MSI: Rapid Decarbonisation to Lead to Radical Transition
Carbon Carriers: MSI studies the implications of radical decarbonisation for the shipping industry
Consultancy highlights that those in the industry who believe commitments to cut carbon emissions will be achieved need to prepare for radical transition
Rapid decarbonisation of global energy supplies will have radical implications for the global shipping industry, according to a new report from Maritime Strategies International (MSI).
If the Paris Agreement goals are met, the fossil fuel cargo base that shipping serves would undergo an aggressive and prolonged transformation. MSI s report examined the consequences of a major shift in energy consumption away from hydrocarbons and towards renewables and biofuels for shipping markets.
"Whilst some sectors of the shipping industry, such as containerships, would be virtually unscathed, those for which hydrocarbons comprise a significant proportion of - or all - the cargo mix would undergo decades of falling demand," Stuart Nicoll, MSI Director, said.
"The results, detailed in the report, would be multi-decade declines in fleet capacity, earnings and asset prices across the affected sectors. Ship owners would be forced to slash new ordering and scrap uneconomic vessels."
MSI said that the analysis projects two demand frameworks - Reduction and Reference - designed to provide broad narrative and structure to long-term global energy demand.
Global energy consumption in the Reduction scenario is largely based on projections made for pathways consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, as described in the IPCC SR1.5 report.
The Reference scenario is designed to provide a comparison to Reduction. Although it describes a more limited change in the global energy consumption profile, Reference still incorporates substantial restraints on future energy consumption.
The more extreme Reduction scenario is the focus of the report, under which fossil fuel demand sees radical decline over the next three decades. By 2050 world coal consumption falls by 80%, oil consumption halves, and gas demand drops by about a quarter.
"The energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables means that investors in shipping and ports are exposed to substantial financial risks, which have not been adequately assessed before," co-author Tim Smith, Director, Oil and Tanker Markets at MSI, added.
"Those in the industry who believe that that global commitments to cut carbon emissions will be achieved need to prepare for radical transition that this implies. Vessel selection will be critical, and divestment from sectors with the greatest exposure to fossil fuels may prove the only way to profitably navigate the changing landscape."

NASSCO Lays Keel for Matson s 2nd New ConRo Ship
California-based shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has celebrated the keel laying of Matsonia, Matson s second Kanaloa-class combination container, roll-on/roll-off (ConRo) vessel.
The keel laying ceremony for the Hull 602 took place in San Diego on July 17, 2019, only a few weeks after launching Matsonia s sister ship, Lurline.
Construction of the 3,500 TEU Matsonia began with a first cut of steel in April 2018 and the ship is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2020.
The two Kanaloa-class vessels are being built for Honolulu-based Matson at a total cost of approximately USD 500 million for the pair. Both ships will transport containers, automobiles and rolling stock between the West Coast of the United States and Hawaii. With a deadweight of 47,000 tons, they will feature a length of 265 meters and a width of 34.9 meters.
Both new vessels will have an enclosed garage with room for approximately 500 vehicles plus ample space for rolling stock and breakbulk cargo. They will also feature green technology, including fuel-efficient hull design, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks, freshwater ballast systems and the Tier 3 dual-fuel engines.

Swiss-Norwegian Duo Eases Hybrid System Installations
Integrated energy systems designer Blueday Technology has teamed up with Swiss sustainable energy infrastructure fund manager SUSI Partners to offer installation of hybrid power systems without upfront capital expenditure.
Under the new arrangement, asset owners and operators are offered to install hybrid energy systems with no upfront costs; instead they will pay a monthly fee.
Up to EUR 50 million (USD 56.1 million) is available globally for financing, the parties said.
The technology offered allows vessel owners to reduce fuel use by up to 27 percent and achieve a 95 percent cut in emissions, according to Blue Water Energy, the owner of Blueday Technology.
As explained, Blueday s SMART hybrid solution optimises the overall operational performance of ships by allowing engines to operate closer to their ideal design point, with load fluctuations absorbed through the batteries.
"The offshore and marine industries are facing financial pressures at a time when their emissions and carbon footprints are coming under scrutiny," Hans-Petter Heggebo, CEO of Blueday Technology, said.
"We know that cash pressure is one of the main barriers to installing our systems and future-proofing assets - we ve now solved that problem for owners and operators through our agreement with SUSI Partners."
The arrangement is offered to asset owners and operators in the oil and gas, drilling rig, maritime, aquaculture and shore power sectors.

ShipChain, GTX Corp Partner Up on NFC Blockchain Shipment Tracking Solution
Blockchain-based solution provider ShipChain and GTX Corp, a tech firm offering GPS and NFC tracking location-based services, have announced a partnership for a new global NFC blockchain shipment tracking solution.
Under the agreement, ShipChain will use GTX s temperature enabled NFC smart tags to track temperature-sensitive shipments.
As explained, the tag requires no scanners, or wires, and records temperatures based on customer-defined intervals and durations. In addition, GTX offers other NFC products that ShipChain will utilize to optimize its Track and Trace Platform.
"ShipChain s new partnership with GTX is another step toward reaching our goal: a transparent, unified, end-to-end logistics platform," John Monarch, ShipChain CEO, commented.
"While developing our … NFC products…, we realized we needed to incorporate blockchain security in order to be an influencer in the shipment tracking and monitoring business. By collaborating and integrating our technologies with ShipChain, we will enhance our speed to market while providing a much needed comprehensive solution for the industry," Patrick Bertagna, GTX Corp CEO, said.
The NFC tags provide real-time temperature sensing and data logging across the supply chain necessary with transportation of perishables; food, drinks, pharmaceuticals and other temperature sensitive products that can be negatively affected by conditions in transit. These built-in security measures can prevent the distribution of contaminated supplies in the marketplace and unauthorized modification of data logs, allowing brands, retailers, distributors, and freight forwarders to verify shipment quality.
The encrypted data collected from the tags will be uploaded to the ShipChain blockchain backend providing authentication and chain of custody. This new service will enable temperature-sensitive shipments to be efficiently monitored while in transit, with the potential to manage a range of new government regulatory requirements for perishable shipments.
Integration between ShipChain and GTX has already begun and a joint client will be announced once all details have been finalized, according to the duo. Additionally, ShipChain will begin offering GTX enabled services to all customers as part of the expanding partnership.

APM Terminals Callao Rolls Out Peru s 1st Digital Customer Platform
APM Terminals Callao has become the first Peruvian terminal to introduce a customer platform that logs, streamlines and coordinates general cargo operations in the Port of Callao.
During the pilot phase, MOST, which was developed together with maritime and customs agents, enabled users to complete transactions 67% faster and operations 12% faster.
APM Terminals Callao invested nearly USD 1 million in the implementation of the new platform that can be used by maritime agents, customs agencies and carriers, among others.
As explained, MOST is used to register cargo and view real-time information, make online payments and generate authorizations for the loading and unloading of all types of general cargo.
Customs agents can associate and assign a load to the transport companies with which they work. This reduces face-to-face procedures and improves security. In addition, it enables users to more accurately plan equipment and personnel. The terminal can also allocate yard and quay resources more effectively per shift. What is more, the platform streamlines and simplifies the billing process, which is carried out automatically using information logged in the system.
MOST provides a graphical interface for monitoring operative movements in the port, warehouses and onboard vessels. It provides the status of the cargo in terms of quantities, weights, detailed location and dispatch. Furthermore, its vessel schedule shows real-time vessel berthing and departure times.
APM Terminals Callao, Peru s largest multipurpose terminal, handles around 40% of the country s total container traffic and more than 70% of Peru s non-containerized general cargo.

Two Chinese ports halt customs clearances for coal imports: sources
Chinese customs is no longer permitting coal cargoes to enter the country at the ports of Jingtang and Caofeidian, said three coal traders, who were told by customs officials of the halt on Tuesday.
Customs officials at the port of Jingtang, one of China s biggest coking coal import points, and the neighboring port of Caofeidian said they would halt customs declaration services from July 16 until further notice, the traders said on Wednesday.

The Cochin Port Joint Trade Union Forum, an umbrella organisation of trade unions with different political affiliations, has planned a long-drawn-out campaign, including a token strike at the end of October, to press for reviving the fortunes of the Cochin Port.
The trade union demands include appointment of more workers to meet the day-to-day activities at the port.

Diana Shipping Finds Work for Panamax Bulker
Greek dry bulk vessel owner Diana Shipping has entered into a time charter contract with Hong Kong-based Ausca Shipping Limited for one of its Panamax dry bulk vessels, the Selina.
The gross charter rate for the 75,700 dwt bulker is USD 11,750 per day for a period of minimum seven to maximum nine months. The charter commenced on July 15, 2019.

Epic Gas Adds Two Petredec Ships to Its Fleet
Singapore-based gas carrier owner and operator Epic Gas has completed the acquisition of two of four ships it is buying from Petredec Ltd.
The vessels in question are the 11,000 cbm LPG carriers Kahyasi and Kris Kin, built by a Japanese shipbuilder in 2015.

Australia s Wharfies Reveal Further Strikes at DP World Terminals
Wharfies at DP World s container terminals in Australia have decided to escalate their industrial action campaign, according to the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA).
As part of their move to protect jobs from outsourcing and automation, more than 600 Sydney workers will walk off the job for 48 hours from the morning hours of July 18, while 350 Brisbane wharfies will commence a series of one hour strikes at the start of every shift.
