Sailor Ardenne Allen Woodward honoured by HUNTINGTON BEACH
A sailor Ardenne Allen Woodward, alias Bill, was killed at the Pearl Harbor. He was seaman from Huntington Beach.

He was newly married and his wife was expecting, he used to send heart touching letters to his beloved wife. But unfortunately, he could not make it to see his baby as he died during the war. His daughter, Karen Richardson, is now 74 years old.

“My mother used to tell me that my actual father lost his life during a war in Pearl Harbor.” commented Ms Karen Richardson

Ardenne Allen Woodward was in the USS Arizona ship, that sunk which at Pearl Harbor.

Jerry Person, who is historian saw an old issue of Life magazine, in which it mentioned around 2,400 Americans were killed, but this sailors name was not mentioned in the Huntington Beach War Memorial.

As a matter of this, city leaders such as Huntington Beach Councilman Dave Sullivan, made his decision to honor Woodward and make the people aware about his sacrifice.

Annoucment were made on Monday about Woodward's name as one of Huntington Beach's own. Another ceremony will be taking place on June 9 where his engraved name will be revealed at the memorial.

Ongoing Investigations to ascertain the cause of US Navy sailor Ryan Burris’s death
On Thursday, after the death of a US navy sailor Ryan Burris in Abu Dhabi, investigations are in process to evaluate the cause of death.
According to the US department of defence, “ the information related to the death of the navy sailor have not been shared, but he died due to injuries and the the investigation is still going on.
“There is no way that any kind of foul act was attached to the death, the final report of the investigations will be shared once it is completed.” as told by Maj Tiffany Bowens from department of defence.
The navy sailor used to work on the naval special warfare grid in electronics and communications support.He was given a role on temporary basis to the crisis response element of the joint special operations task force in the Arabian Peninsula to support Operation Inherent Resolve, the campaign to eliminate the terrorist group ISIL in the region.
He belonged to Chicago suburb of Lisle and it was his first overseas deployment. On Tuesday, during the Memorial Day at his native place, he was deeply remembered.

Biannual Naval Commanders’ Conference 2015 to be held at New Delhi
The biannual Naval Commanders’ Conference is expected to take place in New Delhi commencing from May 25 to May 28. On this event, the Chief of the Naval Staff will oversee vital operational and administrative situations occurring in the Navy
The conference would be discussing the success of operations which took place at various nations, such as the Op Neer in Maldives on December 14, 2014, in Jan/Feb 2015 the Theatre Readiness Operational Level Exercise (TROPEX) happened, in Mar/Apr 2015 Op Rahat in Yemen and also the joint operation with the Coast Guard to catch hold of drug mafia near the Indian coast during April 15.
Thus highlighting on these commendable operations during the event, it will build a platform to discuss about the great opportunities with regards to operational importance, identifying of capable loops and reviewing future plans.
It will also focus on conditions related to operations, infrastructure and manpower, covering operational readiness of the commands and coastal security. And how to make Indian Navy’s cyber circle more secure would be another critical topic to discuss at the event.

Gangavaram port to expand it’s capacity upto 60 million
Gangavaram Port is planning to expand it’s capacity on by investing Rs.1300-crore to increase its capacity to 60 million tonne.

As per the Gangavaram Port Limited spokesperson who told The Hindu, “The port constructed nearby Gajuwaka city under Public Private Participation mode would be finishing the mechanisation work in a span of one or two months time.

The expansion is expected to help take benefit of the growing demand of imported coal by numerous power plants and discovering tapping project and other cargoes.

The spokesperson mentioned that they were expecting powerful growth in the demand of raw material, thus it will help in the development of industries in the nation.

In the year 2014 till 2105, Gangavaram port, it commenced it’s operations with just five berths, handled 20.74 million tonnes as compared to previous year which was 15.81 million tonnes.

Gangavaram port’s expansion includes construction of new berths and infrastructure that comprises of stockyards, railway tracks, pollution control measure and other facilities.

One additional completely mechanised coal terminal which has the capacity to manage a Cape size vessel up to 200,000 DWT, three multipurpose berths which has the capacity of managing Panamax size vessels and state-of-the-art mechanised bulk material handling systems will be a part of the expansion plan.

It will also involve additional rail sidings, ancillary civil works and mechanised stock yards.

Seafarers UK raises funds for Veteran Seafarers Welfare
At Seafarers UK Annual Meeting at Mansion House in London on Seafarers UK, announced that it would be going financial aid of £1.17m to build a major new extension to the Trinity House Hub retirement home for ex-seafarers at Mariners’ Park in Wallasey, Merseyside.

Seafarer UK is a leading maritime charitable trust. HRH The Earl of Wessex, President of Seafarers UK made the grand announcement, where more than 150 charity’s supporters and beneficiaries witnessed the annual meeting.

There will be 22 single and double occupancy apartments for retired and elderly Merchant Navy and Royal Navy seafarers, and their dependants in the new Seafarers UK Centenary Wing. It expected to open by the late Spring of 2017.

The additional apartments will meet a real need for high quality housing and with a 24 hour care staff team on site will be able to support ‘a balanced community’ of those with low, medium and high needs.
 
At the event, Commodore Barry Bryant, Director General of Seafarers UK commented, ‘Seafarers UK has a vision to support people who require help need belonging to the maritime industry, especially the UK’s older, retired and veteran seafarers, as well as their dependants.”

Paragon Shipping employs Mr. Lambros Theodorou as a New Non-Executive Director
Paragon Shipping Inc. made an announcement of appointing Mr. Lambros Theodorou as the Board of Directors. He would be working as an independent, non-executive director, which be functional from May 18, 2015. Also, Mr. Theodorou will be appointed to the Company’s Audit, Compensation and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees, functional from May 18, 2015.

He has a vast experience in the banking industry which is 35 years. He was at executive positions at several banks in Athens. Mr. Theodorou was at a position of Deputy General Manager and was heading the Shipping Unit of EFG Eurobank S.A. from 1994 to 2013. Before these designations, Mr. Theodorou was at a position of Vice-President and Piraeus Shipping Manager of the Shipping Department of The Chase Manhattan Bank N.A.

Paragon Shipping is a global shipping company, includes in the laws of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It has executive offices in Athens, Greece, which specialises in the transportation of drybulk cargoes.

It’s current fleet includes sixteen drybulk vessels with a total carrying capacity of 980,399 dwt. Also, Paragon Shipping’s current newbuilding program comprises of two Ultramax drybulk carriers and three Kamsarmax drybulk carriers that are expected to be delivered in 2015.

Engraved name of USS Frank E. Evans DD754 ship and its crew
At the Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens cemetery, there is a new memorial stone
built in the memory of USS Frank E. Evans DD754 ship and its crews. The stone was
engraved with the words “USS Frank E. Evans DD754:

In June 1969, the USS Frank E. Evans destroyer collided with an Australian carrier and as a result one Clovis sailor died.

At the time when the ship was cut in half and submerged after the collision in the South China Sea, Seaman Apprentice Joe Luis Gonzalez, who was 19 years old died.

On the occasion of Memorial Day, U.S. Navy Veteran and survivor Joe Bob Mann unveiled the memorial stone supplied by the USS Frank E. Evans DD754 Association, and expressed his feeling that he deeply thinks about his lost brothers who lost their lives onboard.

At the ceremony, U.S. Air Force veteran Jessica Baker participated was also present along with the Disabled American Veterans organisation, and her son also came along, where he volunteered with the Boy Scouts in putting up more than 2,000 flags on veteran’s graves.

Tribute were paid by the speakers for the commendable sacrifices done by the sailors/crews during the battle.

Navy Officer denied by the hotel staff to enter the lounge. The hotel apologies to the sailor
A Standard hotel in Manhattan refused the sailor to enter the pub. Post the incident the hotel has issued an apology to the sailor.
The Navy officer was not allowed by the bouncer, who was wearing her white uniform during Fleet Week.
As per Daily News, “At around at 8 pm on Saturday, the sailor was stopped near the lift to the Top of The Standard lounge, she was along with three people, they were in cocktail dress.”
According to a sailor who refused to reveal his name said, “that he was in a decent dress of a $400 blazer and matching shoes.All of us were decently dressed, except for one person and that was the Navy officer.”

European Maritime Day 2015 at the port Piraeus
To mark the celebration of European Maritime Day 2015 at the port Piraeus, Maritime industry representatives would visit the port and would be witnessing the grand event commencing from May 28 to 31.The host for the prestigious event would be the Municipality of Piraeus, which has created a very influential show.

The commencement of the celebration will include a two day conference at the Athens Concert Hall on Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29.

Maritime sector is a target for cyber criminals
As the merchant vessels are getting bigger in size so the number of technology used onboard. As a result, seafarers rely on the technology data rather than making use of their own talent, awareness and senses.

The size of the crew is reducing due to the use of cyber technology which helps in navigation, and are also used for instant unloading, handling, and tracking of goods at ports. But systems get attacked by cyber criminals.

Victims often try to keep successful hacks a secret. The reason for this is that the maritime companies value their reputation more than the money they actually lose. Also, cyber criminals are stealthy and in many cases companies are unaware they have been hacked.

World’s 90% of freight is delivered by sea. Ship owners can face an unpleasant situation where they might have to spend millions of dollars for each hack, and even can shake or break the economic condition of the country.

Cyber criminals can knock down the operation of regional as well as national supply chains by breaking into key container terminals.

For example, the British government reported that the attack by cyber criminals amounted upto 400 million pounds ($672 million) for a year, as faced by UK oil and gas industry.
