pre-solve), exterior clean with internal process or exterior clean only.
The high power wash system generates 1,500 psi of pressure used for the washing and rinsing of fluid storage or transportation containers. The closed-loop system, designed to recycle wash water, allows for minimal waste water disposal while maximizing customer savings. Steam is used to aid in accelerating the cleaning process and in improving the cleaning power of the detergent. During the final stage of cleaning processes, the wash system uses a fresh water rinse that has been pumped through cartridge filters to thoroughly cleanse containers.
The Brazil facility is capable of washing four 5,000 liter containers or four 1,500 liter containers at once with a total cleansing time of 32 and 20 minutes, respectively, per complete cycle—interior, exterior and drying.
"The addition of this service facility allows us to efficiently and safely clean a wide variety of products while minimizing costly downtime," said Arash Hassanian, vice president of Global Sales and Marketing for Hoover. "Hoover is committed to providing our customers with high quality, cost effective and environmentally conscientious solutions that meet industry standards and improve customer performance."
