The Panama Canal Joins Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping
The Panama Canal formally joined the Global Industry Alliance (GIA), a public-private partnership initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the framework of the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnership (GloMEEP) Project, which is a Global Environment Facility (GEF)-United Nations Development Program (UNPD)-IMO project comprised of maritime industry leaders working to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in international shipping.
Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano made the announcement today during a signing ceremony inducting the waterway into the GIA at the Panama Maritime World Conference and Exhibition, where IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim was in attendance. The announcement took place after the Panama Canal signed a letter of agreement on Friday, March 15 officially joining this group of global industry leaders.
"Today's announcement marks a proud milestone for the Panama Canal and its long legacy as the Green Route of world maritime trade," said Panama Canal Administrator Quijano. "Given our roots in sustainability and innovation, this partnership reaffirms the Canal's commitment to leading our industry to a cleaner and more efficient future."
Launched in June 2017, the GIA is a partnership of 18 leading maritime organizations working together to share their expertise and provide technical input towards the implementation of concrete activities that can support the shipping industry's transition to a low carbon future. The GIA members aim to do so by identifying and developing innovative solutions that address common barriers to the uptake and implementation of energy efficient technologies and operational measures. The Panama Canal will become the first Latin American organization to join the GIA.
The Panama Canal's inclusion in the GIA falls in line with the waterway's almost 105-year history of environmental stewardship. Since opening in 1914, the Panama Canal's strategic geographic location has enabled vessels to shorten the distance and duration of their voyages compared to alternate routes, thus reducing costs and GHG emissions. In combination with the introduction of the Expanded Panama Canal in 2016, which offers greater cargo carrying capacity and requires less cargo movements, the Panama Canal is estimated to have saved more than 750 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the course of its history.
The Panama Canal has also been recognized for its pioneering sustainability initiatives, such as its Green Connection Environmental Recognition Program, which consists of the Green Connection Award, the Environmental Premium Ranking and the Emissions Calculator. Together, the three tools promote emissions reductions by recognizing and incentivizing vessels that comply with the highest environmental performance standards while helping others mitigate their own environmental footprints. The Emissions Calculator also helps the Panama Canal measure and reduce its own carbon footprint, operate more efficiently, develop a low carbon strategy and pursue a path towards becoming a "Carbon Neutral" entity.

Nor-Shipping Director: Norsk Hydro Cyber Attack a Wake Up Call for Maritime Industry
This week s cyber attack on Norwegian aluminium producer Norsk Hydro is a sign of the growing threat facing firms within the maritime and ocean industries, according to Per Martin Tanggaard, Director of Nor-Shipping.
On Monday, Norsk Hydro computer systems were initially hit by the comparatively new LockerGoga virus. It then spread through the firm s network encrypting files.
As a result, the company, which employs some 36,000 people in 40 countries, was forced to halt production in several plants, switching to increased manual operations to bypass problems connecting to its production systems. LockerGoga works by demanding payment for the decryption of infected files.
"This is yet another wake up call for industry, and particularly for the maritime segment," Tanggaard commented.
"Shipping has been comparatively slow to join the digital revolution, but now that it has developments are moving fast, with ever increasing automation, connected operations and the move towards autonomy. It is absolutely essential that firms don’t just see the opportunities inherent here, but also the threats," he pointed out.
Tanggaard further said that shipping and ocean industry firms - which have large and expensive assets, infrastructure and cargoes - should have strategies to counter risk. He also mentioned cyber attacks that happened in the past two years, involving companies such as Maersk, COSCO, Austal as well as ports such as San Diego and Barcelona.
"Cyber security should be top of the agenda for all businesses, big and small. If a company with Norsk Hydro s resources, expertise and systems is susceptible to attack, then everybody is. Be aware," Nor-Shipping s Director warned.
In June, Nor-Shipping is organizing Ocean Leadership Conference which will tackle issues including the evolving threat landscape and devising effective cyber strategies. The conference will be held in the Thon Hotel Arena Lillestrøm, Norway, as part of Nor-Shipping 2019, a maritime event attracting key industry players.

Impairment Losses Drive ZIM into the Red
Israel-based liner company Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) plunged into red during 2018 due to impairment losses.
The company s net loss reached USD 119.9 million at the end of the year, including an impairment loss of USD 38 million with respect to vessels classified as held-for-sale, compared to net profit of USD 11.4 million in 2017.
For the fourth quarter of the year, ZIM s net loss was at USD 46 million due to the impairment loss, compared to net loss of USD 9.7 million recorded in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Total revenues in 2018 were USD 3.24 billion, the highest in the last 4 years, reflecting an increase of 9.1% compared to USD 2,97 billion in 2017. Quarterly revenues were also at a record USD 852.6 million, rising by 12.1% from USD 760.9 million seen in the previous year period.
Yearly and quarterly volumes were at 2,914 thousand TEUs and 714 thousand TEUs, respectively, growing by 10.8% and 4.2% for the periods.
Confronted with tough business environment, ZIM continued to record improvements and to introduce new services to its customers.
"During 2018, we have commenced the first phase of our strategic operational cooperation with the 2M Alliance, recently expanded to two additional trades. The agreement enables ZIM to offer better product and service portfolio to our customers, and cope with the volatile freight rates and fuel prices. We were able to achieve improved cost efficiencies while significantly increasing the transported volumes," Eli Glickman, ZIM President & CEO, said.

Montreal s Viau Container Terminal Set to Expand
Montreal s Viau Terminal will undergo a new construction phase to increase its handling capacity to 600,000 TEUs, the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) and LOGISTEC Corporation said.
This is its second phase, which continues and completes the most recent container terminal at the Port of Montreal. Its first phase was completed in 2016.
2018 was for the Port of Montreal a fifth consecutive record year, with steady growth in its various fields of activity and a 9% upswing in the container sector with 1.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled.
This is why the management teams of the MPA and LOGISTEC - through the terminal operator, Termont Montreal - decided to launch the last phase of Viau Terminal.
This new phase will make it possible to add 250,000 TEUs to Viau Terminal s current capacity, bringing it to 600,000 TEUs.
The project will enable the Port of Montreal to accommodate the anticipated growth in the container sector and reach its maximum capacity on the Island of Montreal, 2.1 million TEUs.
The project works will run from September 2019 to December 2020 and will mainly include installing piles, railway works, dynamic soil compaction, underground infrastructure works, laying foundation, and paving.
Viau Terminal s final phase is made possible through large investments from three partners - the MPA, LOGISTEC and the federal government.
LOGISTEC Corporation announced that Termont Montreal is investing CAD 30 million (USD 22.5 million) in the final phase of this key infrastructure project that, in turn, will enable the development and growth of services for the world s second-largest shipping line, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
"The increase in terminal capacity is coming at the right time for us. We applaud this announcement as it ensures the future growth of our services in Montreal," Sokat Shaikh, President and CEO of MSC Canada, commented.
"MSC has grown significantly by more than 10% a year for the past five years. This additional capacity at Viau Terminal will support such growth over the next two years. Then we will have to move on to the next step," Shaikh added.
"The Port of Montreal is a hub and anchors our network. As MSC s strategic partners, we are delighted to work with the Port of Montreal and support its expansion. This project reaffirms our commitment to Montreal and our determination to be efficient and reliable as a strategic gateway for Canadian trade," Madeleine Paquin, President of Termont Montreal, said.
As informed, the works to complete Viau Terminal will end all possible development of container handling spaces on the Island of Montreal. Consequently, the MPA is getting set for the longer-term future of Montreal s container market dynamics.
The next key milestone in the MPA s strategic development plan is the major container terminal project at Contrecoeur, where certain major steps are currently being implemented or finalized. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023–2024.
"With the completion of Viau Terminal and the major terminal project at Contrecoeur well underway, the Port of Montreal is actively working to accommodate the growth of the container market for years to come," Sylvie Vachon, President and CEO of the NPA, noted.

VARO, GoodFuels to Scale Biofuel Availability in Rotterdam
Reinplus Fiwado Bunker, a subsidiary of VARO Energy, has agreed with Netherlands-based GoodFuels to extended their partnership with the aim of improving availability of bio fuel oil (BFO) to deep sea vessels leaving from Rotterdam.
The new deep sea proposition, which will help to improve the sustainability of the segment, is based on extending the availability of GoodFuels bio fuel oil, which the company launched in autumn 2018.
The new partnership will see VARO help scale the sourcing, production, blending and distribution of GoodFuels BFO across the Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp (ARA) region. GoodFuels would continue to focus on the sourcing of sustainable feedstocks for the BFO, and the sale, marketing and product development of new sustainable fuel solutions.
BFO is a direct drop-in replacement for heavy fuel oil, containing no sulphur and 90% less carbon when compared to traditional fossil-based fuels such as heavy fuel oil. Biofuels are suitable for every type of vessel, without requiring any modifications to engine room equipment.
The move extends the steps taken by VARO and GoodFuels last year to form a partnership focused on scaling sustainable marine biofuels for the European inland shipping market.
"Due to upcoming IMO spec changes and stricter emission requirements, the demand for alternative shipping fuels is increasing. We are proud to now also provide sustainable biofuels to deep sea clients, alongside our inland shipping customers," Ben van Kol, Managing Director of REINPLUS FIWADO Bunker, said.

Triple collision of US/German container ships in Yokohama
Triple collision between container ships reportedly occurred at Yokohama Anchorage off Nonmoku Terminal, at around 2330 Tokyo time Mar 21. Local sources didn t identify ships, including their types, and mentioned only their flags. Antigua-flagged ship, according to local sources, struck anchored USA-flagged ship, and later, Liberia-flagged ship, also anchored.
According to AIS tracks, three container ships were involved. Antigua-flagged MARCLIFF has just left Yokohama Nonmoku, bound for Nagoya, and collided with USA-flagged APL GUAM, which was either approaching port or dropping anchor, it s unclear. After separating from APL GUAM, MARCLIFF collided with, or contacted, anchored HANSA STEINBURG.
All three ships, as of 1500 UTC Mar 22, were at anchor on Yokohama anchorage, no information on damages, except that "there was no spill", so planet is safe.

Cruise ship CARNIVAL TRIUMPH fire, all on board evacuated
Fire erupted on Deck 4 of a cruise ship CARNIVAL TRIUMPH, which is undergoing refurbishment at shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, in the afternoon Mar 21. Hundreds of workers on board were evacuated. Reportedly fire wasn t major one, it started during wielding works on cabins extending. Understood fire was quickly extinguished, no injures mentioned. Extent of damages unreported, probably small. CARNIVAL TRIUMPH is at shipyard since Mar 12, scheduled for a major refit.

UK container ship disabled in rough weather in Aegean sea
Container ship OCEAN PROMISE suffered mechanical failure in Kafireas Strait separating Andros and Evia islands, Greece, Aegean sea, in the afternoon Mar 21, while en route from Algeciras Spain to Aliaga Turkey, ETA Mar 22. The ship was reported drifting, in adverse weather conditions, with 20-24 m/s wind. At night same day crew managed to restart engine, according to AIS, but voyage was interrupted, and the ship headed for Piraeus, at a reduced speed. She was anchored on Piraeus outer anchorage at around 0500 UTC Mar 22.

Britain s Peel Ports expands amid Brexit trade uncertainty
Privately owned Peel Ports is expanding its workforce mostly in Liverpool and plans acquisitions this year, its chief executive said, as Britain prepares its ports to ease any trade disruption caused by Brexit.
The British operator has been upgrading much of its network of seven ports, especially in northwest England, aiming to draw business away from ports further south.

The Port Of Wilmington Orders New Cargo Handling Equipment To Increase Productivity

Competition Body Moves To Crush Dpw Challenge
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has said in a court filing that a DP World challenge to a probe into its alleged anti-competitive practices at India s Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) constitutes an attempt to stop or push back potential adverse findings against the operator.
According to a filing by the watchdog dated from January and seen by news agency Reuters, DP World’s local unit had "prematurely" hurried to court to halt or delay the probe.

Fleet of Konecranes container handling equipment to Port of Wilmington, USA
Konecranes has received an order from Gulftainer USA Wilmington LLC. The order is for nine all-electric Konecranes Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes and three Konecranes Liftace Reach Stackers. Grande America Spill Clean Up Continues as Weather Improves
Favorable weather conditions are facilitating pollution cleaning operations off the coast of France, where the ill-fated Grande America sank a week ago.
A number of vessels from the French Navy and Spanish maritime search and rescue agency are deployed in the clean up operation at the site of the sinking, some 335 km west of the French coast.

GasLog Secures Eight-Year Charter for GasLog Warsaw
Greece-based ship owner and operator GasLog has agreed an eight-year charter for existing uncommitted newbuild vessel, the GasLog Warsaw.
Under the deal with a subsidiary of Spanish electric utility company Endesa, the new ship will start its fixed-term employment in May 2021.

The Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI), an open initiative supporting responsible ship recycling, has welcomed Teekay as its new member.
Teekay, which is one of the world s largest marine energy transportation, storage and production companies, joined A.P. Moeller-Maersk, the China Navigation Company, Wallenius Wilhelmsen and other major maritime players in promoting transparent shipbreaking.
