India: Ship recycling to create 1.5 lakh more jobs in 3 yrs India aims to attract ships from Europe and Japan for scrapping, mainly in Alang, one of the biggest ship breaking yards of the world. Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that by bringing in more vessels the aim is to double the recycling which is presently 4.5 million light displacement tonnage (LDT) by 2024. Male seafarers as victims of sexual harassment Male seafarers can be the subject of sexual harassment while working on board the vessel entitling them to moral damages. Sexual harassment can happen to anyone and everyone.
The Supreme Court stressed in the case of Richard Toliongco vs. Anglo Eastern Crew Mgt. (G.R. No. 231748, July 8, 2020) that sexual harassment must be recognized as a risk faced by our seafarers and which should not be merely seen as a gender issue, rather it is a power issue.Posted On:2-Feb-2021

Iconic laker fire, Sturgeon Bay, Great Lakes Self-discharging bulk carrier ROGER BLOUGH caught fire on Feb 1 in Wisconsin shipyard, Sturgeon Bay, Lake Michigan, USA, where the ship was docked for a winter lay-up. Firefighting teams responded, understood fire was extinguished, but extent of damages remains unknown. Mega container ship mass containers loss, North Pacific UPDATE confirmed MSC Many containers reported lost on Jan 26 in North Pacific SE of Tokyo, by container ship MSC ARIES, which crossed the position where containers were seen, and after that, turned north, understood to avoid further losses. The ship is en route from Los Angeles to China Ningbo, ETA Jan 30.

12,400 TEU MSC container ship disabled in Dardanelles, turned back New-Panamax container ship MSC MARIA SAVERIA suffered mechanical failure while entering Dardanelles from Aegean sea in the morning Jan 31, being en route from Saudi Arabia to Turkeys Marmara sea port. Dardanelles Traffic Control Center deployed two tugs to take ship under control. Jamaica: Crew change hubs could address seafarer crisis, says MAJ A global network of crew change hubs would help alleviate the humanitarian crisis seafarers face at present, according to the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ).

Philippines ends temporary ban on international crew change According to shipping agency GAC new guidelines have been issued for crew change from 1 February with reference to the Resolutions Nos.96 & 97 of the Philippines Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging and Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID). China noncommittal about when ship with 16 Indian crew will be permitted to unload cargo The fate of 16 Indian sailors of a cargo ship stranded outside a Chinese port for six months remain uncertain as China on Monday remained noncommittal about when their ordeal would end.

Woman Medevaced from Matson Ship Off Washington The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a woman from a U.S.-flagged Matson ship after she was having difficulty breathing and temporarily lost consciousness off Washington s coast on Saturday.
