Canadian Ship Owners Ballast Water Initiative Shortlisted for International Award
The Canadian Shipowners Association's CSA Ballast Water Research and Technology Evaluation Fund has been nominated as a finalist for the Ship Efficiency Awards 2015 in the category of Initiative of the Year. The second annual Ship Efficiency Awards, hosted by Lloyd's Register and organized by Fathom, will recognize and celebrate the organizations and individuals within the maritime sector that excel in efficient operations, implement fresh thinking, and offer proven efficiency benefits and technological innovation.
"It is a great privilege for the members of the Association to receive this recognition amongst so many outstanding initiatives globally" noted the President of CSA, Robert Lewis-Manning. "Domestic shipping in Canada faces unique challenges to meet existing and impending ballast water discharge regulations due to the unique technical and operational constraints of our ships and the diverse environmental conditions in which we sail. Our project initiative is an essential aspect of focusing resources and promoting innovation."
The winners of the Ship Efficiency Awards will be announced during the London International Shipping Week, September 7-11.
The Canadian Shipowners Association represents Canadian domestic vessels operating on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River, the Canadian East Coast, and the Canadian Arctic. Over half of the commodities traded are between Canada and the United States. The annual economic benefit of domestic short sea shipping is approximately $35 billion.

Latvian Shipping Company announces scholarship contest for seafaring students
To promote education and development of the seafaring sector in Latvia, JSC Latvian Shipping Company (LSC) in cooperation with the Vītols Fund announces application for the company's newly established scholarship for the future seafarers. Scholarship can be applied for by students of Latvian higher educational institutions with good and excellent study results who have undergone marine internship on a ship which is under technical management of the LSC subsidiary LSC Shipmanagement Ltd. The total scholarship fund of Latvian Shipping Company is 18'000 euro.
"Currently 20 modern tankers are under our supervision. Internationally our ship crew is evaluated as professional and experienced. For that reason it is important for us that already prepared and experienced new professionals enter the labour market. Up to now we have been actively involved in the studying process, by providing internship for the seafarers-to-be. However, to achieve growth of the most talented students and that after the graduation from the university the best students choose to work in our company, this year JSC Latvian Shipping Company has started long-term cooperation with the Maritime Academy of Latvia and next year will expand the range of higher educational institutions, by offering scholarship for last year students," says Robert Kirkup, the Chairman of the Management Board of JSC Latvian Shipping Company, emphasising that it is essential for young people to develop a full understanding of the work on ships already during studies.
To participate in the scholarship contest of JSC Latvian Shipping Company, applicants have to submit a filled-in scholarship candidate evaluation form, academic records with calculated average grade, curriculum vitae and a cover letter in English language. The evaluation form is available on the company’s website section LSC Scholarship.
Pro-rector of the Maritime Academy of Latvia Andrejs Zvaigzne emphasizes that he highly evaluates cooperation with JSC Latvian Shipping Company to date and believes that the scholarship initiative to give extra support for the best seafaring students will motivate them to achieve higher study results. "Support of companies in the sector shows the students that after graduation they have workplaces here in Latvia where they can use their knowledge obtained during studies, thereby strengthening our country and its wellbeing and national economy."
In the next academic year JSC Latvian Shipping Company will grant a special company scholarship, which can be applied for by students acquiring ship navigator's, mechanic's or electric engineer’s accredited academic program, with obtained marine experience of at least 4 months. It is planned that each year the JSC Latvian Shipping Company's scholarship will be granted to four students. It will be paid a monthly payment of 300 euro for a period up to fifteen months.Further information about the scholarship and criteria of the scholarship contest is available on the company’s website http://www.lk.lv/lv/karjera/as-latvijas-kugnieciba-stipendija

China set to build floating oil terminal for Bangladesh
Bangladesh is set to sign a contract with a Chinese company next month to establish the country's first floating terminal in the Bay of Bengal to unload imported fuel oil, officials said yesterday.
Energy division officials said a state-owned Chinese company is to obtain the work order from the Bangladesh government to install the floating terminal - single point mooring (SPM) - in the sea near Maheshkhali Island.
The energy division requested the planning commission (PC) last week to approve the project worth 55.06bn taka
State minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid wrote a letter to planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal to approve the project urgently, said a senior energy division official.
"The Chinese PM is to visit Bangladesh sometime in September. During his visit, an agreement for building of the SPM is likely to be signed. So we need approval of the project before his visit to Dhaka," the official told newsmen.
China would bankroll the SPM project, to be utilised to unload crude and refined fuel oil from vessels in the Bay of Bengal, he said.
The floating oil handling terminal installation projects had suffered a blow previously due to a funding crisis as the government failed to mobilise external resources.
Earlier, state-backed Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) under the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) in May 2010 undertook the SPM terminal installation project at $129mn cost to check pilferage and make handling of imported petroleum more efficient.

Plans to expand the Corpus Christi ship channel
The Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce hosted the "State of the Port" today, announcing one major project.
"The great news is that the port is very healthy," said Port of Corpus Christi Chair Judy Hawley. "We're healthy financially; we're healthy in terms of tonnage."
Although the state of our port is great, city and state leaders are working toward a major project, the widening and deepening of our ship channel.
"Some of the tankers that come in now, they're so heavily loaded, that they have to ‘lighter,’" said Hawley. "Take off part of their product, before they can come into the channel."
Hawley says this expansion is important, because those ships are only getting larger.
Right now, our ship channel is 45 feet deep.
The project would expand it to 52 feet and widen it to 530 feet.
By doing this, our channel would be able to accommodate most of the world's shipping fleet.
"It's critical," Hawley said. "Not only for Texas, but also for economy of the United States."
The project will cost around $300,000,000.
The state already has half the funding needed for this expansion, now all they need is for the federal government to match it.
"We're about 99% done with design and engineering," said Hawley. "We just need the funding."
No matter what, Hawley has faith that the expansion will become a reality.
However, there's no timeline laid out for the project yet.
