Nigerian seafarers bemoan disdain for local certificates
Notwithstanding the massive investment in seafarers development by the Federal Government, the Nigerian crew is still facing severe discrimination due to preference for foreign certificates.
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), had invested heavily in its National Seafarers Development Programme, (NSDP) scheme, but has been experiencing a delay in taking the cadets for sea time training. T&T : 18 Norwegian cruise ship staff return.
T&T nationals working as crew on various Norwegian Cruise Line ships returned home Wednesday and are serving out their quarantine at the University of the West Indies (UWI) campus in Debe.
According to a source who was one of the 18 returning nationals, they were pooled together from their various vessels and brought into T&T waters aboard the Oceana Marina. Only one returning national was already stationed as crew aboard the vessel.Posted On:18-Jun-2020

CMV Crew Member Dies Awaiting Repatriation to India.
A Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) crew member on the Vasco da Gama cruise ship in the U.K. died early this morning, according to several crew members who wish to remain anonyous.
The crew member was identified as Krishna Kumar Balaji who was employed by CMV as a "1st cook galley." He reportedly died in the ship s infirmary around 3:00 a.m. today. CMV recently transferred Mr. Balaji to the Vasco da Gama because the MV Astoria, which is one of several cruise ships CMV operates, is scheduled to sail to Portugal to go into dry dock. Crew with heavy steam burns medevaced from Finnish Aframax tanker.
A Croatian crew member of an Aframax tanker ALFA FINLANDIA was medevaced by Salvamento Maritimo helicopter, Spain, on Jun 17. He suffered steam burns with some 20% of body affected, understood injury was related to his job. He was transferred to hospital. Tanker is cruising in Med some 100 nm off Tarragona, Spain, since Jun 2, after leaving Tarragona. 80,000 crew are still stranded on cruise ships.
Guardian US reporter Erin McCormick tells Rachel Humphreys why up to 80,000 crew are still stranded on cruise ships amid the coronavirus crisis. While most cruise ship passengers have now made it back to land, many crew workers are trapped, quarantined in tiny cabins, some without pay. Crew members have said the experience has taken its toll on their mental health. Cruise companies have blamed strict rules from health authorities for not letting crew disembark.
