Spanish trawler grounding, Norway
Trawler AROSA NUEVE ran aground at Hamna, northwest Tromso, Norway, at around 1930 UTC Jun 13, while passing Grotsundet Strait in southern direction. Tug was called, trawler was refloated at around 2130 UTC, and reached Gammelgarden, south of Tromso, under own power. No breaches, no leak were reported. Maersk and MSC plan more 2M services in punctuality drive
Many ports are unable to handle the new generation of 20,000 teu ships efficiently, which is adding to delays across the network that Maersk and MSC are now want to resolve. The two largest containership carriers are looking at slowing ships and modifying vessel rotations in an effort to improve the reliability of their services.
Diego Aponte, the chief executive officer of Mediterranean Shipping Company, said his company has "decided to go for more slow steaming, and will add vessels to current strings that we operate in order to improve punctuality." Statistics released earlier in the year by SeaIntel showed that industry-wide only two-thirds of containerships were arriving on time.
By cutting ship speeds and adding an additional ship to a string, MSC believes it will have more time between port calls and be better able to maintain schedules. MSC will withdraw ships from unprofitable loops and reposition them. Aponte told Lloyd's List that MSC already has started to slow ships on services on north-south routes and that it has approached Maersk Line about making changes on their joint 2M network. A spokesman said that while MSC's key focus is on improving the punctuality and reliability of its services, the changes MSC wants to make will help reduce fuel costs.
Maersk said in a statement Tuesday that it is "constantly looking for ways to improve our network, making it more efficient and customer-oriented. Our recently announced 2M network changes address this issue where different measures were taken to increase service delivery, including the removal of port calls as well as the reduction of speed. We will continue to pursue further improvements, taking into consideration all available tools in the toolbox."

New PSA terminal at JNPT notches May productivity gains
Despite overcapacity and subdued demand, new concessionaire PSA International's Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) appears to have settled into a speedier operating rhythm with marked productivity gains.
BMCT opened full-fledged operations in early February and currently hosts two regular, weekly services - the Swahili Express (SWAX) jointly operated by CMA CGM and Emirates Shipping Line in the India-Africa trade; and the Europe-Pakistan-India Consortium 2 (EPIC2) under a vessel sharing agreement between Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, and Hamburg Sud.
A new analysis of JNPT productivity data shows the new terminal dramatically increased its crane rates and rail volume last month - and the latter improvement is particularly noteworthy, after previous mixed train handling issues with its peers at the port.
BMCT had an average gross crane rate of 41.6 moves per hour during May, compared with 35.6 moves per hour in the prior month, when measured in TEU liftings - achieving the second-best performance in India's busiest public port complex on that front.
Meanwhile, DP World's Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT), which has lately shown strong growth momentum, topped the chart, with an average crane count of 42.83 moves per hour, but that was still lower than 43.71 moves per hour in April. In contrast, otherwise long-time top performer APM Terminals Gateway Terminals India took a slight hit, with that number in May down to 40.9 moves per hour, from 41.16 moves per hour in the prior month, statistics show. Further, BMCT handled 1,060 TEU of railed containers in May, versus just 180 TEU in April, although its total volume stayed relatively flat, month-to-month, at 24,477 TEU.
BMCT was also able to process ships at a speedy pace, averaging no more than a day per call during May. However, a direct, apples-to-apples comparison among terminals regarding vessel turn times is difficult/inappropriate, given the fact that the new terminal had limited ship calls - 10 in May, versus nine in April.
With competition in India's west coast continually increasing, growth remains a major challenge, but ad-hoc calls by some carriers are providing BMCT with a good opportunity to demonstrate its operational prowess. After servicing a rearranged call from the APL Savannah, one of eight vessels deployed in the Europe-Pakistan-India Consortium 1 (EPIC 1) that used NSIGT last month, BMCT is poised to handle another non-regular call from the Hyundai Faith, operating in the China-India Express (CIX) service, on Wednesday.
BMCT's first phase features 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) of quay, a 90-hectare (222 acres) storage yard with 9,336 ground slots, 12 quay cranes, four rail-mounted gantry cranes, 36 rubber-tire gantry cranes, 324 reefer slots, and an annual capacity of 2.4 million TEU. A second-phase installation, featuring facilities with the same annual TEU capacity, is expected to be completed by 2022.
In addition, the new terminal has a distinct competitive edge regarding intermodal train operations, as its on-dock rail infrastructure is strategically aligned with Indian Railways under-construction Dedicated Freight Corridor that connects JNPT with northern hinterland points. Government and industry experts believe the mega-project will go a long way to drawing more truck freight to trains - a transport mode conversion critical to easing landside congestion at the port.
JNPT handles the majority of Indian container cargo. With the BMCT opening, the port has sufficient terminal capacity but needs to upgrade connectivity infrastructure to efficiently handle the anticipated growth and simultaneously fend off aggressive efforts by Adani Group-owned Mundra Port to poach its business.

Monjasa Acquires Bunker Tanker for English Channel Operation
Danish bunker company Monjasa has decided to acquire the 3,600 dwt tanker, MT Fredericia, for "continued bunker operation" in the English Channel.
The 2008-built MT Fredericia has been on time charter by Monjasa for several years and is currently performing bunkering operations in the Portland, Tongue Anchorage and Falmouth areas. The purpose-built double-hull bunker tanker will from its current position continue fuelling vessels entering and exiting the SECA zone, the company said.

Russian bulk carrier to be released soon, Spain
Bulk carrier SEVERNAYA ZEMLYA arrived at Aviles, Spain, on May 23, and soon after was seized in accordance with Court ruling, for owner s outstanding debts. Cargo of coal was offloaded, the ship shifted berth in order not to hamper port operations, and as of Jun 14, SEVERNAYA ZEMLYA was still in Aviles, waiting for release. Local media said, that the ship will be released soon, after money transfer completion. The ship and the crew have all the supplies and don t encounter problems of any kind, it is not abandon, added local sources.

Thai coastal container ship sank, dozens of containers afloat
River/coastal Thai cargo ship PATHARA MARINE 6 capsized and sank at around 2340 LT (UTC +7) Jun 13 off Ko Si Chang island, while en route from Laem Chabang Port to Bangkok, according to official statement cited by Bangkok Post. 4 crew safe. There were some 70 containers on board, an unknown number reported floating around, including Ko Si Chang Anchorage area. During last 2-3 days, the weather in the area is rather rough, with strong southern wind and high swell, which, it is believed, was the cause of an accident. In Oct 2015, sister ship PATHARA MARINE 5 capsized and sank in Gulf of Siam under similar circumstances being caught in rough weather, with 4 crew and 70 containers on board. Experts seek improved transport infrastructure for cargo movement in Lekki seaport
Industry experts have called on Federal Government to ensure perfect operations of deep seaports in the country, especially the $1.5 billion Lekki Deep Seaport in Lagos, expected to kick off in the next two years.
According to them, a functional inter-modal transport system that ensures effective movement of cargo from the port using road, rail and inland waterways, would help to eliminate the problems associated with Apapa and Tin-Can Island ports from repeating itself in Lekki.

Shipbuilding a growth industry for Alberni Valley
Canadian Maritime Engineering in Port Alberni is building for the future. Shipbuilding and marine industry was recognized as one of the main six sectors of the economy in which Port Alberni is situated for growth, in a recent report known as the Sector Diversification by Data Design (SD3). This is a pilot project, run by the provincial government and the city of Port Alberni, that analyzes employment numbers and income by industry.
"We use different models to determine where the biggest opportunities lie," said economic development manager Pat Deakin. "Marine industry is definitely a sector that will stay within the top five or six clusters that we end up being focused on."

Shipping Industry Worried over Italy s Migrants Policy
European shipowners have raised concerns after Italy recently refused a humanitarian ship to disembark rescued persons in Italian ports, according to ECSA.

Gas Supplier Selected for New LNG Facility at Gothenburg Port
Swedegas, which is currently constructing a permanent LNG facility at the Port of Gothenburg, has entered into an agreement with gas supplier Barents NaturGass for the facility. This means that in just a few months, vessels will be able for the first time to bunker LNG at the permanent facility at the port.
"Gothenburg based shipping companies have been amongst the first to adopt LNG in Sweden. Several vessels have already been built and launched which are ready to run on LNG. We are keen to start our LNG supply services and meet the customer s needs," Gudrun Rollefsen, CEO of Barents NaturGass, commented.

DFDS Orders RoRo in China
Danish shipping and logistics company DFDS has ordered one additional RoRo from the Chinese Jinling Shipyard. The newbuilding is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2020.
"This freight new building increases our order book to five large freight ferries, which will increase our efficiency and enable us to accommodate projected growth in our route network in northern Europe and the Mediterranean," Niels Smedegaard, CEO of DFDS, commented.
