New Zealand: Govt fulfilling commitment to improve seafarer welfare
The Government is fulfilling its pre-election commitment to allow more support to seafarers visiting New Zealand, Transport Minister Michael Wood announced today.
The Maritime Transport Act will be amended through the Regulatory Systems (Transport) Amendment Bill to allow maritime levies to be used to provide support services coordinated by the Seafarers Welfare Board.

Quarantine rule change considered to help Kiwi seafarers get home
Transport Minister Michael Wood told 1 NEWS today that he will promptly review the current settings after receiving correspondence from seafarers on the matter.
"I have immense sympathy for these people because many of them have been out of New Zealand for an extended period of time and that's why I'm willing to look into it and do to so relatively quickly," Wood said.

Seafarers to get more support, counselling, access to internet
The Seafarers Welfare Board has been providing counselling, access to books, the internet and toll calls to seafarers for years.
Running off charity donations a law change will see part of the Maritime Levy go towards the board which operates in 11 ports around the country.

Indian Coast Guard averts major drug transhipment in Lakshadweep Sea
The Indian Coast Guard has successfully averted a major drug transhipment in the Lakshadweep Sea by intercepting three Sri Lankan ships.
The case said to be a bigger success than the November 2020 incident when another boat from Sri Lanka with a consignment of about 1000 crore was apprehended.

Challenges of women seafarers in a male-dominated maritime industry
The word "seafarer" has replaced the word "seaman" in the male-dominated maritime industry, often considered as politically-correct word due to the increasing presence of women in the profession in recent decades.
In older times, the term "seaman" was widely used to describe anyone working at sea while the term "seawoman" was alternatively used.

Mental health issues on the rise onboard Ships
Mental health problems among seafarers are getting worse rather than better with an industry report citing an increase in ships Master request for counselling support as Asian crew members top the list of nationalities most affected.
Analysis of data generated by Mental Health Support Solutions (MHSS) over the three months to the end of February 2021, showed that anxiety among those onboard ship remained a growing issue with burnout and depression being widely reported in the first month of the study.

Passenger ship gutted by fire
Passenger ship FAJAR BARU 8 caught fire on Mar 7 shortly after she berthed at Sorong port, West Papua Province, Indonesia. Luckily, all passengers disembarked unharmed, crew understood to escape safe, also. The ship was engulfed in flames soon after fire started, port’s authorities managed to pull her away from berth.

Chinese tuna fishing vessel aground on Mauritius reefs near Port Louis
Chinese longliner LU RONG YUAN YU 588 ran aground on reefs of Pointe-aux-Sables, west of Port Louis, Mauritius, on Mar 7, probably being caught in rough seas. Fishing vessel issued distress signal and, understood, requested evacuation. Helicopter was scrambled to assist, witnesses reported distress flares fired from the vessel. Evacuation is hampered by rough weather.

Pirates boarded German container ship, looted containers
Ecuadorian news agency EXPRESO expreso.ec reported a piracy attack in Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador, in the evening Mar 6 local time. Container feeder PACORA left Guayaquil, bound for Balboa, and was boarded by armed robbers when the ship was passing buoy 66, shortly after the guards left her. They stayed on board for some 40 minutes, broke in 9 containers, apparently knowing what containers to open.

Pilot fell overboard, rescued, Dardanelles
Turkish pilot fell into water from pilot ladder, while boarding bulk carrier LORD NELSON in eastern Dardanelles, in the evening Mar 7. The ship stopped, pilot was rescued, he’s safe and in good health. Bulk carrier is en route from Ukraine to Portugal, she probably, interrupted her voyage for investigation.
