MV Werften Lays Keel for 2nd Global Class Ship for Dream Cruises
German shipbuilder MV Werften hosted a key-laying ceremony for the second 208,000 gross ton Global Class ship for Dream Cruises in Rostock on Monday, December 9.
The occasion was used for the announcement of a new ship class which is in the making by Genting Hong Kong.
"We are here for the keel laying of the second Global Class ship. But more importantly, we are starting the design and building of the next series of ships, the Universal Class ships, the first to be delivered by the end of 2022," Tan Sri KT Lim, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Genting Group, said.
As informed, Genting will operate the Universal Class ships for global hotel brands, who want to enter the cruise industry. The new midsize cruise ships will be built by MV Werften, keeping the yard busy until 2024. The ships will feature 88,000 gross tons in size, and have a capacity for 2,000 guests, making them large enough to have all the main amenities of larger cruise ships but without the crowded public space, Genting said in a press release.
The construction of the 342 meter-long Global 2 was launched in September 2019, almost exactly a year after the keel laying of the flagship of the series. Like her sister ship, Global 2 is also intended for the fast-growing Asian market. Global 1 is due to enter operation under the name Global Dream in 2021.
The Global Dream and Global 2 will boast 2,500 passenger cabins that can accommodate up to 9,500 persons and a crew of 2,200, becoming the first vessels worldwide capable of carrying more than 10,000 persons.
The construction of Global 1 is progressing well, according to the yard. At the end of November, the giant hull of the cruise ship was towed to MV Werften s dock hall in Wismar for final assembly and fitting out.
Namely, two oceangoing tugs towed the midsection of the Global Dream from the MV Werften Warnemunde at a speed of about two knots (just under 2.5 mph) in the Baltic to Wismar. The entire operation, from the flooding of the Warnemunde dock to the docking in Wismar, took three days.
A 125m high crane specially acquired for work on the Global Class ships will now be used to install deck structures on the hull, including a water park and a roller coaster.
The construction of Dream Cruises newbuilding duo is advancing as Genting Hong Kong moves forward with the sale of its 35 pct stake in the company to TPG Asia.
Genting is selling the shares for a consideration of USD 489 million, resulting in a gain of around USD 470 million for the company, as a means of bolstering its capital structure.
The transaction was set to be realized in two tranches completing by December of 2019.

Report: DSME, HHI Merger Facing Full Probe in EU
The proposed mega-merger of South Korea s top-tier shipbuilders Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), a shipbuilding spinoff of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, is reportedly about to be subject of a full-scale probe in the EU, Reuters writes citing industry sources.
The investigation is expected to be launched next week amid anti-trust concerns after the European Commission reveals the results of its preliminary review set for December 17.
The report emerges one week after Singapore s regulatory authorities raised concerns that the potential USD 2 billion tie-up is likely to remove competition between suppliers of LNG carriers and possibly large containerships and large oil tankers.
As a result, the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore is about to launch an extensive and detailed review of the planned merger.
Both reviews are expected to result in the shipyard offering concessions to address potential competition concerns, such as sell-off of assets.
Hyundai Heavy said it was working with Singaporean authorities to remove the concerns in question, however, concrete actions in that respect are yet to be revealed.
The deal has already secured a green light in late October from Kazakhstan, while decisions from regulators in South Korea, China, Japan are yet to be announced.

ABS, DSME Ink Digitalization and Decarbonization JDP
Classification society ABS and South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) have signed a joint development project (JDP) agreement to explore decarbonization and digitalization strategies for very large crude carriers (VLCC) and ultra large container ships (ULCS).
"This JDP will help us harness the potential of digitalization and drive forward decarbonization goals for the industry," Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Engineering and Technology, commented.
As informed, the JDP aims for DSME to develop ABS approved VLCC and ULCS vessel designs, which offer potential solutions to IMO 2030 decarbonization goals.
The JDP also covers onshore remote monitoring, smart and autonomy technology as well as development and review of cybersecurity aspects associated with the DSME Smart Ship platform.
"There is an increasing demand in the marine industry for vessels which have a low carbon and greenhouse gas emission footprint. Leveraging digital technologies provides a means to assist in addressing these decarbonization challenges," Odin Kwon, DSME CTO, Engineering & Technology Unit, said.
"At the same time, the increased connectivity onboard vessels can introduce cyber-related threats which need to be appropriately addressed. DSME and ABS will work together to evaluate solutions to address the decarbonization challenges, including exploring the potential of digital technology," he added.

CSSC, DNV GL Partner Up on Developing Future-Proof Solutions for Shipping
China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), which recently merged with China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC) and became the world’s largest shipbuilder, has entered into a new strategic partnership with classification society DNV GL.
A framework agreement was signed at Marintec China on December 3, 2019.
As informed, the duo will focus on developing future-proof solutions and competencies for shipping in a variety of fields including alternative fuels and environmentally friendly technologies, new vessel designs to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) greenhouse gas (GHG) targets, digitalization and cyber security.
Other areas of research and exchange are the design and building of large offshore floating structures, deep sea mining and agriculture, and ocean research activities.
Under the framework agreement, DNV GL will support CSSC in its project engineering, construction and installation process by offering classification, certification, verification, consultancy, software and joint development services to the shipbuilding group.
"We have worked together on a number of … projects already this year, and with the merger of CSSC and CSIC I am confident the strategic agreement now signed will make even more joint opportunities in our targeted markets," Remi Eriksen, Group President & CEO of DNV GL, commented.
"CSSC and DNV GL have been long-standing friends. The new strategic agreement will further strengthen our cooperation and expand its scope," Lei Fanpei, CSSC Chairman, said.
During the trade fair, DNV GL and CSSC group shipyards have already announced several joint projects, including an approval in principle (AIP) to Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard for the design of a gas-fueled 25,000 TEU container vessel, which would be the largest ship of its type to date, and a JDP with Huangpu-Wenchong Shipbuilding Company for a new energy-efficient 5,000 TEU Panamax containership for the fast-growing intra-Asia trades.
AIPs were also presented to CSSC s ship design consultancy SDARI for the design of a 93,000/135,000 cbm very large ethane carrier (VLEC), as well as to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. for a concept design of a box-type self-elevating offshore fish farming unit.
In addition, DNV GL s artificial intelligence (AI) research center signed a joint development project (JDP) with Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI). The project looks to improve welding non-destructive testing (NDT) efficiency through the use of AI technology for the automatic detection and assessment of radiography testing (RT) digital images.

Five crew of Irish freighter injured by wave hit, evacuated, Bay of Biscay
General cargo ship ARKLOW DAY left Aviles Port, Asturias, northwest Spain, at 2010 UTC Dec 9 after offloading cargo of slabs. Shortly after leaving the ship encountered rough seas of Biscay with waves up to 9 meters high. Stray wave broke the bulkhead of the compartment where five crew were located, seriously injuring all five, including wounds inflicted by steel pieces of shattered parts of the compartment. Reportedly, they suffered wounds all over their bodies. Maritime Rescue Helimer Cantabrian helicopter was sent to evacuated wounded seamen, after two hours of highly professional performance in very challenging conditions, rescue team managed to airlift them, and transfer to hospital.

"Ghost" ship seized at busy shipping lane in Johor waters
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained a Vietnamese-registered "ghost" ship, with only one crew member on board, for illegally anchoring at a busy shipping lane in Tanjung Penyusop waters here.
Johor MMEA director First Admiral Aminuddin Abdul Rashid said the vessel was spotted some 4.6 nautical miles south of Tanjung Penyusop here at about 9am yesterday.

Puerto Aguadulce services largest vessel to dock in Colombia
Sociedad Puerto Industrial de Aguadulce (SPIA) sets a new operational milestone at the Port of Buenaventura after servicing the 14,436-TEU vessel MSC Faith, the largest ship ever to dock in Colombia.
With a length of overall of 366 meters, the MSC Faith makes its maiden call in South America at Puerto Aguadulce, as part of Mediterranean Shipping Company s (MSC) weekly service between Asia and Latin America s west coast.

India: Cargo volume of 12 major ports marginally up at 463MT in Apr-Nov
Cargo volume handled by the country s top 12 ports was marginally up by 0.34 per cent at 463.07 million tonnes during the April-November period this year, according to the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
The ports had handled 461.48 MT of cargo during the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

H-Line Returns to Hyundai Samho for Another LNG Carrier
Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) group, has won a contract to construct a 174,000 cbm LNG carrier.
The deal, worth KRW 226.8 billion (USD 190.5 million) has been signed with Seoul-based shipping company H-Line Shipping.
The newbuild is expected to be handed over to its owner by June 15, 2022, Hyundai Samho said in a stock exchange filing on December 6.

MPA Singapore Revokes Inter-Pacific s Bunker Supplier License
Inter-Pacific Petroleum Pte will cease its operation as a bunker supplier in the Port of Singapore with effect from December 9, 2019, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) informed.
Inter-Pacific s license got revoked after the company filed for judicial management at the High Court of the Republic of Singapore.

Enterprise Teams Up with Enbridge on VLCC Terminal Development
American midstream natural gas and crude oil pipeline company Enterprise Products Partners and Canadian energy transportation firm Enbridge Inc. have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to jointly develop a deepwater crude oil terminal in the Gulf of Mexico.
The duo will focus on commercial development efforts on Enterprise s Sea Port Oil Terminal (SPOT) project, designed to be capable of fully loading very large crude carriers (VLCCs).

DFDS Expands Logistics Footprint with Huisman Acquisition
Danish ferry and logistics company DFDS has acquired 100% of the share capital of its compatriot logistics company Huisman Group BV.

Crane collapsed after being hit by APL container ship in Antwerp
Container ship APL MEXICO CITY broke off her mooring at Doel, Antwerp, in the afternoon Dec 9, drifted across harbor and contacted DP World pier crane. Crane, thankfully unmanned at the time, collapsed and was totally destroyed. No injures reported, but all cargo operations in harbor were suspended.

Container ship caught in storm, at least 12 containers lost, Celtic sea
Container ship ELBCARRIER lost containers overboard in Celtic sea in the afternoon Dec 8, while en route from Rotterdam to Dublin Ireland, being caught in rough weather. 12 drifting containers were spotted at 2330 UTC in vicinity 51 40N 005 50W,. Number of lost containers unknown. The ship reached Dublin in the afternoon Dec 9.
