Iran Shipping Subsidiaries are Under the Process of Sanctions
The subsidiaries of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) are under the process of sanctions, as told by Mohammad Hossein Dajmar, Managing Director - IRISL.

Iran’s ISNA news agency quoted Dajmar saying, “As of now, our trade deals are East Asian countries like China, Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia,”

Under the authority of sanctions, IRISL ships are not permitted to sail towards European countries, Australia, and Canada.

As soon as the sanctions are cleared, foreign trade will rise remarkably, earlier Germany was a leading trading partner with IRISL, but currently China and India are the leading trading partners.

No new sanctions have been levied on IRISL in the month of April, despite the current sanctions against IRISL, the volume of shipments has increased.

Majority of the RISL ships have changed their destination from Europe to East Asia, especially China and India, over recent years, he noted.

In the month of January, EU’s second highest court annulled sanctions on 40 shipping companies and an Iranian bank, which had been stuck by asset freezes as a part of pressure on Tehran. The General Court struck down the sanctions, saying the EU had not given valid reasons for saying that IRISL was supporting nuclear proliferation.

As per the EU’s Official Journal on April 8, European Union has reinstated sanctions on an Iranian bank and 32 shipping companies, a couple of days after an agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program was reached.

3rd Maritime Trends Conference by Marine Tours and the University of Piraeus

BMT announced plans of launching its Unique Fleet Management System at Nor-Shipping

Angelakos Hellas SA takes delivery of ECO bulk carrier newly built vessel “Sinica Graeca” of Sinopacific Shipbuilding
SINOPACIFIC Shipbuilding Group (SINOPACIFIC) held a christening ceremony at its Dayang Shipyard for a newly built Ultramax CROWN63R on May 14th, 2015.

Greece invites binding bids for Piraeus port sale
For countries biggest port - Piraeus, Greece has asked three firms to submit binding bids by the month September to for a majority stake, as told by a senior privatization official to Reuters.

Previous year Greece had shortlisted China’s Cosco Group and four other groups for a 67 percent stake in Piraeus Port, but the sale was halted post Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s leftist government came into power this year.

The sale is expected to have one of the major concessions offered by Tsipras to EU and IMF lenders during ongoing talks to secure aid.

On Wednesday Athens approached with an amended invitation to bid for 51 percent rather than the previous 67 percent stake to investors, the official said.

Out of the five initial bidders only three are still interested in the port, which are – Cosco, Dutch container terminal operator APM Terminals, and Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services –, the official said.

“The initial stake would be for 51 percent with an option to reach 67 percent in five years if they invest 300 million euros,” he said. “We would be announcing the winner at the end of September or by early October.”

Cruise ship collides with another vessel on Kanmon passage during MOL Tabletop Drill
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced yesterday, in collaboration with the Japan’s 7th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, the company conducted a tabletop drill based on a scenario in which the cruise ship Nippon Maru, operated by its group company, Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line, Ltd. (MOPAS; President: Motomu Kobayashi), collided with another containership while under way on the Kanmon passage. The drill was held on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, where the incident has caused injuries to few on board and flooding of the Nippon Maru’s engine room.

With the aim of strengthening MOL’s emergency response structure, which is based on the MOL Group Corporate Principles – safeguarding the environment by maintaining rigorous, safe operation and navigation standards. The exercise was also structured to ensure the mandatory response and smooth, precise communications that are so essential in the event of such a serious incident involving a MOPAS-operated vessel.

Participating in the drill along with the 7th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, MOPAS were the executives from the MOL Head Office including President Muto and officials from relevant divisions, which teamed up to organize an Emergency Control Headquarters.

During the drill scenario, the Nippon Maru collided with an ocean-going containership while under way on the route of Kanmon passage to the Port of Kobe after departing from the Port of Hakata. Few of the crew members and passengers were injured in the collision, that caused flooding in the engine room.

Unmanned technology a is futuristic strong feature at upcoming maritime defence show
SINGAPORE: The International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (IMDEX) Asia is all ready to showcase a magnificent technology.
Over 180 companies from 28 countries are expected to take part in IMDEX Asia this year. Organisers said one area that has seen growing interest is in unmanned technology - both in the skies and underwater.
"Unmanned vehicles means less stress on human resources," said Mr Leck. "Human resources is something that's getting very limited across the world. So I my view is that we can use technology as a supplement to do certain tasks, it is becoming a real emerging trend, or what you call a disruptive technology.
The three-day event will be taking place on May 19-21 and will be witnessed by more than 60 VIP delegations from over 40 countries, including navy and air force chiefs, as well as coast guard directors. From previous year there are also displays at the current event which are 20 warships from 12 different countries, including Australia, China and the United States. That is up from 15 warships from nine countries at the previous show. Three strategic and technical conferences will also be organised at IMDEX Asia.

Seafarer Welfare Organisations Approach EU Governments to Migrants At Sea
Three leading international seafarers’ welfare organisations - the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA), the International Maritime Health Association (IMHA), and the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), has approached EU governments to acknowledge the vital role of seafarers in the rescue of migrants at sea by sending They have a formal letter to all heads of governments requesting that more resources are mobilised for search and rescue in the Mediterranean region on an urgent basis.

Previous seventeen months over a number of 5,000 migrants have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Fortunately, merchant seafarers are the life-savers. In the year 2014, seafarers aboard 800 merchant ships rescued 40,000 migrants. Their role in the large scale rescue of migrants should be recognised and honoured.

Despite that, EU governments are still depending on the kindness of seafarers and the legal obligations upon them to tackle with a human tragedy of an unprecedented scale in lieu of committing adequate resources to save migrants’ lives. Merchant ships and crews are not well equipped or properly trained to handle with large scale rescues.

Seafarers are often risking their own safety and security in these large scale rescues. They face unavoidable situations such as recovering bodies and dealing with sick or injured men, women, and children that may have an adverse effect on them and for which they may need counselling or other forms of support. They are no substitute for professionally trained search and rescue personnel. Hence, they must not be used by EU governments as means of ignoring a difficult issue on the doorstep of Europe.

Sixth Annual Seminar by YoungShip Cyprus
The annual seminar by YoungShip Cyprus, the local chapter of YoungShip International network of young professionals in the maritime industry, held at Venue Centre of the Columbia Plaza in Limassolits last week. The event took place for the sixth consecutive year focused on ‘Ports Privatisation – New Opportunities’.

At the occassion, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Marios Demetriades was the main speaker, where he shared his views extensively about the controversial issue of ports privatisation and answered to the audience queries, he mentioned again repeating that within the dialogue underway at the mixed advisory council, all rights of the workers at the ports would be secured.

Honorable minister said that giving the port-side services to private investors ‘is a one way street’ for the expansion of the ports as well as sea transport sector, and eventually it will have a remarkable input on the economic development.

More than a decade ago, rival destinations like Malta undertook similar actions, with a favourable impact on their economy, Demetriades said.

The process is identical to the examples that took place at the airports of Larnaca and Paphos, as well as that of the port of Larnaca, the Minister concluded.

West African VLCC freight rates abruptly increase on slim vessel availability
Post rise in fixing activity due to severe constraint in vessel availability in the region, the cost of sending 260,000 mt crude oil cargoes has abruptly increased from West Africa to the Far East.

The WAF-Far East route was evaluated Worldscale 7.5 higher at w67.5 Tuesday, the highest level since an identical evaluation January 27.

On the fixture front, various sources have commented that CPC had placed the Athenian Freedom on subjects at w67.5 for a WAF-Taiwan voyage with a May 14-15 laycan.

As per the sources, Time Charter Equivalent [TCE] earnings for an owner on a voyage at such rates could be as much as $65,000 per day.

A string of WAF VLCC fixtures last week has left tonnage lists in the region extremely tight, with sources estimating as many as 14 VLCCs fixed during that period.

The tonnage list is currently tight for any loadings till mid June.“The market is w67.5 [for WAF-Far East] now, or possibly even a little higher depending on loading dates,” as told by a shipbroker.

Besides, high levels of fixing in West Africa, the region has been left short of potential ballasters after several ships got fixed in other regions.

On Monday alone, Petrobras was heard to have booked three VLCCs for Brazil-China voyages in the first decade of June.
