All-women crew of Indian Vessel MT Swarna Krishna makes history
In an attempt to acknowledge the efforts of women in breaking down the stereotypes in erstwhile male-dominated maritime sector, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has flagged off an all-women crew onboard Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) vessel MT Swarna Krishna, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said on Sunday.

UK : RNLI and coastguard launched after concerns for sailors welfare
An operation involving HM Coastguard, RNLI crews and police took place late last night off the coast of Plymouth after concerns were raised about a sailor s welfare.
Police have confirmed a number of agencies were involved in the incident which began in Torquay when the owner of a yacht set off from Torquay harbour at around 2.05pm yesterday having made concerning remarks.

Nigeria: 14 kidnapped sailors rescued in Gulf of Guinea
Fourteen sailors kidnapped by pirates were rescued Saturday in the Gulf of Guinea.
Nigeria s army spokesman Mohammed Yerim said 10 foreign crew members and four Nigerians who were taken hostage were rescued in an operation off of the coasts of Nigeria and Gabon.

Philippines : DFA to repatriate stranded Pinoy seamen
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has vowed to repatriate Filipino seafarers stranded in Mozambique.
"We re working on repatriating them asap," Brigido Dulay, undersecretary for the DFA, said in a post on Twitter. The seafarers were stranded in the Southern African country after their fishing vessel sunk.

Nigeria intensifies seafarers training to fast-track shipping development, economic diversification
With maritime now being positioned to play a central role in Nigeria s economic diversification drive, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is intensifying the training and certification of seafarers to enhance the country s position in an increasingly competitive maritime world. Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, disclosed this while presenting certificates to graduands of the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) at the Agency s headquarters in Lagos.

NZ seafarers working overseas plead for priority MIQ spots
While there are managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) rooms set aside for air crew and seafarers who have been in New Zealand waters, people who work in foreign waters must book their stay using the Managed Isolation Allocation System.
They say they re missing out on spots, getting stuck overseas and forgoing seeing their families for months because they don t know very far in advance when they will disembark their vessels.

Bangladeshi boat evades pirates
Bangladeshi bulk carrier, the Akij Pearl, escaped pirates who tried to board the cargo vessel while sailing off Sibutu Island in the province of Tawi-Tawi near the Malaysian border, reports said.
The incident, which occurred on March 3, was only reported on Sunday by the ReCAAP Information Sharing Center, which immediately issued a warning and urged ship master and crew to exercise extra vigilance when transiting the waters off Eastern Sabah and in the Sulu-Celebes Seas, in particular waters off Sibutu Island.

Registry broadcasts mass to thousands of seafarers
The Isle of Man Ship Registry has become the first flag state to broadcast a religious service direct to crew aboard its ships.
Registry director Cameron Mitchell said the services are being made possible through its new seafarer welfare app called Crew Matters.
It has been developed in partnership with training company Tapiit Live.

Container ship struck locks both in Brunsbuettel and Kiel
Container ship ANNALISA P reportedly struck Locks in both Brunsbuettel and Kiel during Kiel Canal transit on Mar 3, being northbound. In the morning the ship struck Lock in Brunsbuettel entering Canal, in the evening or at night she struck Lock at Kiel, while exiting Canal. Both Locks are said to sustain substantial damages. ANNALISA P was allowed her voyage early in the morning Mar 4, she s en route from Hamburg to Klaipeda.

Singaporean freighter disabled in Weser river, Germany
General cargo ship PAC CANOPUS suffered engine failure and had to emergency anchor in the morning Mar 5 off Elsfleth, lower Weser river, Germany, while proceeding downstream from Bremen. The ship was towed to Bremerhaven and berthed, for repairs and survey. She left Bremerhaven early in the morning Mar 6, bound for Nantes, France.

Vietnamese bulk carrier detained on pollution suspicion, Malaysia
Bulk carrier NEPTUNE STAR was detained by Malaysian Maritime Police MMEA on Mar 5 and taken to Pangkor island, Malacca Strait, Malayisa, Perak, where she was anchored. Malaysian authorities suspect bulk carrier in illegal dumping of oiled water while transiting Perak State waters, northwest Malaysia.
