DMCA announces formation of Maritime Advisory Council
Dubai Maritime City Authority is coming up with a new initiative by establishing Maritime Advisory Council with the aim to establish an integrated structure to boost the local maritime sector's competitiveness and position Dubai as a vital player on the international maritime map. It also contributes DMCA 's attempt to ensure the success of the Maritime Sector Strategy (MSS).
The duties of the Maritime Advisory Council will focus on promoting collaboration, consultation, coordination and support among stakeholders and keep a tab on rapid regional as well as international changes. It will also do research and discuss commercial situations and discover solutions to instil confidence of regional as well as international investors in the local marine environment and to strengthen Dubai's position as a world-class maritime hub.
Maritime Advisory Council includes well-known dignitaries from the maritime sector and senior executives from prominent marine companies and other operating in the sector. The members on board are DP World, Dry docks World, Emirates Classification Society 'TASNEEF,' DIFC Courts, Clarksons, Tufton Oceanic, Gulf Energy Maritime (GEM), United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), Maersk Line, Emarat Maritime, Fichte and Co, Partner Ince and Co, Global Marketing Systems (GMS), and Dubai Trading Agency (DTA).

RINA launches development programme on Effective Presentation & Networking for engineers
Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) announced a development programme on soft skills courses structured to meet the needs of engineers titled as Effective Presentations and Networking, the sessions which will be held on July 29th 2015 at RINA headquarters in London. This one day course familiarises engineers from all disciplines to the fundamentals of how to effectively communicate in business, with a specific focus on customer and teammate involvement via upgraded presentation and networking skills.
The course was developed following a survey of RINA members asking them if the training would be beneficial to them and their teams and what learning results they would be expecting. It has been structured by survey feedback and a sister concern named pilot run at RINA headquarters.
Trevor Blakely, Chief Executive - RINA, commented: “Soft skills training, tailor made to the needs of engineers, is a domain which does not receive much attention it deserves and our job is devoted to bring changes by a logical familiarisation of a developmental course.”
The Effective Presentations and Networking course is designed for engineers at all levels who want to improve their soft skills and garner positive impact of their business presentations and networking.

After six years U.N. finalizes Polar Shipping Code
U.N. agency - The International Maritime Organization charged with establishing global shipping standards has adopted the environmental principles of the Polar Code, a compulsory precautionary measures regulations meant for Arctic and Antarctic shipping.
The environmental area of the Polar Code will adapt to significant principles, which persists of banning on the operational discharge of oil and chemicals and further improve the quality standards related to the disposal of sewage and garbage into polar seas. Besides, safeguarding marine mammals already established in the safety portion of the Code, it will also deliver added conservation protection. These schemes will be initial precisely applicable to species, measures that accurately go beyond whales and it will also include sea lions, seals and walrus.
Unfortunately, the IMO excluded several critical issues from the environmental portion of the Code. Specifically, heavy fuel oil usage by vessels in the Arctic is not banned (which was applicable on Antarctic in the year 2010), despite strong policy and environmental arguments raised by Friends of the Earth and allied NGOs. For instance, banishing heavy fuel oil usage in the area would have the dual advantage of minimising oil spill damage risk as well as black carbon emissions.

S.Korea’s Iran crude imports tumble
South Korea’s imports of Iranian crude tumble by 6.5 percent in the month of April from a year ago, in the initial four months of 2015 the oil shipments from the OPEC country decreased as close as 14 percent year-on-year to match the standards of international sanction requirements.
Well, South Korea and other Asian buyers are permitted to import crude form the Islamic nation at sanctions-reduced rates nearly at the end of 2013, whereas, the United States and five other countries are experiencing a deadline of June 30, to finalise deal with Iran to restrict its nuclear programme.
Last month, Seoul imported 516,918 tonnes of crude oil from Tehran, or 126,300 barrels per day (bpd), as compared to 552,884 tonnes, or 135,088 bpd, a year ago, initial customs data by the world’s fifth-largest crude oil importer was displayed on Friday.
As compared to 2.2 million tonnes, or 135,982 bpd last year, South Korea imported 1.9 million tonnes/117,161 bpd, of crude from the Middle Eastern country in the period between January and April in the current year.
In the year 2014 South Korean crude shipments from Iran were 6.2 million tonnes or 124,497 bpd, which was slashed to 7.1 percent as seen in the year 2013 average of 134,000 bpd, the reports are as per the data gathered and Reuters calculations in the month of January.
