ABS, Samsung Heavy Sign JDP for Digital Tech Incorporation
Classification society ABS and South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have signed a joint development project (JDP) which will see the two sides use digital technologies to streamline the designing, building, and classing of assets.
The JDP encompasses 3D digital disclosure, data exchange, and the use of analytics to support the new construction process and pilot the survey of the future.
"We have been leading digital innovation from design to production in order to adapt to the fourth industrial revolution and to ensure continued competitiveness," Jong H Youn, Vice President of SHI, said, adding that the JDP could be an opportunity for the company to advance innovative certification and inspection.
The three focus areas of the JDP include the piloting 3D model based plan review, development of a utility to import data from the SHI CAD system into ABS engineering software, and the use of artificial intelligence to supplement traditional non destructive testing in the shipbuilding process.
It’s the second JDP with SHI that ABS has announced during Gastech. The first is a project to develop a next generation LNG carrier design with advanced air lubrication and smart capabilities.

Saudi Arabia s International Maritime Industries Inks VLCC Order With Bahri, HHI
Saudi Arabia s International Maritime Industries (IMI) has signed a vessel purchase agreement (VPA) with the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) and a subsequent sub-contract agreement with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to build one very large rude carrier (VLCC).
As informed, the 319,000 dwt tanker is to be constructed at HHI s Ulsan shipyard and delivered in October 2021.
Other agreements related to licensing, technical services and training were also signed with HHI to ensure capability building and knowledge transfer.
Established in late 2017 and headquartered in Ras Al-Khair, IMI is a joint venture between Bahri, Lamprell, Saudi Aramco and HHI. When fully operational in 2022, this nearly 12-million-square-meter integrated maritime yard will be one of the largest full-service maritime facilities.
The project award is said to further strengthen the business relationship between IMI and its shareholders, as well as contribute to the development of a localized maritime industry supply chain infrastructure, technical expertise for Saudi nationals, and a track record in shipbuilding.
"This sub-contract award provides many benefits for IMI, including transfer of knowledge from HHI to IMI, a mechanism to grant use of Intellectual Property (IP) to IMI, development plans for IMI employees to acquire new skills in shipbuilding and planning, as well as technical assistance," Fathi K. Al-Saleem, IMI Chief Executive Officer, explained.
"This project award will also contribute to the long-term growth of this new industry in Saudi Arabia and will enable IMI to independently build VLCCs in Saudi Arabia to the highest international shipbuilding standards," he pointed out.
Commenting on the award, Abdullah Aldubaikhi, CEO of Bahri, said: "Bahri is committed to playing a pivotal role in transforming the Kingdom into an important regional and global logistics and transportation hub…This project award … signifies a major development in this direction; we are confident it will provide a boost to our ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing our offerings and bolstering our capabilities."
Located in The King Salman Complex for International Maritime Industries & Services, IMI will have an annual capacity of four newbuild offshore rigs and over 43 newbuild vessels including VLCCs, in addition to servicing more than 260 maritime products.
The first phase of production operations is expected to commence toward the end of 2020 with the facility reaching its full production capacity by 2022.

ABS, HHI Group Partner Up on Digitalization and Decarbonization to Advance Ship Designs
ABS, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Global Service (HGS) have agreed on a framework for the exchange of digitalization and decarbonization (D&D) concepts to apply to present and future ship designs.
As explained, this new framework will be an industry first D&D ecosystem between class, shipyard and ship service company.
Launched at a ceremony during Gastech 2019 in Texas, the new framework enables HHI, HGS and ABS to support alternative means of compliance with new remote survey capabilities using the newly commissioned ABS Remote Decision Support Center, supported by HHI and HGS technology and services. It also enables identification of new technologies, designs, fuels, and simulation techniques for mutual clients.
According to ABS, the ultimate goal is to establish a lifecycle partnership from the design of the vessel to the steel cutting and to post-delivery of assets.
"We will examine the myriad of possible technologies to be able to bring forward the most technically mature, economically viable, and compliant concepts to ship owners," Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman, President and CEO, commented.
As part of the framework, the three companies outline the need for the development of new cyber security standards. Communications companies which specialize in data transmission, which include HGS s satellite connections, will pursue a proprietary data infrastructure standard aligned to support data exchange, integration, and analysis for classification and non-class purposes.
Specifically, the new framework will be applied to ABS classed vessels being designed and constructed by HHI and sold with HGS lifecycle services.
Based on these new D&D concepts, HHI, HGS and ABS will work together to advance the state of vessel design, with possibilities ranging from alternative fuels to options for all-electric vessels.

MOL Wraps Up LNG Bunkering Trial in Port of Kobe
Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has undertaken an LNG bunkering trial on the LNG-fueled tugboat Ishin at the Port of Kobe.
Organized by the Kobe City Port and Harbor Authority, the operation marked the first LNG bunkering in the Port of Kobe and confirmed that LNG fuel can be supplied safely at the port.
LNG fuel for the trial was hauled by a tanker truck from the Himeji LNG Plant, Hyogo Prefecture.
The LNG-fueled tugboat Ishin, owned by MOL and operated by Nihon-Tug-Boat, was supplied via a truck-to-ship system at the port s Shinko pier.
The milestone was made ahead of the upcoming IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap, to be implemented in January 2020. In response to the new standards, an increasing number of LNG-fueled vessels are coming into service, making the development of LNG bunkering ports in Japan an urgent task.
The tugboat, delivered in February 2019, is the first such LNG-fueled vessel in western Japan. The unit will escort large-size freighters during port calling in/out operations, while MOL collects know-how on LNG-fueled vessels through its operation.

DSME Gets AiP for World s Largest Ethane/Ethylene Carrier Design
South Korea s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering has received an Approval in Principle (AIP) from classification society ABS for its 165,000 cbm jumbo ethane/ethylene carrier design.
Under this design, the IMO Type B cargo tanks would be constructed out of high manganese austenitic steel (Hi-MN steel), which DSME said is more cost competitive than Ni alloy steel as well as providing increased reliability and a more robust containment.
"Based on DSME s advanced technology, which is performing strongly in the LNGC market, it will be able to lead the global gas market not only in membrane but also in Type B tanks by developing this new design for ultra-large ethane/ethylene carriers, applying high-manganese steel, a newly rising cryogenic material," Odin Kwon, Chief Technology Officer of DSME, added.
ABS has reviewed the safety, suitability and feasibility of the Type B cargo tank design based on information supplied by DSME to confirm the system would comply with current ABS rules.
The parties have previously collaborated on joint development projects assessing the viability of Hi-MN steel for cryogenic applications.

Nigerian Ports Filled Up, Running Out Of Space, NPA Cries Out
The Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman has warned that Nigeria s ports are currently running out of space due to increasing numbers of overtime cargoes in the various port terminals.

Construction Starts on Furetank s 7th Vinga Tanker
China s Avic Dingheng shipyard hosted a steel-cutting ceremony for the seventh Vinga-series tanker for Sweden-based shipowner Furetank Rederi AB.
The ship is to be named Fure Vinga, taking the place of its namesake which was sold to Canadian shipping company Desgagnes and renamed Gaia Desgagnes earlier this year.
