PSA, Partners Wrap Up DCT Gdansk Acquisition
Singapore s terminal operator PSA International, the Polish Development Fund (PFR) and the IFM Global Infrastructure Fund (GIF) have completed the acquisition of DCT Gdansk, the largest container terminal in Poland.
The transaction was closed on May 21, 2019, after the parties obtained formal approval by the relevant authorities.
As World Maritime News earlier reported, the shares in DCT Gdansk have been purchased from Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) managed fund Global Infrastructure Fund II, MTAA Super, AustralianSuper and Statewide Super.
DCT Gdansk is one of the fastest growing container ports in Europe and the only terminal in the Baltic that can serve ultra large container vessels (ULCVs) with a capacity of up to 23,000 TEUs.
Container volumes handled by the terminal have grown steadily over the years to reach 1.9 million TEUs in 2018.
The terminal has a quay length of 1,306 meters and a maximum depth of 17 meters. DCT Gdansk is already undergoing expansion, which will be completed in the course of 2019 and 2020.
"The consortium partners have the intention to further strengthen the terminal’s position and to look into additional expansion needs as and when relevant," a joint statement reads.

Wartsila Lands Service Deals for Four Japanese LNG Carriers
Technology group Wartsila has secured long-term service agreements for four LNG carriers owned by two Japanese joint ventures.
Booked by Wartsila in March 2019, the orders are for two carriers owned by the MOL and JERA JV, and for two carriers owned by a joint-venture between Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and JERA.
The solutions cover a range of services, including scheduled maintenance parts for the equipment covered, all workshop services, all field servicing for piston related maintenance, turbocharger maintenance, condition-based maintenance (CBM) reporting, remote operational support (ROS) from Wartsila s expertise centers, and dynamic maintenance planning. All four vessels are powered by Wartsila 50DF dual-fuel engines.
"These agreements have been customized to address our customers’ long term needs and business objectives," Jorgen Naaijer, General Manager, Marine Agreement Sales, Wartsila Marine, commented.
"They bring measurable and guaranteed lifecycle cost benefits to the owners in terms of reliability, operational efficiency, and accurate maintenance planning based on the true condition of the equipment, which minimizes the risk of unexpected downtime."

K Line Cuts Executives Pay by 10 Pct
Japan s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has decided to reduce the pay of its executives from April 2019 as the shipping company is working towards improving its financial strength.
As informed, K Line s executive remuneration will be reduced by 10% over a period of six months as compared to 2018 fiscal year.
The reduction comes in order for K Line to clarify its management stance towards the recovery of the company s business performance during 2019 fiscal year, the company said.
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, K Line suffered a loss of JPY 111.2 billion (around USD 1 billion), compared to a profit of JPY 10.4 billion seen in the previous fiscal year. The net result was negatively impacted mainly by losses in the company s containership business it jointly owns with MOL and NYK.
"K Line and our group companies will continue to strive as one to improve profit and loss under the new management, being strongly determined to make every possible effort to again return to the black in 2019," the company said in a statement.

CLdN Scraps Deal for Second RoRo Newbuilding at Uljanik
Luxembourg-based shortsea specialist CLdN RoRo has cancelled a contract with Croatian shipbuilder Uljanik for the construction of one vessel.
The contract covering one 5,500 lane meter ship (hull no. 532) was terminated on May 21, 2019, according to a filing issued on the Zagreb Stock Exchange.
As explained, the deal was canceled due to the launch of bankruptcy proceedings at Uljanik on May 17 and therefore the shipyard s inability to deliver the newbuilding in line with the conditions reached in the agreement between the parties.
The vessel was a part of the shipbuilding contract signed by CLdN RoRo and Uljanik in March 2016 for two identical RoRo ships, which were originally scheduled for delivery in 2018.
The first roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship from the batch (hull no. 531) was canceled by CLdN RoRo in January 2019.

New Transatlantic Services Put Hamburg Port Back on Growth Track
Germany s largest universal port, the Port of Hamburg, ended the first quarter of this year with a 6.4% increase in container volumes.
The port s total container throughput rose to 2.31 million TEUs in Q1 2019 from 2.17 TEUs recorded in Q1 2018.
As explained, the increase is primarily attributable to four liner services new to Hamburg and linking the city with ports in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
A total 121,000 TEU for container transport with the USA represented an almost fourfold jump, moving the USA to the second place among Hamburg s top trading partners on container traffic. Twelve liner services now link the Port of Hamburg directly with 29 ports in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
"The four new Transatlantic services run by THE Alliance plus renewed growth in bulk cargo handling are putting the port on a growth path. Hamburg has now become the hub for services with the USA, Mexico and Canada," Axel Mattern, Joint CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing, commented.
Total seaborne cargo throughput increased by 6% to 34.6 million tons in Q1 2019 from 32.7 million tons in Q1 2018.
During the first three months of this year, both general cargo throughput at 23.9 million tons and bulk cargo throughput at 10.7 million tons were up by 5.4% and 7.5% respectively.
At around 14.1 million tons, German foreign trade with the USA in the general cargo segment now constitutes the second strongest market after China which stands at around 21 million tons, according to the port.
"Including bulk as well as general cargoes, in seaborne cargo handling the Port of Hamburg has so far annually loaded and discharged a total of around 5.5 million tons," Mattern added.
During the quarter, feeder traffic and landside seaport-hinterland services - at 1.45 million TEU up by 8.0 percent on the comparable figure in the previous year - also profited from the new container lines. Of the total of 2.3 million TEU handled, 865,000 TEU - up 3.8 percent - were transported by feeders to other European ports.
Both Port of Hamburg Marketing s Joint CEOs welcomed the start now made on fairway adjustment and assume that this project so vital for the seaward accessibility of the port will be implemented as rapidly as possible.
"For shipping companies, the fairway adjustment not only simplifies calls in Hamburg, but also facilitates larger handling volumes. Greater draft and an easier situation for passing on the Elbe will allow greater use of their ships transport capacity," Ingo Egloff, Axel Mattern s Executive Board colleague at Port of Hamburg Marketing, explained.
Once the Elbe is deepened, large containerships and bulk carriers will be able to transport around 18,000 tons more cargo when arriving or sailing in Hamburg.
The port and its handling terminals are already today clearing mega-carriers with a slot capacity of more than 21,000 TEU. They are also preparing for the safe arrival and departure of even larger vessels.

Greek Shipping Companies Accused of Faking Pollution Records
Greek ship owner Evridiki Navigation, manager Liquimar Tankers Management Services, and chief engineer Nikolaos Vastardis have been indicted for failing to keep accurate pollution control records, falsifying records, and obstruction of justice, the US Department of Justice (US DOJ) said.
As informed, the charges related to the falsification of records and other acts designed to conceal from the US Coast Guard (USCG) inspectors impermissible overboard discharges of oily bilge water from the Liberian-flagged oil tanker, M/T Evridiki.
According to the indictment, on or about March 11, 2019, Vastardis failed to maintain an accurate oil record book which fully recorded both the discharge overboard of bilge water that had accumulated in machinery spaces and any failure of the ship s oil filtering equipment.
In addition, when the ship s pollution control equipment was inspected by the USCG, Vastardis made false statements concerning how the equipment was operated at sea and demonstrated how the equipment was operated at sea in a manner designed to trick the equipment into reporting the discharge of oily bilge water at permissible levels, the US DOJ said.
The two companies and Vastardis are all charged with failing to maintain an accurate oil record book as required by the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, a US law which implements the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, commonly known as MARPOL.
The parties are also charged with falsification of records, obstruction of justice, and making false statements.
The 167,300 dwt Suezmax tanker Evridiki was built by Korean Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in 2007, according to data provided by VesselsValue. It is part of the Blue Fin Tankers Pool.

Port of Hamburg - strong first-quarter growth powers upswing

Egypt launches trade shipping line from Ain Sokhna to East Africa
Egypt launched a new trade maritime navigation route connecting Ain Sokhna of Suez Governorate to East African countries, said Egypt s Ministry of Public Business Sector in a statement.
Operating the navigation route will start in October, the ministry said, adding that it will serve six countries along the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, in addition to landlocked countries in Africa.

Novatek Brings In TechnipFMC for Arctic LNG 2 Project
Russian gas company Novatek has signed a contract with UK-based TechnipFMC for the engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning of an integrated liquefied natural gas facility under the Arctic LNG 2 project.
The facility is to have an annual liquefaction capacity of 19.8 million tons, according to Novatek.
